According to Māori tradition, all humans are descended from one ancestral pair, Rangi and Papa, who represent Heaven and Earth. Rangi and Papa were originally tightly pressed together, leaving their children and all other beings in perpetual darkness. Their six sons - Tāne Mahuta, Tāwhiri-mātea, Tangaroa, Tūmatauenga, Haumia-tikitiki, and Rongo-mā-Tane - lived for a long time in the darkness, unable to experience light or vision. After a battle between the sons, Tūmatauenga ate four of his brothers but spared Tāwhiri-mātea, explaining why humans
