Fiction refers to any imaginative work where events are not real but invented by the author. This includes novels, short stories, plays, films, television, poetry and songs. Elements of fiction include the plot, which is the sequence of events; exposition, which introduces background information; foreshadowing, which provides hints of things to come; rising action; conflict; climax; falling action; and resolution. Realistic fiction could actually happen while non-realistic fiction involves impossible elements or alternate histories. Semi-fiction is based on true stories but takes fictional liberties.
