This document provides an overview of Pound and Varnish, which are reverse proxies and HTTP accelerators used for load balancing and caching. It discusses what Pound and Varnish are, how to install them on Debian, how to configure their configuration files (pound.cfg and vcl.conf), examples of their configuration files, who uses Varnish, and additional information resources. The presenter is introduced at the end.
Building a network emulator with Docker and Open vSwitchGoran Cetusic
A short description of container namespaces, Linux virtual Ethernet interfaces and how to use them in Docker and Open vSwitch to create a self-contained network with hundreds of nodes on a single host machine.
Managing a powerful SCM like Perforce requires certain infrastructure. Changes to the infrastructure can become challenging and destabilize the system. See how MathWorks uses the flexibility of Perforce to manage and monitor a complex infrastructure.

Scaling out on the cloud is easy. Especially, if you have a software provisioning system that helps you to deploy your environment wherever you want. This session will give you an overview of the fantastic new features of HAProxy V 1.5, and how you can integrate it into your environment to build a high available environment, using open source software. Starting with a single-webserver + mysql setup provisioned via chef, we will deploy an HA Proxy Cluster in front and scale out your nginx and mysql database backend.
Peer-to-peer networks are right solution for distributing mostly static content to multiple clients while exploiting bandwidth of all clients to share file chunks and available bandwidth.
Torrent is currently most used P2P network protocol, but in this day and age it suffers from lack of official specification and has stigma attached to it. However, if you want to distribute software updates or create multiple disaster recovery sites it makes sense to create private torrent network which will to it's job.
In this presentation I will try to explain what it takes to create your own peer-to-peer cloud based on torrent protocol.
The presentation is the result of my investigating if there is an open source development framework that can manage complex robotic systems. If so,should it be recommended to be used in advanced high school/undergraduate levels.

Apache and PHP: Why httpd.conf is your new BFF!Jeff Jones
Apache's configuration files can be used to configure how Apache operates, but they can also be used to configure PHP and how Apache httpd interacts with PHP. In this talk, Jeff explains the different ways Apache can be configured, explains many of the useful config options available for Apache modules, including our own mod_php, and showcases example of how they can be used with, and instead of, your PHP code.
IPv6 is slowly making its way into our environments and we need to be aware of how it impacts the systems we manage. This presentation takes us through a basic review of the protocol from a pentesters perspective

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
