Guadalcanal
The Battle of Guadalcanal was a major turning point in WWII. In August 1942, US and Australian troops landed on Guadalcanal to seize a key airfield from Japanese forces. They were able to take the Japanese by surprise. Both sides fought fiercely over the next several months to control the strategically important island. Though the environment made fighting difficult, the Allies proved more capable of reinforcing their troops. By January 1943, American numbers had grown too large, forcing the remaining Japanese troops to evacuate and giving the Allies control of Guadalcanal.

Another internationally acknowledged drama, Cesiri Tono ("Fruits of Perserverance"), proves to listeners that it’s okay to give women the right to work outside of their homes. The drama has changed the beliefs of people in Côte d’Ivoire, Mail, and Burkina Faso. In Mali, research revealed that 53 percent of people had changed perspectives due to the drama.
PMC’s Work Mitigates Beliefs About Genital Mutilation
The chairman and CEO of Population Institute in Washington, D.C., Bill "William" Ryerson strives to educate important leadership constituents about the population aspect of current events like food and water shortages, and security issues, among other factors. Experienced in the reproductive health industry, Bill Ryerson fights for gender equality, reproductive health, and other forms of violence against women and girls, including female genital mutilation (FGM) through Population Media Center (PMC), a Vermont-based non-profit organization.
For decades PMC has been working to make the planet a fair and better place for females since female gender appears to have been robbed of the majority of human rights in the name of religion and culture. Pursuing the aforementioned purpose, PMC disseminates information that combats problematic beliefs in certain cultures in a formal manner. One of the problems PMC recognizes and has devoted significant efforts to eradicating is female genital mutilation.
Female genital mutilation is the act of injuring the external female genitalia by means of partial or complete removal for non-medical reasons. Some societies support female genital mutilation as a punishment for women and girls or as a rite of passage into womanhood. In any case, female genital mutilation is a violation of basic human rights, according to UNICEF. The practice causes long-term psychological and physical discomfort in females. It also predisposes women to future complications after childbirth. Examples of these complications are early neonatal death and postpartum hemorrhage.
Through its Hεrε S’ra ("The Road to Happiness"), PMC disseminates information that reveals the negative impacts of female genital mutilation. The drama was first aired in Burkina Faso in September 2021, and it took almost two years to air the entire episodes. Many listeners agreed that genital mutilation is indeed a useless practice due to the drama.
Advancing Society through PMC’s Theory of Change
A founder and president of the Population Media Center (PMC), William "Bill" Ryerson has been involved in creating programs that promote social and cultural change. At PMC, Bill Ryerson oversees programming that features complex behavioral interventions based on psychological and psychosocial theories.
PMC works through its Theory of Change to affect positive change in communities and empower people to live healthier lives by helping girls/women, communities, and whole populations realize their rights as human beings. The first aspect of this theory is to meet people in their communities. By immersing teams in the communities that are a part of the fictional content, they can accurately interpret, represent, and address harmful social norms through long-running entertainment.
Beyond broadcasting a snapshot of a community, PMC also analyzes community social norms and then creates behavioral norms that facilitate change in the community. These behavioral norms are the basis of fictional plots and character development.
There are three types of characters that PMC integrates within their narratives: transitional, positive, and negative characters. Transitional characters are average people in society who are primary role models, and through scriptwriting models, audience members are encouraged to connect to these characters. Positive characters are the larger-than-life characterizations representing the ideal change on an issue and the desired behavior change. Finally, negative characterizations represent harmful social norms. While the characters might be gregarious, charming, and attention-grabbing, they tend to possess dysfunctional behaviors than desired social norms.
PMC then attempts to reach large audiences through popular broadcast channels. Ultimately, through the Theory of Change model, the organization aspires to help communities adopt and implement positive behaviors.
The Strategy he White House Gender Policy Council
A Vermont nonprofit leader, William “Bill” Ryerson guides the Population Institute (PI) and Population Media Center (PMC). His organizations help sustainability by advocating for women to attain basic reproductive rights and access to sexual health services. In October 2021, Bill Ryerson and PI highlighted the progress made by the Biden-Harris administration in releasing a first-ever White House Gender Policy Council strategy.
This national strategy aims to develop a framework for ensuring that domestic and international policy consistently advances gender equality and equity ideals. The plan includes outreach components to demonstrate how this approach benefits communities, families, and people around the world.
As explored on the PI website, this “whole of government” approach spans 10 interrelated priorities, including economic security, climate change, and humanitarian relief. Within the health priority is expanded access to care that includes safe and legal abortion. This is not a new proposal but a following of the precedent set in the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. At the same time, the initiative supports broader efforts by the United Nations Population Fund to tackle gender-based violence, which has been on the rise.
Population Institute’s State-by-State Reproductive Health Report Card
Based in Vermont, William “Bill” Ryerson guides the Population Institute (PI) and pursues a mission of sustainability and women’s empowerment. Bill Ryerson’s organization acts as a strong advocate of gender equality and reproductive health services that may impact the future.
PI created a “State of Reproductive Health and Rights” report card for each of the 50 states. Each state’s report card assigns grades on four broad indicators, starting with Effectiveness (20 points). This indicator marks the state’s teenage pregnancy rate and the percentage of unintended pregnancies.
Another component, Prevention (30 points), grades the states' policies on sex education and the ability of nurses to distribute reproductive health medications. This indicator also considers whether minors can consent to contraceptive services.
Affordability (25 points), the third indicator, includes policies that make birth control affordable to uninsured people and people with low incomes. This indicator also encompasses state-mandated insurance coverage for abortion services and whether the state expanded Medicaid access through the Affordable Care Act.
Finally, Access (25 points) evaluates whether burdensome or harassing requirements are placed on women searching for family planning and abortion services.
The Population Institute survey gave the United States a failing grade, with 18 states receiving a grade B or higher and 27 receiving a D or lower. This left only five states in the C range.

The Population Media Center spreads awareness about child slavery in Haiti through their radio drama Zoukoutap. Zoukoutap is a 78 episode serial drama that airs on radio stations in Haiti and addresses social issues such as child slavery. The drama educates listeners about Haiti's restavek system, where children are supposed to be placed with families to receive food and education but often experience child slavery instead. Zoukoutap gained popularity during its 10 month run, with over 1.5 million people listening to rebroadcasts and 700,000 tuning into at least one episode. The success of educating about child slavery led to a 156 episode sequel launching in May 2015.

Water contamination is one of the major causes of water borne diseases worldwide. In Kenya, approximately 43% of people lack access to potable water due to human contamination. River Kuywa water is currently experiencing contamination due to human activities. Its water is widely used for domestic, agricultural, industrial and recreational purposes. This study aimed at characterizing bacteria and fungi in river Kuywa water. Water samples were randomly collected from four sites of the river: site A (Matisi), site B (Ngwelo), site C (Nzoia water pump) and site D (Chalicha), during the dry season (January-March 2018) and wet season (April-July 2018) and were transported to Maseno University Microbiology and plant pathology laboratory for analysis. The characterization and identification of bacteria and fungi were carried out using standard microbiological techniques. Nine bacterial genera and three fungi were identified from Kuywa river water. Clostridium spp., Staphylococcus spp., Enterobacter spp., Streptococcus spp., E. coli, Klebsiella spp., Shigella spp., Proteus spp. and Salmonella spp. Fungi were Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus flavus complex and Penicillium species. Wet season recorded highest bacterial and fungal counts (6.61-7.66 and 3.83-6.75cfu/ml) respectively. The results indicated that the river Kuywa water is polluted and therefore unsafe for human consumption before treatment. It is therefore recommended that the communities to ensure that they boil water especially for drinking.
Evolving Lifecycles with High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) and 3-D...
The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.
