Egypt faces a dilemma of growing population putting pressure on limited arable land. Cairo's urban sprawl is consuming some of Egypt's most productive farmland in the Nile Delta. At the same time, Egypt is pursuing mega projects to reclaim desert land and maximize use of the Nile's waters to support its population. Rapid urbanization and loss of farmland to cities like Cairo threatens Egypt's ability to feed itself amid population growth and a fixed land supply.

Held in support of the United Nations Zero Hunger Challenge, in partnership with NAB and the University of Melbourne, this seminar was part of the UNAA Sustainability Leadership Series and sought to build momentum for collective action on food security and sustainable agriculture post Rio +20.
Bringing together experts and practitioners from government, business, civil society, farmers' organisations, research and academia, the seminar sought to provide a platform for shared learning and discussion on Australia's role in addressing the global food security challenge and advancing sustainable agricultural practices.
It highlighted the challenges and opportunities that Australian government, businesses, and NGOs face as they contribute to developing and promoting sustainable food supply chains that increase food production, preserve natural resources and fight hunger at the local, national and global level.

Land is a scarce resource due to increasing population pressures. Only 10% of the Earth's surface is considered habitable for human use. This limited land needs to be allocated for various uses like housing, agriculture, industry, transportation and recreation. This results in competition for land between different uses. The rising demand for land is due to factors like population growth, increased urbanization and economic development. Countries facing land constraints have addressed this by undertaking land reclamation projects to increase available land.

By 2044 we will hit peak population of 8.7B before decreasing to 8B by 2100. This decade we have seen the emergence of three distinct cities - the mega city, the shrinking city and the nomadic city.

Egypt Presentation
Ancient Egypt was centered around the Nile River, which provided fertile land for agriculture. The civilization was divided into Upper and Lower Egypt, which were united under King Menes around 3100 BC. Egyptian society was highly stratified, with powerful pharaohs at the top who were considered divine rulers. Specialized workers such as scribes, artisans, and builders supported the pharaohs and helped construct grand monuments and cities. Religion also played a central role, with polytheistic beliefs influencing how pharaohs governed and the afterlife being an important concept.

- Livelihoods traditionally involved subsistence farming and pastoralism but have diversified over time. Coffee growing was important but declined due to management issues. Rice farming has increased as a livelihood since the 1970s due to irrigation projects.

Neither scenario alone ensures long-term, resilient food security and ecosystem protection. Until the 1970s, traditional pastoralism used to be a successful livelihood strategy in drought-prone East African lowlands, where the rainfall regime is low and unreliable, and where mobility was essential for ensuring access to critical water and feed resources. It also provided space for the rangeland to regenerate. However, the traditional livelihood strategy has been increasingly constrained.

Indigo
Indigo arrived in Europe through Portuguese trade routes in the early 16th century, but faced prohibitions from powerful guilds representing native woad growers who saw indigo as competition. Despite bans, indigo continued to flow into Europe from both east and west as other European powers like Spain and France established indigo plantations in their new world colonies. While indigo was seen as superior for its deep blue color, it was also viewed with suspicion in places like Germany for being "corrosive" and "deceitful."
