According to Maori tradition, all humans are descended from the primordial parents Rangi (sky father) and Papa (earth mother). Rangi and Papa were originally locked in a tight embrace, keeping the world in darkness. They had six sons - Tane-mahuta (forests), Tawhiri-ma-tea (winds), Tangaroa (sea life), Haumia-tikitiki and Rongo-ma-tane (cultivated foods). Tu-matauenga ate four of his brothers but spared Tawhiri-ma-tea, explaining why humans are warlike and eat other creatures and why storms exist.
