A position paper presents an arguable stance on an issue in order to persuade the audience that the author's opinion is valid. The author must examine all sides of the issue and support their argument with evidence from factual knowledge, statistics, informed opinions, and personal testimony. A strong position paper will have a clear thesis, summarize counterarguments and refute them with evidence, and provide at least three sources to support the author's claims over the course of a two-page, single-spaced paper following the specified format of an introduction, counterargument, argument, and conclusion sections.

WRITING ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS
For most people, the true test of their critical thinking skills comes when they write an argumentative essay, one that takes a stand on an issue and uses logic and evidence to convince readers. When you write an argument, you follow the same process you use when you write any essay. However, because the purpose of an argument is to change the way readers think, you need to use some additional strategies to present your ideas to your audience.
A)
Planning an Argumentative Essay
1) Choosing a Debatable Topic
Because an argumentative essay attempts to change the way people think, it must focus on a
debatable topic
, one about which reasonable people may disagree. Factual statements—verifiable assertions about which reasonable people do not disagree—are, therefore, not suitable as topics for argument.
Fact:
First-year students are not required to purchase a meal plan from the university.
Debatable Topic:
First-year students should be required to purchase a meal plan from the university.
Your topic should be narrow enough so that you can write about it within your page limit. Remember, in your argumentative essay, you will have to develop your own ideas and present convincing support while also pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of opposing arguments. If your topic is too broad, you will not be able to treat it in enough detail.
In addition, your topic should be interesting to you and to your readers. Keep in mind that some topics—such as “The Need for Gun Control” or “The Fairness of the Death Penalty”—have been discussed and written about so often that you may not be able to say anything new or interesting about them. Instead of relying on an overused topic, choose one that enables you to contribute something to the debate.
2) Developing an Argumentative Thesis
After you have chosen a topic, your next step is to state your position in an
argumentative thesis
, one that takes a strong stand. Properly worded, this thesis statement lays the foundation for the rest of your argument. One way to make sure that your thesis statement actually does take a stand is to formulate an
antithesis
, a statement that takes the opposite position. If you can state an antithesis, your thesis statement takes a stand.
Thesis Statement:
Term limits would improve government by bringing people with fresh ideas into office every few years.
Antithesis:
Term limits would harm government because elected officials would always be inexperienced.
To make sure your argumentative thesis is effective, ask the following questions:
Is your thesis one with which reasonable people would disagree?
Can you formulate an antithesis?
Can your thesis be supported by evidence?
Does your thesis make clear to readers what position you are taking?
3) Defining Your Terms
You should always define the key terms you use in your argument— especially those you use in your thesis statement. After all, the soundness of an ...

English 1: Argumentative Essay Assignment
The Assignment: Write a six-to-ten page argument paper that addresses a current issue that will address our theme of the impact of technology on communication on ourselves, on our world and on what it means to be human (Barrios, 583). The topic and the issue for this paper is the same as your exploratory paper assignment. The purpose of this paper is to present your position on the issue and then argue why by presenting your own reasons and evidence to support your thesis statement.
Locating Sources for Research. The purpose of the exploratory paper was to explore different writers and their position, their perspective, and the types of evidence they used in order to form your own position and perspective. You have three sources that you may use in your paper. For this paper, you must include a variety of sources; they cannot all come from Web sites. Search SMC’s library online catalog, search for a book, search online databases, find newspaper articles, use the search engine Google scholar at www.google.com, or www.yahoo.com . In addition, observations or experience from your personal life are not allowable. Refer to the following handouts: “Research Guide for Papers,” “Sources Acceptable for Academic Papers.” Both of these handouts are on eCompanion. If you include an article from a Website, there must be a date and a sponsor/publisher. If this is not available you cannot use this source.
Thesis Statement and Claim: Does your thesis clearly include a claim? Is it arguable? Does it take a perspective on an issue? Is it narrow and specific enough for the length of this assignment? Is it focused on one subject? Is it a claim of policy where you argue that certainpolicies should be changed? Is it a claim of value where you argue that some action, belief, or policy is morally wrong, good, or bad? Once your claim is clear, you must develop reasons that match and correspond to the type of claim being made.
Audience/Point of View: An effective argument is tailored to its audience. The reasons and the types of evidence you offer, the needs and values to which you appeal, terms defined, all depend on your audience and the type of claim. Ask: What does your audience know or not know about your topic? The audience is your instructor and classmates. Never assume that the audience is familiar with your topic or terms. You may need to include definitions and relevant details to help the audience understand your position in the first body paragraph. For this argument essay, you will use only the third-person point of view. No, “I” “We” or “You.”
Content/Body Paragraphs. For the length of this assignment, you should have at least three-to-four distinct and relevant reasons to support your thesis. Follow the guidelines for writing the argument paper when developing your reasons. Use the “because” clause approach.

The Fatherhood Project should be organized to address the followin.docxanhcrowley
The Fatherhood Project should be organized to address the following two major questions:
Given the aforementioned differences that exist between men in the US, how does the sociological imagination help you to position black fathers into the historical roles (child-rearing and breadwinner) previously mentioned? And, what theoretical perspective/perspectives would best explain why black fathers are not able to fulfill the breadwinner role in the United States? To help you address the aforementioned questions, project members should e
ngage in a semi-structured interview with eight persons (5 males and 5 females). These individuals can be your peers, family members, persons on campus or even strangers. Ask about their thoughts on what father involvement means to them, if there are differences in how black fathers are perceived in relation to white fathers and what do they feel, if any, account for these differences.
Ensure to collect data on the age, race/ethnicity, gender, perceived socio-economic status, religious affiliation, level of education and family structure, of the persons you interview (no names are to be solicited).
The Fatherhood Project should include:
Introduction/Background
-
A working definition, or definitions, of father involvement and detail the sociological and historical evolution of fathering in the U.S.
Theoretical Perspectives (this section can be combined with the first section)
-
Assess the successes and failures of two theoretical frameworks that you will use in your paper to explain your results on fathering.
Analyses/Discussion
-
Using the semi-structured interviews, write a detailed critique of what father involvement means, noting the differences that exist in the definitions, the differences in how black fathers and white fathers are perceived and the reason for these perceived differences. Please make note of how the aforementioned differences are stratified by race/ethnicity, gender, education, socio-economic background etc.
The Father Involvement Project
is a group assignment and asks you to develop a critical response with regard to the following quote, subsequent statements and questions:
“His job is elsewhere… because his fundamental value to the family is maintaining the connection to the elsewhere . . . Fathers have been far away for centuries: on military campaigns, as sailors on distant seas for years at a time; as cattle drivers, travelers, trappers, prospectors, messengers, prisoners, jobbers, peddlers, slavers, pirates, missionaries, migrant workers. The work week was once seventy-two hours. The construct ‘‘fatherhood’’ shows widely different faces in different countries, classes, occupations, and historical times. Only today is absence so shaming, and declared a criminal, even criminal-producing behavior.” (Hillman, 1996; pg. 80-81).

The FASB’s Conceptual Framework and Statements of Financial Accounti.docxanhcrowley
The FASB’s Conceptual Framework and Statements of Financial Accounting Standards (SFASs) require full disclosures to be made in a business enterprise’s financial statements. These disclosures requirements are applicable to corporations and nonprofit organizations. The purpose of these disclosures is to provide reliable and relevant information to the users of the financial statements. In addition to disclosures required by the FASB, nonprofits must also be in compliance with regulations enacted by Congress as well as local laws.
You currently work for a nonprofit organization as a staff accountant. The controller has requested that you conduct research on disclosure requirements for nonprofit organizations to ascertain if the organization is in compliance with established FASB requirements and any other regulations applicable to nonprofits, such as IRS regulations.
Prepare a written report of 2–5 pages that includes the following:
Describe financial accounting disclosures required for nonprofit organizations and how these disclosures provide useful information to users.
Explain disclosure requirements for nonprofit organizations, such as the tax-exempt determination letters required by Congress and the IRS.
Discuss the reasons for these disclosure requirements and the sentiments of the public and government about deviations and scandals in this sector because of lack of disclosures.
Include a minimum of 3 properly researched and cited facts using APA format as they apply to the disclosure requirements for nonprofit organizations.

The ethical status of nursing homes is deeply affected by their cu.docxanhcrowley
The ethical status of nursing homes is deeply affected by their cultural image. For a culture with deep anti-institutional biases and often romanticized versions of "family" and the freedoms of "home," nursing homes are especially suspect (Collopy & Boyles, 1991). They are "total institutions" where personal freedom, privacy, and range of choice have little chance (Collopy & Boyles, 1991).
However, the picture is changing. While many nursing homes still do function like impersonal and regimented institutions, over the last decade, a grassroots movement in long-term care known as "culture change," or "resident-centered care," has begun to spread throughout the country (Haran, 2006). Moody originally wrote Chapters 7 & 8 in the late 1980s when this movement was just beginning and thus he doesn’t discuss “culture change” in your textbook.
Does “culture change” embrace Moody’s Negotiated Consent model? Why or why not?

The Enlightenment freed humankind from what many considered the “superstitions of religion” and paved the way for the Industrial Revolution with its focus on science and reason over religion and faith. Consider that Frankenstein was written when humanity was on the cusp of incredible achievement. Vaccination for the devastating disease smallpox began in the late 18th century, and a wealth of inventions led to the factory and mass-productions of goods. Factories, however, resulted in people working long, grueling hours, often in unsafe conditions.
Two literary styles, Gothic and Romantic, developed as a reaction to Enlightenment thinking’s emphasis on the human ability and the power of the human mind, to the horrors of the French Revolution (which was itself influenced by Enlightenment thinkers), and the remarkable changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, both good and bad. These literary styles focus on the imperfections of human beings and the powerful force of nature.

The Exclusionary Rule
Defendants in criminal trials have one main weapon to prevent their conviction before trial. That weapon is called the Exclusionary Rule. The Exclusionary Rule holds that evidence obtained through a violation of a defendant's constitutional rights is inadmissible at trial. This primarily applies to Fourth Amendment search and seizure. Further, the evidence obtained illegally may make inadmissible other evidence obtained from the original evidence (i.e., the fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine). Therefore, it is important for all judges, lawyers, police officers, and other legal professionals to understand the nuances of this fact-intensive rule.
Review Chapter 3, § 3.1 and 3.2, in your course text, Constitutional Law, and focus on the fundamentals of the Fourth Amendment.

Now it's your turn to be the author. Continue where O. Henry left off and write the next fifteen minutes of the story. Remember to write this as a narrative.
This is a question that I got from language arts class after we read A Retrieved Reformation by O. Henry

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

1. Position Paper Format
A position paper
presents an arguable opinion about an issue
. The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that
your opinion is valid and worth listening to. Ideas that you are
considering need to be carefully examined in choosing a topic,
developing your argument, and organizing your paper. It is
very important to ensure that you are addressing all sides of
the issue and presenting it in a manner that is easy for your
audience to understand.
Your job is to take one side of the argument and persuade
your audience that you have well-founded knowledge of the
topic being presented.
It is important to support your argument with evidence to
ensure the validity of your claims, as well as
to address the counterclaims
to show that you are well informed about both sides.
Issue Criteria:
To take a side on a subject, you should first establish the
“arguability” of a topic that interests you. Ask yourself the
following questions to ensure that you will be able to present a
2. strong argument:
Is it a real issue, with genuine controversy and
uncertainty?
Can you distinctly identify two positions?
Are you personally interested in advocating one of these
positions?
Is the issue narrow enough to be manageable?
Analyzing an Issue and Developing an Argument
Once your topic is selected, you should do some research on
the subject matter. While you may already have an opinion on
your topic and an idea about which side of the argument you
want to take, you need to ensure that your position is well
supported.
Listing out the pro and con sides of the topic will help you
examine your ability to support your counterclaims, along with
a list of supporting evidence for both sides.
Supporting evidence includes the following:
Factual Knowledge -
Information that is verifiable and agreed upon by almost
everyone.
Statistical Inferences -
Interpretation and examples of an accumulation of facts.
Informed Opinion -
Opinion developed through research and/or expertise of the
3. claim.
Personal Testimony -
Personal experience related by a knowledgeable party.
Once you have made your pro and con lists, compare the
information side by side. Considering your audience, as well
as your own viewpoint, choose the position you will take. In
considering the audience, ask yourself the following questions:
Who is your audience?
What do they believe?
Where do they stand on the issue?
How are their interests involved?
What evidence is likely to be effective with them?
In determining your viewpoint, ask yourself the following:
Is your topic interesting?
Can you manage the material within the specifications set
by the instructor?
Does your topic assert something specific and propose a
plan of action?
Do you have enough material to support your opinion?
4. Organization
Your introduction should lead up to a thesis that organizes
the rest of your paper. There are three advantages to
leading with the thesis:
1. The audience knows where you stand.
2. The thesis is located in the two strongest places, first
and last.
3. It is the most common form of academic argument
used.
Below is a generic format for a position paper:
I. Introduction
___A. Introduce the topic
___B. Provide background on the topic
___C. Assert the thesis (your view of the issue)
II. Counter Argument
___A. Summarize the counterclaims
___B. Provide supporting information for counterclaims
5. ___C. Refute the counterclaims
___D. Give evidence for argument
III. Your Argument
___A. Assert point #1 of your claims
_____1. Give your opinion
_____2. Provide support
___B. Assert point #2 of your claims
_____1. Give your opinion
_____2. Provide support
___C. Assert point #3 of your claims
_____1. Give your opinion
_____2. Provide support
IV. Conclusion
___A. Restate your argument
6. ___B. Provide a plan of action
You will need
at least three sources
for your argument,
in the argument section
, but the more the better. Sources cited other sections are useful,
but do not count towards the required 3.
Position papers are to be two pages, single-spaced following the
format above. Additionally, you should have a separate page for
references in APA format, single-spaced.
