August Martin was the first black captain of a U.S. scheduled airline. He was born in 1919 and became a pilot through the civilian pilot training program at UC Berkeley. During WWII, he trained at the Tuskegee Army Air Field and flew bombers. After the war, he struggled to find flying jobs due to racism but eventually flew for multiple airlines. In 1955, he was hired by Seaboard World Airlines as their first black captain. He was killed in 1968 while on a mercy mission to Biafra, Africa.
