COPD
 It is a severe respiratory condition that is
increasing prevalence world wide
 This disease is characterized by air flow limitation
that is not filly reversible
 The air flow limitation is usually progressive &
associated with abnormal inflammatory response
of the noxious particles and gases.
3 condition comprises COPD
1. Mucus hypersecretion
2. Emphysema
3. Bronchiolitis
cigaratte smoke is the main cause
Chronic cigarette smoke exposure mice
6 week old male mice are selected
ACUTE STUDY
Exposed to smoke of 5
ciggarats for 20 mints
3gp of having 40 mice
are selected
CHRONIC STUDY
Exposed to 5 days with
3cig/day
5gps having 40 mice
 In acute study:
 Each 40 animal gp are sub divided & each
have 10 each
1.No tx/ air exposed
2.No tx/smoke exposed
3.Low dose test /smoke exposed
4.High dose test/smoke exposed
 In chronic study
1.No tx/air exposed
2.Drud tx/air exposed
3.No tx/smoke exposed
4.Low dose drug/smoke exposed
5.High dose drug/smoke exposed
 After 7 mints animal are sacrificed , lung fixed intra
tracheally with formalin soln. at a pressure of 20cm in
water
 Lung vol. measured by water displacement method
 Emphysema: mean linear intersept and internal surface
area
 Vol. of macrophage calculated by point count method
