There are several types and sources of power, including legitimate, referent, expert, reward, coercive, and informational power. Skills used to acquire power include leadership, information processing, conflict resolution, and decision making. Strategies for developing power include cultivating a powerful self-image through grooming, manners, body language, speech, attitude, and commitment to continued development. In nursing, power can be used to empower others and effect change through sharing decision-making, developing expertise, and drawing on multiple sources of power.
