AI-SDV 2021: Stefan Geissler - AI support for creating and maintaining vocabu...Dr. Haxel Consult
Structured vocabularies, thesauri and lexicons are key ingredients for many information management tasks. Creating them however often requires a significant amount of work. Maintaining and extending them often means that the respective manual tasks need to be done on a regular basis in order to prevent the resources from becoming outdated, irrelevant and incomplete. AI has much support to offer for this task. And by wrapping the respective approaches into applications that can be operated by terminologists and domain experts who don't need to be programmers or data scientists themselves, the benefits can be made available to a wide range of users.
Adopting Data Science and Machine Learning in the financial enterpriseQuantUniversity
Financial firms are taking AI and machine learning seriously to augment traditional investment decision making. Alternative datasets including text analytics, cloud computing, algorithmic trading are game changers for many firms who are adopting technology at a rapid pace. As more and more open-source technologies penetrate enterprises, quants and data scientists have a plethora of choices for building, testing and scaling quantitative models. Even though there are multiple solutions and platforms available to build machine learning solutions, challenges remain in adopting machine learning in the enterprise. In this talk we will illustrate a step-by-step process to enable replicable AI/ML research within the enterprise using QuSandbox.
Case Study: The Value of Partnership During Conversiondclsocialmedia

A good working relationship with a trusted partner can work wonders to make the process easier for the writing team and save time. On the other hand, choosing an inexperienced but seemingly inexpensive vendor can result in costly rework.
Transforming the Application of Cancer Staging with Intelligent ContentRob Hanna, ECMs
Faced with the task of publishing the next edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual, the staff at the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) realized that there had to be a better way to facilitate the updates to the content and distribution to a growing number of critical channels. In 2013, they turned their mind to Intelligent Content and enlisted the help of a team of professional technical communicators and information architects to devise a solution.
Over the past four decades, the AJCC has used traditional medical publishers to produce and distribute print versions of the manual and staging forms used by clinicians worldwide to stage all forms of cancer to determine treatment and predict patient outcomes. Every seven years, world-renowned physicians gather to evaluate the science and produce updates to the cancer staging manual. With the rapid developments in cancer research and increased prevalence of electronic health records, the AJCC realized that their business model had to evolve. They required more agile publishing capabilities than the traditional publishers could offer. They also needed more control over their content to fulfill delivery to a growing number of distribution channels.
Over the past year, the AJCC has transformed their content for the most prevalent forms of cancer using a specially-trained team of writers to improve upon the clarity and consistency of the information. This content sits on top of specialized DITA/XML allowing for sophisticated reuse and repurposing of the content. This session will present the business case for the Cancer Staging Content Transformation (CSCoT) project and discuss the wins and challenges of their Intelligent Content strategy.
Presented at SharePoint TechFest 2015 in Dallas, Texas. This deck explains what ECM is and then dives deeper into the capture portion to better understand the process of gathering requirements from customers. This allows us to create a better ECM solution for them.
That latter portion of the deck also briefly goes into governance and enhanced ECM features expected out of SharePoint 2016.
We are on the cusp of the next major digital disruption. Understanding how content management will change over the next few years will require a better understanding of the content we are managing. We must stop throwing more technology at our content problems and focus on a comprehensive content strategy.
Rapid progress in information technology and electronic communications in the last few decades have profound impact on the way we gather, store, disseminate and consume information. Methodologies and tools for converting information to knowledge have also been very successful. All these have put a lot of pressure on traditional content storehouses like libraries to harness the new technologies for the benefits of their users.
Since Universities around the world own most of these libraries, they have been trying to embrace these newer technologies and have devised suitable methods that are beneficial to their users. They have created a new category of content called e-resources out of all forms of electronic documents and media. In the last few years, investments in these e-resources have increased many folds. Groups of universities have come together to collaboratively address the situation. In many cases, including India, Governments have also funded much of these efforts.
There are parallel efforts of creating additional knowledge resources by individuals for the consumption of individuals. In fact, the volume of effort in this area has been so large that lot of younger people are beginning to break away from traditional library and university system and greatly depend on these open sources. Proliferation of sources like Google, YouTube, Edx, Moocs and ResearchGate have been nothing short of explosive and has perhaps created the largest knowledge democracy.
In this talk, we look at the much of these developments, their implications and discuss a few use cases.
We have also suggested an architecture based on contemporary IT scenarios that will help to plan and setup an e-Resources infrastructure in a University that may be making efforts to either start it or upgrade their existing setup.
The talk concludes by suggesting a few areas of cooperation between the Universities and creating a scale that can dominate in the area of spreading validated information and create a widely spread knowledge-based society.

II-SDV 2017: Localizing International Content for Search, Data Mining and Ana...Dr. Haxel Consult
Advances in text mining, analytics and machine learning are transforming our applications and enabling ever more powerful applications, yet most applications and platforms are designed to deal with a single (normalized) language. Hence as our applications and platforms are increasingly required to ingest international content, the challenge becomes to find ways to normalize content to a single language without compromising quality. An extension of this question in terms of such applications is also how we define quality in this context and what, if any, bi-products a localization effort can produce that may enhance the usefulness of the application.
This talk will, using patent searching as an example use case, review the challenges and possible solution approaches for handling localization effectively and will show what current emerging technology offers, what to expect and what not to expect and provide an introductory practical guide to handling localization in the context of data mining and analytics.

Automating Complex High-Volume Technical Paper and Journal Article Page Compo...dclsocialmedia
SAE International is a global association of more than 138,000 engineers and related technical experts in the aerospace, automotive and commercial-vehicle industries. Annually, SAE organizes and manages an industry conference, its World Congress and Exhibition, where thousands of technical papers and journal articles are presented as part of the conference program. Leading up to the Word Congress, the technical papers and journal articles are reviewed for compliance to SAE publishing requirements and published for print and made available online in a very short time-frame. This paper describes how SAE evolved the production cycle from a less than efficient XSL-FO based process to a highly automated process leveraging NLM XML, XSLT and Adobe InDesign resulting in productivity gains and higher quality output. This paper will take you through the evolution of this project and talk to future enhancements aimed at driving additional benefits.
If everyone write their documents with the intent that they be standardized and converted, conversion to S1000D would be easy. But the reality is that most legacy data lacks the details needed for a full conversion or contains anomalies and irrelevant text. This leads us to the question one must ask: should I convert, rewrite, or manually convert the legacy data? In this presentation, we will attempt to answer this question by reviewing:
o A very quick introduction to S1000D conversions
o What the technical headaches are
o Whether to convert or rewrite
o Planning for a good conversion experience
o What the timeline looks like
o Some tools to help

Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

14. The Precision Content™ Framework
• While the methods can be applied to any structured authoring
toolset, it is optimally suited to DITA/XML
• The Framework consists of a series of
• DITA constraints
• domain and structural specializations
• templates, and
• stylesheets.
• Application of the methodology with the framework provides useful
guidance to authors allowing for better consistency across teams
16. 2 Distinct forms of Language Arts
Language Arts for
Personal Response (LAFPR)
• To emotionally engage the reader
• Techniques:
• narrative style
• varied vocabulary & sentence
structure
• withholding information
• Writer driven
• Meant to be READ
Language Arts for
Information (LAFI)
• To convey information that readers
need to use
• Techniques:
• consistent modular structure
• concise, direct vocabulary
• use of graphics
• Reader driven
• Meant to be USED
18. Ikea Instructions: LAFPR
“The eel-shaped talisman squirms inside the raspy recycled box. A
series of quarter turns – clock hands marking time – bonds back to
base. An alphabet of connections in English and French. “A” into
groove “B”. “C” slots into “D”. Chipboard credenza communicating
Swedish hegemony.”

21. Information typing and classification
• The cornerstone of the methodology is based on correctly identifying,
typing, and labelling blocks of content that comprise a topic
• Each information type has its own rules and semantics for authoring,
labelling, and presentation.
• Precision Content consists of 5 distinct information types including
• Reference
• Principle
• Concept
• Task, and
• Process.

32. Excerpt from a medical journal...
• pN3 description only closely
mirrors descriptions for pN3a
+pN3b + pN3c
• Use of footnotes confusing
• “Clinically detected” and “Not
clinically detected” are not exact
opposites, and
• Inconsistent enumeration of lymph
nodes
33. Same content after Precision Content™
• 44.2% reduction in word count
• 20% reduction in passive voice
• 18.4% increase in Flesch Reading Ease
score
• 30% increase in white space
• Elimination of footnotes, and
• Addition of labels and visual elements
35. Content transformation
• Content conversion and migration to structured authoring presents a
rare opportunity to consider transformation for key, high-value
content.
• Transformation is not conversion and it is not a rewrite – it is a
teardown and rebuild of content from the ground up.
• Transformation usually comes with new and complex requirements
for content creation, management, and delivery.
• Content conversion and transformation can easily coexist when
planned appropriately.
