The document summarizes the Pregel system, which was designed for large-scale graph processing. Pregel addresses the inefficiency of MapReduce for graph problems by allowing direct message passing between vertices during synchronized iterations. It provides fault tolerance through checkpointing and a master-worker architecture. Key contributions of Pregel include its distributed programming model and APIs for message passing, combining messages to reduce overhead, global communication through aggregators, and mutating graph topology. The paper notes strengths like fault tolerance but also weaknesses such as putting responsibility on the user and lack of master failure detection.

High Performance Parallel Computing with Clouds and Cloud Technologiesjaliyae
Infrastructure services (Infrastructure-as-a-service), provided by cloud vendors, allow any user to provision a large number of compute instances fairly easily. Whether leased from public clouds or allocated from private clouds, utilizing these virtual resources to perform data/compute intensive analyses requires employing different parallel runtimes to implement such applications. Among many parallelizable problems, most “pleasingly parallel” applications can be performed using MapReduce technologies such as Hadoop, CGL-MapReduce, and Dryad, in a fairly easy manner. However, many scientific applications, which have complex communication patterns, still require low latency communication mechanisms and rich set of communication constructs offered by runtimes such as MPI. In this paper, we first discuss large scale data analysis using different MapReduce implementations and then, we present a performance analysis of high performance parallel applications on virtualized resources.

CONFIGURABLE TASK MAPPING FOR MULTIPLE OBJECTIVES IN MACRO-PROGRAMMING OF WIR...ijassn
Macro-programming is the new generation advanced method of using Wireless Sensor Network (WSNs), where application developers can extract data from sensor nodes through a high level abstraction of the system. Instead of developing the entire application, task graph representation of the WSN model presents simplified approach of data collection. However, mapping of tasks onto sensor nodes highlights several problems in energy consumption and routing delay. In this paper, we present an efficient hybrid approach of task mapping for WSN – Hybrid Genetic Algorithm, considering multiple objectives of optimization – energy consumption, routing delay and soft real time requirement. We also present a method to configure the algorithm as per user's need by changing the heuristics used for optimization. The trade-off analysis between energy consumption and delivery delay was performed and simulation results are presented. The algorithm is applicable during macro-programming enabling developers to choose a better mapping according to their application requirements.

LARGE-SCALE DATA PROCESSING USING MAPREDUCE IN CLOUD COMPUTING ENVIRONMENTijwscjournal
The computer industry is being challenged to develop methods and techniques for affordable data processing on large datasets at optimum response times. The technical challenges in dealing with the increasing demand to handle vast quantities of data is daunting and on the rise. One of the recent processing models with a more efficient and intuitive solution to rapidly process large amount of data in parallel is called MapReduce. It is a framework defining a template approach of programming to perform large-scale data computation on clusters of machines in a cloud computing environment. MapReduce provides automatic parallelization and distribution of computation based on several processors. It hides the complexity of writing parallel and distributed programming code. This paper provides a comprehensive systematic review and analysis of large-scale dataset processing and dataset handling challenges and
requirements in a cloud computing environment by using the MapReduce framework and its open-source implementation Hadoop. We defined requirements for MapReduce systems to perform large-scale data processing. We also proposed the MapReduce framework and one implementation of this framework on Amazon Web Services. At the end of the paper, we presented an experimentation of running MapReduce
system in a cloud environment. This paper outlines one of the best techniques to process large datasets is MapReduce; it also can help developers to do parallel and distributed computation in a cloud environment.
Performance evaluation of larger matrices over cluster of four nodes using mpieSAT Journals
Abstract Parallel computing operates on the principle that large problems can often be divided into smaller ones, which are then solved concurrently to save time (wall clock time) by taking advantage of non-local resources and overcoming memory constraints. The main aim is to form a cluster based parallel computing architecture for MPI based applications which demonstrates the performance gain and losses achieved through parallel processing using MPI. This can be realized by implementing the parallel applications like solving matrix multiplication problem, using MPI. The architecture for demonstrating MPI based parallel applications works on the Master-Slave computing paradigm. We aim to evaluate the time statistics of parallel execution and do comparison with the time taken to solve the same problem in serial execution. We also demonstrate communication overhead involved in parallel computation. The results with runs on different number of nodes are compared to evaluate the efficiency of MPI based parallel applications. We also show the performance dependency of parallel and serial computation, on RAM. Finally we show the relationship between the number of slave processes to be specified for computation and the number of cores available for parallel computation. Keywords: Parallel Execution, Cluster Computing, Symmetric Multi-Processor (SMP), MPI (Message Passing Interface), RAM (Random Access Memory).
Fault-Tolerance Aware Multi Objective Scheduling Algorithm for Task Schedulin...csandit
Computational Grid (CG) creates a large heterogeneous and distributed paradigm to manage and execute the applications which are computationally intensive. In grid scheduling tasks are assigned to the proper processors in the grid system to for its execution by considering the execution policy and the optimization objectives. In this paper, makespan and the faulttolerance of the computational nodes of the grid which are the two important parameters for the task execution, are considered and tried to optimize it. As the grid scheduling is considered to be NP-Hard, so a meta-heuristics evolutionary based techniques are often used to find a solution for this. We have proposed a NSGA II for this purpose. The performance estimation ofthe proposed Fault tolerance Aware NSGA II (FTNSGA II) has been done by writing program in Matlab. The simulation results evaluates the performance of the all proposed algorithm and the results of proposed model is compared with existing model Min-Min and Max-Min algorithm which proves effectiveness of the model.
Improving the Performance of Mapping based on Availability- Alert Algorithm U...AM Publications
Performance of Mapping can be improved and it is needed arise in several fields of science and engineering.
They'll be parallelized in master-worker fashion and relevant programming ways have been projected to cut back
applications. In existing system, the performance of application is considered only for homogenous systems due to simplicity.
In this we use Availability-Alert algorithm using Poisson arrival to extend our approach for Heterogeneous systems in Multi
core Architecture systems. Our proposed algorithm also considers the requirement needed for the application for their
execution in Heterogeneous systems in Multi core Architecture systems while maintaining good performance. Performance
prediction errors are minimized by using this approach at the end of the execution. We present simulation results to quantify
the benefits of our approach.
Sharing of cluster resources among multiple Workflow Applicationsijcsit
Many computational solutions can be expressed as workflows. A Cluster of processors is a shared
resource among several users and hence the need for a scheduler which deals with multi-user jobs
presented as workflows. The scheduler must find the number of processors to be allotted for each workflow
and schedule tasks on allotted processors. In this work, a new method to find optimal and maximum
number of processors that can be allotted for a workflow is proposed. Regression analysis is used to find
the best possible way to share available processors, among suitable number of submitted workflows. An
instance of a scheduler is created for each workflow, which schedules tasks on the allotted processors.
Towards this end, a new framework to receive online submission of workflows, to allot processors to each
workflow and schedule tasks, is proposed and experimented using a discrete-event based simulator. This
space-sharing of processors among multiple workflows shows better performance than the other methods
found in literature. Because of space-sharing, an instance of a scheduler must be used for each workflow
within the allotted processors. Since the number of processors for each workflow is known only during
runtime, a static schedule can not be used. Hence a hybrid scheduler which tries to combine the advantages
of static and dynamic scheduler is proposed. Thus the proposed framework is a promising solution to
multiple workflows scheduling on cluster.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Pregel - Paper Review
1. Pregel: A System for Large-Scale Graph
Processing
Paper Review
Maria Stylianou
November 2, 2012
1 Motivation
Nowadays, large-scale graphs, like the Web graph and social networks, are among the
main sources of new computing problems. Processing such graphs efficiently can be a
challenge. MapReduce can be a solution, though very inefficient due to the require-
ment of passing the entire state of the graph from one stage to another. Hence, the
authors propound Pregel, a distributed programming model especially designed to ad-
dress the processing of large-scale graphs, which preserves efficiency, scalability and
fault-tolerance[1].
2 Contributions
So far, there was a gap in the area of frameworks for large-scale graphs processing that
can offer scalability, while being distributed and fault-tolerant. Pregel is exactly designed
with these characteristics. The authors designed Pregel for the Google cluster architec-
ture, in which clusters are interconnected and geographically distributed, and each one
of them containing thousands of commodity machines. Their main contributions in-
clude: 1. Design of a fault-tolerant distributed programming framework for enabling
execution of graph algorithms in parallel over thousands of machines. 2. Provision of
an API with direct message-passing among vertices, combiners for reducing overhead,
aggregators for global communication and monitoring, and lastly topology mutations by
solving conflicting requests.
3 Solution
Pregel operates as a repeated synchronized computation process on vertices. Upon
inserting a graph as an input, the graph is divided into partitions, which include a set
of vertices and their outgoing edges. The vertices are assigned to machines and one of
1
2. them acts as a master for coordinating the worker machines. The workers then undergo
a series of iterations, called supersteps. In every superstep, all vertices in each worker
execute the same user-defined function which can (a) receive messages sent during the
previous superstep, (b) modify the state of the vertex and its outgoing edges (vertices
and edges are kept on the machines) and (c) send messages to be delivered during the
next superstep. At the end of each superstep a global synchronization point occurs.
Vertices can become inactive and the sequence of iterations terminates when all vertices
are inactive and there are no messages in transit. During computation, the master also
sends ping messages to check for workers failures. The network is used only for sending
messages and therefore it significantly reduces the communication overhead, becoming
more efficient.
4 Strong Points
S1 Fault-tolerance is achieved with the use of checkpoints, in which the state of nodes’
partitions is saved to a persistent storage. Upon a machine failure during compu-
tation, the rest of the machines reload their partition state from the most recent
checkpoint.
S2 Combiners are an optimization for less network traffic and can be manually enabled
by the user. With this option, messages can be combined and sent in a single
message, reducing the overhead.
S3 Aggregators are a mechanism for global communication and monitoring. They have
different uses, like: in statistics, for global coordination or even in more advanced
implementations. . . .
5 Weak Points
W1 The user has to modify Pregel a lot in order to personalise it to his/her needs.
More precisely, the user has to code for enabling combiners and for customizing
aggregators. Additionally, the user is responsible for solving conflicting requests.
He/She needs to define handlers, which increases the complexity in the system.
W2 No failure detection is mentioned for the master, making it a single point of failure.
W3 The evaluation presented in the paper is very limited with very little explanation.
There is no clear comparison with other systems. An experimental comparison
with MapReduce would be an interesting approach. Also, there is no experiment
evaluating the fault-tolerance of the system. . . .
