A Vermont nonprofit leader, William “Bill” Ryerson guides the Population Institute (PI) and Population Media Center (PMC). His organizations help sustainability by advocating for women to attain basic reproductive rights and access to sexual health services. In October 2021, Bill Ryerson and PI highlighted the progress made by the Biden-Harris administration in releasing a first-ever White House Gender Policy Council strategy. This national strategy aims to develop a framework for ensuring that domestic and international policy consistently advances gender equality and equity ideals. The plan includes outreach components to demonstrate how this approach benefits communities, families, and people around the world. As explored on the PI website, this “whole of government” approach spans 10 interrelated priorities, including economic security, climate change, and humanitarian relief. Within the health priority is expanded access to care that includes safe and legal abortion. This is not a new proposal but a following of the precedent set in the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. At the same time, the initiative supports broader efforts by the United Nations Population Fund to tackle gender-based violence, which has been on the rise.
