Many adult learning studies have shown that people generally only retain 10% of what they read one year afterwards, but retain up to 50% of what they read, hear, and watch– and up to 90% of what they actively participate in. For non-fiction publishers that concentrate on books that teach new skills sets or ideas, it is enticing to produce products whereby readers can have up to nine times the learning and therefore up to nine times the propensity to utilize this learning in their everyday lives. Therefore, non-fiction publishers have a vested stake in moving up the learning spectrum from the lower left-hand side to the upper right-hand side.
