Two major aspects of rationality are covered: 'epistemic rationality' - forming accurate beliefs and 'instrumental rationality' - the skill of advancing your goals given your resources. Jess then discusses what rationality isnt and some common misconceptions.

Natural Rationality: Beyond Bounded and Ecological Rationality
Decision-making is usually a secondary topic in psychology, relegated to the last chapters of textbooks. Most of the time these chapters acknowledge the failure of the “homo economicus” model and propose to understand human irrationality as the product of heuristic and biases, which may be rational under certain environmental conditions. Psychology pictures decision-making as a deliberative task, studied by multiple-choice tests using the traditional paper and pen method. Psychological research on decision-making assumes that the subjects’ competence in probabilistic reasoning – as revealed by these tests – is a good description of their decision-making capacities. This conception takes for granted (1) that the process of reasoning about action is identical to the process of decision-making and (2) that psychology documents either human failures to comply with rational-choice standards or how mental mechanisms are ecologically rational. In this talk, I argue that decision neuroscience (“neuroeconomics”) may suggest another approach for the study and the nature of decision-making. Research in this field show that information processing in decision is affective, embodied and prosocial: Evolutionary older neural structures, such as the limbic system or dopaminergic neurons, are highly involved in subjective risk and certainty assessment; somatosensory information is integrated in prefrontal areas and helps evaluating choices; In games where players may adopt fair or unfair attitudes, the first ones tend to be more frequent and the second ones elicit emotionally negative reaction.
Moreover, I suggest (against bounded rationality) that these mechanisms achieve near-optimality in social decision-making and (against ecological rationality) that this optimality is not fitness-enhancing. Consequently, I argue that the study of decision-making should be construed as an investigation into “natural rationality” (the mechanisms by which cognitive agents make decisions) and that decision-making should be a central concern for psychology.

What have we learned from an empirical approach to moral psychology - especially in relation to the role of rationality in most every day morality?
What are some lessons that the EA movement can take from moral psychology?
Various moral theorists over the years have had different emphasis on the roles that the head and heart play in moral judgement. Early conceptions of the role of the head in morality were that it drives moral judgement. A Kantian might say that the head/reasoning drives moral judgement – when presented with a dillema of some kind, the human engages with ‘system 2’ like processes in a controlled rational nature. An advocate of a Humean model may favor the idea that emotion or the heart (‘system 1’ thinking) plays the dominant role in moral judgement. Modern psychologists often take a hybrid model where both system 1 and system 2 styles of thinking are at play in contributing to the way we judge right from wrong.

ABSTRACT
Digital media are changing the ways in which books are produced and consumed. In their wide diversity, digital "books" (from enhanced ebooks, to story apps, to game books) challenge the borderlines between books and other forms of digital media. Digital books simultaneously diverge from print books, drawing on other genres and conventions linked to digital affordances, but are also remediating print books, in terms of content, genre conventions, aesthetics, and so on. This presentation starts proposing a typology of digital books that takes into account media convergence, multimodality and remediation from print. Which, by the way, the author thinks will never die out!

What have we learned from an empirical approach to moral psychology - especially in relation to the role of rationality in most every day morality?
What are some lessons that the EA movement can take from moral psychology?
Various moral theorists over the years have had different emphasis on the roles that the head and heart play in moral judgement. Early conceptions of the role of the head in morality were that it drives moral judgement. A Kantian might say that the head/reasoning drives moral judgement – when presented with a dillema of some kind, the human engages with ‘system 2’ like processes in a controlled rational nature. An advocate of a Humean model may favor the idea that emotion or the heart (‘system 1’ thinking) plays the dominant role in moral judgement. Modern psychologists often take a hybrid model where both system 1 and system 2 styles of thinking are at play in contributing to the way we judge right from wrong.

Digital media are changing the ways in which books are produced and consumed. In their wide diversity, digital "books" (from enhanced ebooks, to story apps, to game books) challenge the borderlines between books and other forms of digital media. Digital books simultaneously diverge from print books, drawing on other genres and conventions linked to digital affordances, but are also remediating print books, in terms of content, genre conventions, aesthetics, and so on. This presentation starts proposing a typology of digital books that takes into account media convergence, multimodality and remediation from print. Which, by the way, the author thinks will never die out!

The Frankfurt School and Popular Culture
In this ‘lecture’ we’re going to look at a few important theories and theorists
in the study of popular culture.
To begin, we must understand what is meant by ‘popular culture’. When
most people use this term today, they are referring to the cultural texts of
mainstream American culture. TV shows like the Big Bang Theory,
musicians like Beyonce and Kanye West, movies like the Avengers. These
are all cultural texts that are available to large audiences, and that enjoy
widespread popularity. Not all popular culture is well received by critics, but
it is still ‘popular’ because many people like it, or talk about it, or even know
about it (the Kardashians).
No matter how stupid popular culture may seem at times, it’s important to
realize that there is no such thing as ‘pure’ entertainment. No TV show is
simply mindless entertainment – there are always messages and meanings to
be found. Popular culture – from TV shows to music videos – represents the
culture it comes from. It communicates the values and ideas of a culture, and
in this respect it is extremely useful to study popular culture.
Now, before the days of broadcast media (film, radio, TV, Internet) it was
generally assumed that the values and ideas of a society came from the top -
from the powerful people in society. As Marx wrote, “The ideas of the ruling
class are in every epoch the ruling ideas”. The institutions of power
employed art critics and authors and intellectuals, who told people what was
good art, what was bad art, and what culture was trying to communicate.
Think about the remaining forms of ‘high culture’ today. When you go to an
art gallery, you can look at the paintings and sculptures, but you usually end
up reading the signs next to the art, where someone else tells you what the
art is ‘about’. There are still cultural experts who know which opera singers
are ‘best’, and which classical music is most ‘important’.
If you ever want to see this kind of cultural elitism in action, go downtown
to the SFU Harbour Centre campus. Across Hastings Street from the
university, there is a store called Sikora Music. They sell classical music.
Everything about the store is designed to make you feel stupid. THEY know
classical music, and they know what is worth listening to, and what is not.
They even have a sign in their window, written in detailed calligraphy, that
says they have a “beginners bin” inside. Because (as we have all been
taught), Classical Music is very complex and only smart people can ‘get’ it,
and you would need to spend years LEARNING to appreciate it. Right?

Down on the page, a phrase is going to invite the person to know more about the project and visit the online pages like Site, Facebook and Twitter.
