Hardness is a material's resistance to penetration measured by pressing an indenter into the material's surface under a load. There is no absolute hardness standard, as values depend on the indenter shape and load used. Common hardness testing methods include Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers, and Mohs tests which indent the material to determine its resistance to plastic deformation.

made of the size or depth of the indentation.
