Integrity vs Despair

                • Hope is both the earliest
                  and the most indispensable
                  virtue inherent in the state
of being alive. If life is to be
                  sustained hope must
                  remain, even where
                  confidence is wounded,
                  trust impaired. --Erik

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Integrity versus Despair“To be through have being, to face not being”
  • #3 Erikson had a profound interest in humanity and society's well-being in general. This crisis stage highlights the issue very meaningfully. Erickson’s stage of late adulthood could be compared with wisdom and renunciation, where wisdom is full of calmness and tolerance having appropriate emotional detachment. Erik Erikson (1902-1994) said we develop in psychosocial stages. Erikson emphasized developmental change throughout the human life span. In Erikson's theory, eight stages of development unfold as we go through the life span. Each stage consists of a crisis that must be faced. According to Erikson, this crisis is not a catastrophe but a turning point of increased vulnerability and enhanced potential. The more an individual resolves the crises successfully, the healthier development will be.
  • #5 It is to be satisfied and peaceful with one’s life efforts. The previous stage is actually a culmination of one's achievement and contribution to descendants, and potentially future generations everywhere.
  • #6 Wisdom will be as having no regrets and peace of mind without any judgment; having a universal reconciliation and accepting the future which is death. Someone who does not have regrets is someone that despite mistakes made in his or her, this person has learned from them and become wiser. This achievement of emotional maturity and life achievements are reached through the personal interaction with society and the worldOn the other hand, despair is living in denial with a constant “sour grapes” feeling towards what life could have been. A person may be filled with arrogance and unfulfilled goals, a wish to go back in time and change life events, wishing to have a second chance. A person might be constantly feeling there was no purpose in their life and that they are not yet ready to die due to the unfulfilled goals in their lives. A person might be vulnerable to depression and disdain.
  • #9 Late adulthood is a stage where there has to be a revision of possible selves (what we hope to be what we dread to be) and to find a way to manage and adapt between desired and achieved goals. There is an important aspect of understanding adulthood; it is to have a life review. Based on the results of this life review will be the resolution to the integrity and despair crisis. A life review consists in looking back to one’s life experiences and evaluating them. After its evaluation there is an interpretation of those life events, it may even require reevaluating the first evaluation made. (Santrock 2010).
  • #10 There is time to understand many changes a person has to go through in their late years; a person may face an illness. How this person copes with this new event in his or her life will leave him or her with integrity, by having acceptance to this event and evaluating it making changes to balance better his or her. If this person becomes depressed and regrets to have reached this age where he or she has become more prone to an illness, this person has despair. To have a life review is in all the aspects of someone’s life, this will include the social area of their life, his or her culture as well as his or her ethnicity and gender. It can also include relationships with friends and family members as well as the level of intimacy achieved in each group. Each person will have a result unique once this life review is made.
  • #11 There are some examples of regrets in older adults:1. Low income adults may regret about their education and careers, marriage or money.2. Family problems and health problems. The loss of a relative or love one.
  • #12 The integrity examples are:1. Having volunteer, having a strong marriage and achieving personal growth.2. Resolving the loss of a love one. (Santrock 2010)Some older adults may be prone to experience depression due to deteriorating health. There is a high relation between having a religious commitment and being depressed, there is also a relation with living alone and having company.(Santrock 2010)
  • #13 Erikson does not believe that the proper solution to a stage crisis is always completely positive. Some exposure or commitment to the negative end of the person's bipolar conflict is sometimes inevitable- you cannot trust all people under all circumstances and survive, for example. Nonetheless, in the healthy solution to a stage crisis, the positive resolution dominates
  • #14  By achieving a positive life review a person can become prepared to face the inevitable which is death. To do a life review requires for a person to remember not only the good but also the bad. By remembering the bad things there can be an understanding to many changes made in this person’s personality and what has made this person who she or he is now. The way a person thinks about his or herself can be totally different to peers opinions. What will made a person to overcome this late adulthood crisis with integrity is to have a positive life review and to understand the mistakes made have more than regrets in them, these mistakes have given wisdom and better understanding to the purpose of their life. To be content with the relation she or he had with family and the influence he or she had with them, to look back and realize that these individuals have become great individuals due to his or her example.
