Global
decarbonization
is putting the
focus on hydrogen
The fight against climate change
and air pollution is driving the
demand for clean electricity.
Hydrogen can decarbonize
sectors that are difficult to abate.
Hydrogen is a flexible
energy carrier and fuel:
in cars, trucks, buses,
trains and ships
in industry and for
critical infrastructure
3. 3
Buses & trucks
powered by Ballard
• Over 1,000+ buses deployed
• Over 2,200 urban delivery trucks
(3 to 9 tons) in service in China
• Multiple bus platforms with OEMs in Europe, US
and China
• Over 50 million kilometers in service
• > 30,000 hours fuel cell stack life demonstrated
4. 4
Hydrogen is most competitive in heavy duty motive applications
Our focus is on applications where hydrogen fuel cells have a clear advantage
Buses & Coaches Trucks Trains Vessels
Fuel cell technology is needed to decarbonize the heavy duty transportation sector
5. 5
The advantages of
fuel cell vehicles
Battery and fuel cell vehicles are
complementary in commercial
fleets
All weather performance
Range, payload & speed
Refueling time
6. 6
Electrification without
impact on operation &
profitability
Fuel cell trucks can haul a
comparable payload to a diesel
truck
• Continued improvements through lower
weight storage tanks and improved
integration to enable full payloads
Fuel cell trucks are refueled
quickly to maximize revenue
• Vehicle asset is back on the job earning
revenue in only a few minutes
7. 7
Hydrogen fuel is widely
available today
• Scalable infrastructure enables rapid
deployment and scaling of EV fleets
• Existing mature supply chain with competitive
infrastructure & fuel suppliers
• Expansion of renewable hydrogen, and
advancements in hydrogen conversion are
increasing renewable options.
8. 8
Sunline Transit fleet will be zero-
emission by 2035, with 85% FCEBs
• Sunline Transit has been operating FCEBs since 2000 –
now operating 16 FCEBs in one the hottest regions of the
U.S.
• The final fleet composition – 67 fixed FCEBs, 18 fixed route
BEBs and 39 paratransit fuel cell vehicles – was determined
to maximize performance and minimize cost
Sunline ZEB roll out plan 2020
12. 12
The hydrogen supply chain is
evolving and costs are falling
Blue hydrogen
low-carbon hydrogen, generated using non-
renewable energy
Green hydrogen
generated using renewable energy
hydrogen costs are forecast to drop steadily for
the next decade - reaching 60% below current
costs
$1 to 2/kg
