The document discusses a thesis project that proposes using a large development project to help transform an existing city. Specifically, it focuses on using an International Financial Center development in Ahmedabad, India to upgrade the city's infrastructure in areas like transportation, sanitation, utilities, and public spaces. The author argues that cities should improve their existing infrastructure and built environments before pursuing large projects on the outskirts. By selecting sites based on project needs and impacts rather than just land costs, such mega projects can catalyze regeneration that benefits surrounding areas. The thesis then presents design strategies and plans for how the financial center could be laid out to maximize these benefits for Ahmedabad.

She received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004—the first woman to do so—and the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011. Her buildings are distinctively futuristic, characterized by the "powerful, curving forms of her elongated structures"[1] with "multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry to evoke the chaos of modern life"
In this theory the form is outcome of various physical, social, psychological and symbolic functions
For example if we want to design concert hall, the form will be the abstract of functional data which is defined by the distance of the seats the place of foyer the relation between all functions and also a symbolic appearance of the building. In this type of design the context of the building is not considered and we can put the designed project in different sites and places with no attention to the contextual matters. In this theory architects must act like a scientist. It means that they have to find some form in a body of pre existing facts. So it can be named as kind of true and false game. The designer will do its job according to client`s needs climatological conditions and community values. The difference is here that architects cannot define general lows for the design solution as like as the scientists do.

Collaborating with the Crowd: Online Planning & Consultation
Dr Mark Elliott, Director, Collabforge
“Social media”, “online collaboration and consultation”, “government 2.0” - these disruptive trends are changing and challenging the landscape of business as usual consultation and planning practice. What’s all the noise about and what are the opportunities? New online tools and approaches are introducing a new reality, one where complex tasks such as writing an encyclopaedia or engaging an entire metropolis in public policy development can be “crowd-sourced” through online participation.
These new approaches not only afford for broader engagement and extended audience reach, but they also lead to better outcomes through tapping collective intelligence and increasing shared ownership and buy-in. This session will showcase a range of successful Gov 2.0 initiatives such as the City of Melbourne’s Future Melbourne (‘The city plan anyone can edit’) and wePlan Parks Victoria (‘Help guide the future of Victoria’s Parks’), with a focus on introducing you to the key opportunities and considerations.

Creating Smarter Cities 2011 - 03 - Joe Dignan - Microsoft - Connected govern...Smart Cities Project
Cities are the world’s economic engines and we are in the grips of a second great migration to the city. The analyst community has highlighted that the critical enabling mechanism to ameliorate these challenges is a gestalt ICT framework. Microsoft is a partner for a majority of the world’s cities and is taking up the challenge to define a global ICT framework for cities as part of their connected government framework.
2. Mega Project as a Tool to Transform Existing City BASE MAP (EXISTING)
Academic Work: Mega Project as a Tool to Transform Existing City, M.Arch (Urban Design) Thesis (2009) Case: International Financial Center - Ahmedabad
Developing Nations (South East Asian Countries) are coming up
with Mega Projects and these Mega Projects has become
cornerstone of Nation Building. But mostly these projects are not
proposed within city, all the mega projects proposed in these
countries are outskirts of the city.
Main reason for these trends is lack of infrastructure available in
the city. The available infrastructure is very poor and it can not
support the development which the Mega project is
demanding. Same conditions with the built environment of the
existing city.
But taking Mega Project as an opportunity for an existing city, one
can upgrade the infrastructure of the existing city through Mega
Project in terms of transport, sanitation, water supply, recreational
areas etc.
Once the existing city is up to date with infrastructure and quality
of built environment then only one should go for peripheral
(edge) development.
The selection of site for any project should not be decided by the
cost of the land and availability of the land, but it should be
decided by the requirement of the project and benefits and
after effect of the project.
DESIGN STRATEGY
Maximizing the advantage of IFC for the Ahmedabad City
The IFC can become a catalyst for new development in
surrounding areas.
Guidelines to spread the benefits of the urban regeneration to
the surrounding areas
Zoning based on existing and future infrastructure and transport
network
Continuous Green Network
Integrate public and private spaces and enhance people’s use
and enjoyment of the City
Preserve important parts of the City's heritage
The GDCR could be moulded to facilitate city development
Opening the rear entry of existing Kalupur Railway Station will
improve the connectivity to the IFC and Eastern Ahmedabad.
