Early postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) occurs within the first 24 hours after delivery, while late PPH occurs between 24 hours and 12 weeks. The four main causes of PPH are uterine atony (75-90% of cases), trauma to the birth canal, retained placental tissue, and clotting abnormalities. Visual assessment of blood loss, the most common method, is inaccurate and inconsistent between observers and often underestimates actual blood loss. Proper management of PPH requires recognizing risk factors and treating its underlying causes.
