3. Carbon is the most abundant element in the
universe has been known Since ancient times
.Carbon is the most commonly obtained from
coal deposites, although it usually must be
proposed into a form suitable commercial use.
C12, C13, C14 are the isotopes of carbon.
4. Isotopes Of Carbon
Carbon-12,carbon-13,and carbon-14 are the
isotopes of carbon.99% of carbon in nature
is carbon-12. The mass of carbon-12- atom
is the accepted standard for measuring the
masses of atoms. carbon-14 is the radio
active isotope of carbon. The presence of
this isotope is used by scientists to
determine the age of prehistoric materials
and fossils.
5. Carbon in nature
Carbon is one of the elements that occur in the
free state in nature. Carbohydrates ,protein,
oil, fats etc. are carbon compounds other than
these carbonates, bicarbonates, carbon dioxide
etc. are found in the form of carbon.
7. DIAMOND
Diamond is formed by the transformation of graphite
under the earth due to intense heat and pressure. Diamond is
the hardest known substance in the world.
8. GRAPHITE
Graphite is a smooth
solid. Graphite archaically
referred to as plumpage, is
a crystalline form of
carbon, a semi-metal, a
native element mineral,
and one of the allotropes
of carbon. Graphite is the
most stable form of
carbon under standard
conditions.
10. CARBON DIOXIDE(CO2)
Carbon dioxide is the main carbon compound
in the atmosphere. All carbonates except
sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate
decomposes to give co2 on heating, when
carbonates react with acids, co2 gas is
produced.
11. Carbon monoxide (co)
All fuels contain carbon. When carbon
burns it reacts with oxygen to form carbon
difference. However when the amount of
oxygen is not sufficient, then it forms a
poisonous gas known as carbon
monoxide. Co is one of the gases that
causes atmosphireic pollution.
12. Incomplete combustion of fuels
Buring of plastics
Deforestation
Poisonous gas from factories
SOME OCCASIONS CAUSES
ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION
13. GREEN HOUSE EFFECT
The increase of atmospheric
temperature due to the increase
of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere is called ‘green
house effect’.
14. CARBON CYCLE
The diversity of carbon compound is vital
in sustaining life on earth. The process of
changing carbon from inorganic compounds
to organic compounds assumes importance
in this content. The cycle changes of carbon
on the earth in different ways. This is called
carbon cycle.
