1. Evaluation question three
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
Abbie Rodger AS Media
2. Finding an appropriate production company
When trying to find a production company that
would be suitable to distribute my piece I had a
few things to look for and take in to consideration.
Firstly, I needed to find a production company that
has previously distributed psychological horrors
with a similar feel to mine. By this I mean avoiding
psychological horrors such as ‘The Human
Centipede’ as this horror is quite clearly a different
concept and piece to mine. The film I could find
most relation to mine was ‘The Black Swan’, this
was for different reasons; the main character(s)
being young and female in a college environment
is the same as mine, which I feel attracts a similar
target audience to mine, the uncertainty that the
film brings through the fact the audience can’t tell
whether it is hallucinations or real life which is a
very similar idea that is portrayed in my piece.
3. ‘The Black Swan’ was produced by Fox Searchlight Pictures, which I decided maybe
was not appropriate for my film due to the fact, this is such a large and well known
company that produces films of all types, of all genres, for all different ages – and a
lot of them - whereas I feel my film gives a sense of an independent company that
may focus on a more focused audience or genre. Also, it is an American
company, and my film definitely gives off a very British impression, down to the
clothes, the setting, and even the character looks quite typically British. The way I
filmed and edited it was inspired by quite gritty and grungy style of British TV and
films such as ‘Skins’ and the character was dressed in a style that wouldn’t generally
represent a young American female, in which stereotypically I imagine more would
dress in the style of a character out of ‘Mean girls’ or ‘Wild Child’. My character on
the other hand I chose a costume that represent her differently, she is actually
wearing clothes that are mine, a very British fashion at the moment. For this reason I
haven’t chosen to use this company.
4. I researched some independent British film companies and films they had produced as
I feel they were more suited and I found three that had produced films with a certain
aspects that were similar to that of mine. The production company ‘Hammer’ had
distributed films such as ‘The Woman in Black’, ‘Wake wood’ and ‘The Resident’, all
British horror films (bar the Resident which is British/American) with British
characters. Straightaway this smaller and lesser-known company seems more
appropriate for my film as it follows along the same genre as well as its more typically
British feel – especially with it being the distributor of ‘The Woman in Black’ with the
main character being a very famous face of British film for all over the world - Daniel
Radcliffe).
5. I briefly looked at the film company of DJ films,
this was mainly because of the fact they were
the distributor for the film ‘Kidulthood’ which
has a similar British gritty feel to mine and its
characters are all in their late teenage years or
are young adults – the films target audience –
and its characters feel relatable in the way I feel
mine does to its target audience. I think the
reason I wouldn’t choose this company is the
fact it lacks the horror aspect and other films
that have been distributed by them feel too far
away from mine (The Iron Lady,
Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll).
6. The film production company ‘Between The Eyes’ has distributed
the films ‘Shifty’ and ‘Welcome to the Punch’ – very British
thriller films which is a lot more a long the lines of my film. The
film ‘Shifty’ being described as being an Urban thriller – which
has the idea of young characters such as mine – and ‘Welcome
to the Punch’ being a criminal themed thriller; both quite
different genres of my film, however I think the characters in this
represent the same rough British feel as mine in terms of the
clothing, setting and concept. The genre of thriller is also closer
to horror but again it is mainly the characters and feel of the film
that relates to mine, taking more in to consideration the idea of
target audiences rather than the genre.
7. In my opinion, ‘Hammer’ films would be the most suited to
distribute my film as it ties the horror aspect with the British
portrayal though I don’t particularly feel it has the similar target
audiences as mine. This being said, the likelihood a film company
would only produce films for one target audience, for one
particular genre that conveys one certain atmosphere through its
filming and editing is very low, and each of its other films differ
in ways as well, so this is the most suited to my piece.
