Gabriele Nolè, Rosa Lasaponara, Maria Danese, Beniamino Murgante and Antonio Lanorte on "Analyzing urban growth with spatial autocorrelation in multi-temporal satellite data"
GIS systems enable the electronic management of spatial data and facilitate its visualisation; they are specialised forms of information systems that are conceived solely for use with spatial data. Their purpose is the collection, modelling, storage, manipulation, analysis, retrieval and presentation of geodata. During the Smart Cities Project we examined the geobased services that were being used by the project’s six municipal partners. This guide provides a detailed review of the systems that are being used by two of these partners – the City of Edinburgh Council in Scotland, and Kristiansand Kommune in Norway – who had the most advanced geobased infrastructures in the Smart Cities partnership.
Getting It Done with limited staff, time and budget.
This slide show shares a process of developing a GIS plan and framework, shows tools to track and implement the plan, and shows examples of how the GIS plan is directly tied with City initiatives and budget.

highlight future investment programmes.
2. B) Minot, City OF, Redevelopment
Software Used: ArcGis, Auto Cad Civil 3D, Autodesk Infraworks
Role: GIS Engineer
Details: The Project was redevelopment of Road in city of Minot. I was involved from bidding to its
completion phase. The main task was to create 3D visualization of roads, underground features,
aesthetics enhancement. Autodesk Infraworks was used in this project. Infraworks was used also to
identify clash detection of underground utilities and then these errors were later removed in Civil3D.
C) Fiji Road Asset and Maintenance Management System
Software Used: ArcGis, Auto Cad Civil 3D, Autodesk Infraworks
Role: GIS Engineer
Details: The scope of the project is to establish a GIS based Road Asset and Maintenance
Management System (RAMMS) for around 11,000km of road spread out in the urban and rural areas
of Fiji. Was involved in digitising missing roads and extend roads that have missing sections, major
intersections and roundabouts, realigning existing roads ensuring correct topology.
.
D) Financial affordability model For Springfield, City OF
Software Used: ArcGis, Autodesk Infraworks, MS Excel
Role: GIS Engineer
Details: The task was to prepare financial affordability model for installation of future water meters
till year 2033. Financial affordability was indexed to census tract id. These tract ids were used to
create model per year and was shown in graphical format in Infraworks. Proposals created per year
till year 2033.
E) Qatar Master Plan Data Management and Mapping
Software Used: Arc Gis, Auto Cad Map,3D Analyst tools, Spatial Analyst
Role: GIS Engineer
Details: The objective of the project is to develop an Integrated Drainage Master Plan for surface
water, groundwater, and foul water and TSE systems throughout Qatar. Was involved in Data
Management, Data Clean up, Model Building, Sub catchment Delineation, creating quality maps using
data driven pages.
F) BRIMSTOWAD
Software Used: Arc Gis, Auto Cad Map, Arc Swat, Spatial Analyst
Role: GIS Engineer
Details: This project is planned to overhaul Mumbai's water drainage system. The existing system, is
more than 100 years old, consists of 2,000 km of open drains, 440 km of closed drains, 186 outfalls
and more than 30,000 water entrances. The scope of work includes providing effective storm water
drainage solutions that include widening of storm water drains; rehabilitation of major drains,
updating the Master Plan, and implementation of an early flood warning system using a storm water
management model.
Task Involved was delineation of watershed for waste water networks through visual inspection of
contours, auto delineation using ArcSWAT, hydrology tools in Spatial analyst and 3D Analyst - ArcGIS.
Providing GIS training. Checking the GIS work completed by the team.
G) Hamilton Water On GIS
Software Used: Arc Gis, Auto Cad Map.
Role: GIS Analyst
Details: In March 2010, Hamilton City Council (HCC), NZ, began a pilot phase to digitise its water assets into
GIS. All HCC water asset data was held on paper plans (hard copies of AS BUILT/Logs). It was important to
convert this data into digital form as a part of HCC’s three waters modelling strategy. Innovative approach of
using global resources adopted by HCC that ensured cost effective digitization of assets with high quality.
Pilot study was carried out with 32 logs (15% of total work) with different areas e.g. high density residential,
high density industrial, low density residential etc. to decide methodology and production rate for full
conversion phase. I led the project and set up the workflows, trained some of the personnel and managed
aspects of project delivery as well as quality assurance systems.
