Portals are increasingly being used to deliver applications and information as services, rather than serving as the delivery mechanism themselves. Enterprise mashups that combine functionality from different systems are expected to be implemented in 50% of companies by 2011 to improve flexibility. Portals are also evolving to serve as social networking hubs and tools for end users to easily combine and customize applications. Presenters discussed the trend away from large, long-term projects towards more agile development of smaller, virtualized services and applications in a "everything-as-a-service" model enabled by cloud computing.
