Volcanoes are caused by molten rock flowing out of fissures in the Earth's surface created by the movement of tectonic plates. There are three types of volcanoes: active volcanoes that frequently erupt, like Mount Etna and Mount Fujiyama; extinct volcanoes that were once active but will not erupt again, such as Kilimanjaro; and dormant volcanoes that erupted in the past but are not currently active, though could erupt again, including Vesuvius.
