more people into the cities. This is a cumulative process which has raised issues of scarcity of resources and
lack of security among the increased population in the urban areas. The concept of Smart cities is viewed as a
solution to this problem thus enhancing the quality of existing public services. Internet of Things (IoT) is an
approach to build smart cities by interconnecting almost everything and increasing transparency in services.
IoT follows heterogeneous network architecture with application specific protocols. This paper presents the
importance of smart cities and IoT approach towards achieving the smartness.

It was a coincidence that during panel discussions I came across team from Deloitte and C44, instrumental in preparation of NTK's winning Smart City Proposal. For me it was one of the happiest moment for being in the same panel with current mentors, as I was involved with the NTK project from pre-takeoff to maturity stage.
In the captioned presentation I have highlighted the fact that NTK was designed with resiliant features, especially AA-1 of NTK and also how the AA-1D was made LEED Traditional Neighborhood Design compliant more than 1/2 a decade before it was formalized by USGBC, NRF & CNU. I have highlighted the salient features namely
(1) hierarchy of built & open spaces; habitats starting from neighborhoods- community -Towns with distinct boundary have been planned; socio-economic infrastructure has been planned in early 2000 that even fulfill the changed requirements of NBC2005 and UDPFI 2015. ;
(2) Though the city has been planned for inclusion of all class, creed & castes of the society, AA-1D has been designed for a well-diversified population (housing option) such that the SIMPSON Diversity index > 0.75.
(3) The hierarchy of roads and surface drainage were designed in such a way that it's having an inversely proportional relationship.
All the above resilience features were designed and built in the early 2000, 1/2 decade before Draft LEED TND of USGBC was published after 2005.
The structure of AA1D was designed to be resilient as it was meant to promote (a) Compact densification; (b) Scaling of a Traditional neighbourhood; (c) Fine Grain diversity
I have also highlighted the fact that what we have done in (terms of TND design) more than 1.5 decades back in the year 2000-01, is being replicated now as a Brownfeild Retrofit by Global Smart City Barcelona through creation of SMART SUPER BLOCKS ( we were ahead of time).

Last year, Ericsson published a report, The Three Ages of Megacities that looked at how the maturity level of a city can help identify the most appropriate ICT solutions.
My presentation illustrates an on-going study in the field of Smart cities’ evaluation. The analysis starts from a revised notion of triple helix considering that Civil society plays a prominent role toward the realization of sustainable development in cities (Etzkowitz and Zhou, 2006).
In order to assess the connections between Smart city development and this institutionalization of the Triple Helix, an Analytic Network Process model has been developed. This interrelated model is used for investigating the relations between smart cities components (smart governance; smart economy; smart people; smart living; smart environment), actors (Universities, Government, Industry and Civil Society ) and policy visions derived from the “Urban Europe” Joint Programme Initiatives, i.e. strategies to which the smart cities are moving to (Connected City, Entrepreneurial City, Liveable City and Pioneer City).

The Networked Society City Index report continues to explore the correlation between cities’ ICT maturity and their triple bottom line development.
As with the previous studies, this index continues to show a strong correlation between ICT maturity of the city and their social, economic and environmental progress. In this report, New York City tops the overall ranking followed by Stockholm, London and Singapore.
The Networked Society City Index aims to develop a comprehensive evaluation of cities’ ICT maturity and their triple bottom line development. Through a series of reports we have analyzed 25 urban areas around the world from a city, citizen, and now, business perspective.
Patrik Regårdh from Ericsson’s Networked Society Lab says: "We see the individual – rather than city institutions or businesses – as the drivers of development resulting from ICT maturity. Governments follow by adapting to citizens’ changing behavior, while businesses primarily adopt ICT innovations to increase internal efficiency. More importantly, government decisions help steer the business sector’s ICT development. Therefore, changes in policy, regulation and planning, paired with research and support for taking risks and funding, are some of the key factors for driving progress. These factors are crucial in helping organizations of all sizes to connect, collaborate and compete more effectively."
OUR CITIES HOLD THE KEY TO
GLOBAL ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY.
They are the source of close to 80 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions, and depending on how we develop and manage our urban infrastructures during the next three decades, they could
become either a force for environmental destruction or a primary source of ecological rejuvenation.
To achieve the latter result, the US$350 trillion to be spent on urban infrastructure and usage over the next 30 years will have to be directed towards low to zero carbon emissions, partic-ularly in the world’s small but fastest-growing cities and developing nations, where the largest impacts can be made. There are three prerequisites for this effort:
• Cities must adopt aggressive energy reduction goals and best-practice approaches to urban planning.
• Innovative financing strategies are needed to provide $20 trillion to $30 trillion in funding for additional up-front capital costs, with developed nations working together to assist developing nations in their low-carbon
urban infrastructure initiatives.
• The latest technological advances must be utilized to support and enable the planning, construction, and usage of urban infrastructure in all cities.
If the will can be mustered to aggressively pursue urban sustainability, and these three prerequisites can be put into place, forward-thinking and aspiring urban leaders can generate urgently needed reductions in global emissions, produce attractive economic returns by transforming their cities into centres for ecological innovation, and enhance their energy security.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

5. FOREWORD Urbanization comes with proven benefits of economic growth and development.
Cities are centres of innovation in terms of ideas, knowledge, and their commer-
cialization. Consequently, cities serve as magnets for talent and human capital
seeking basic economic sustenance and fulfilment of dreams.
However, urbanization also comes with its social and environmental challenges.
Cities are characterized by strained infrastructure which manifests itself in terms
of power cuts and water shortages, high cost of living, and unaffordable real estate
resulting in urban sprawl and slums, high volume of traffic resulting in pollution
and delays.
India is at the cusp of a wave of urbanization. The sheer pace and scale of urban-
ization expected in the foreseeable future is unprecedented and will bring India to
the tipping point where majority of its population will reside in urban areas. This
presents both a challenge and an opportunity.
The challenge lies in our ability to cope. Our cities are already strained to meet the
demands of their residents. Incremental demands on our existing cities are likely
to degrade quality of life even further. Significant investments will be required to

environmental impact of doing so is likely to be significant.
However, if done right, India can walk the path of intelligent urbanization that not
only serves as a driver for growth but also is socially inclusive and environmen-
tally sustainable. For this to happen, India needs to base its tomorrow on fresh
thinking and original ideas provoked within a local context. The unprecedented
and unmatched urban growth that we are experiencing today demands a radical
and proactive response. This will necessitate a wide range of policies and practices
to be conceptualized around new ‘socially inclusive’ and ‘environment-friendly’
paradigms.
Technology has a role to play and the global community is waking up to it. CII in
collaboration with Cisco and Booz & Company as knowledge partners presents
a point of view on the integral role of technology in meeting India’s urbanization
goals. The report extensively covers issues pertaining to urbanization and sug-
gests a way forward with specific recommendations on the use of technology for

7. PREFACE The year 2010 marks a defining moment in human history when, for the first time
ever, more of mankind is urban than rural. In India, the urbanization process is
marching at an unprecedented pace creating a unique set of opportunities and
challenges that calls for a concerted societal response. Today alone, approximately
thousand Indians will migrate from India’s villages to its cities. As is true of
most of India’s opportunities and challenges it is not just the pace but the sheer
scale at which urbanization is manifesting itself that is staggering. It is encourag-
ing to note that there is an increasing acceptance and understanding of the many
ramifications of urbanization in India and the urgency of solutions entailed.
India is probably the only country which needs to not only revitalize some of the
densest urban agglomerations in the world but also ensure the delivery of basic
services to the lesser privileged in an efficient manner during this urban transfor-
mation. The opportunities and challenges are unique to India and therefore the
solutions must be transformational, not incremental.
Our solutions must embrace and address the imperatives of social equity and in-
clusive growth in a sustainable fashion. Our response needs to be well balanced.
The country requires a massive investment of over a trillion dollars from the gov-
ernment and corporate sector. There is great potential for technology to be the en-
gine that ensures the optimal use of these investments and there is an urgent need
for smart government regulations and strategic public–private partnerships.
Most importantly, our approach should be based on sustainability— social,
economic and environmental. We call this approach, Intelligent Urbanization—
enhancing the quality of life of citizens and ensuring social inclusion, boosting
economic growth and decreasing environmental impact.
During the course of developing this report, our colleagues at Booz & Company
have not only attempted to capture the unique features of Indian urbanization, but
also worked on a recommendation of specific solutions in the Indian context while
highlighting some of the success stories.
We have already made a beginning at trying to embrace these opportunities and
challenges. This is our chance to get this right by making our solutions scalable,
replicable, and sustainable. On behalf of the CII Steering Committee on Intelligent
