According to the Maori creation story, Rangi (Heaven) and Papa (Earth) were the original ancestors who clung closely together in darkness. They had six sons - Tane-mahuta (forests), Tawhrir-ma-tea (winds and storms), Tangaroa (fish and reptiles), Tu-Matauenga (humans), Haumia-tikitiki (uncultivated food), and Rongo-ma-tane (cultivated food) - who lived with them in darkness for a long time, wondering what light might be like.
