Hello USAG Red Cloud and Area I
Community Members!
Can you believe it we are nearing the end
of the year already; time flew by so fast, and
soon it will be Christmas and then New Years
Eve! It’s a very special time of the year to
spend with family and friends.
Unfortunately, this may not be the case
with some of our Area I members. As much
as it is a glorious time of the year, this season
can be a very difficult time for many of our
unaccompanied Soldiers and Families far from home. Please be vigilant
and watch for lonely and/or depressed symptoms, and reach out to your
Battle Buddies; invite them into your home or get them involved in Unit
or FMWR activities at the clubs, bowling centers, CACs or ACS. The Army
is one big family and we need to take care of our own, so open your
hearts and homes to your extended family here in Area I.
The stockings have been hung with care, the cookies have been baked
and frosted, the tree has been trimmed and the presents have been
wrapped. The only thing left is to wish you the merriest of Christmases
and the happiest of New Years from all of us! With that said, FMWR has a
lot going on in the month of December from Tree Lighting Ceremonies at
Camp Stanley, Camp Casey and Camp Red Cloud, a Unit Tree-Decorating
Contest, an Adopt-an-Orphan Program and even a Dinner with Santa
himself at Mitchell’s.
Check out the ITZ Magazine for more details, we have lots of Christmas
Specials and of course our New Year’s ‘out with the old, in with the new’
Celebrations welcoming 2015!
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a spectacular New Year… I
hope to see you out and about, be safe and until we meet again in 2015!

GATEWAY CLUB RENOVATION UPDATE
The Gateway Club earned a reputation throughout
the years as a popular hangout spot in Area 1. Given
the number of entertainment, activities and events
hosted since the facility was built; and evident of the
number of customers on any given Friday or Saturday
night, one wouldn’t find it hard to imagine why. “The
popularity of the Gateway Club might have something
to do with the fact that it’s the largest Family & MWR
club in Area 1, and quite convenient for the Casey
customer due to its close proximity to both the
Casey Main Road, the Main Gate and even the Casey
Bus Station,“ says Rene De Jesus, Acting Business
Operations Chief. Due to its ‘can’t miss’ location, the
facility tends to be a gathering point for Soldiers and
Families stationed at Camp Casey, a gateway of sorts
for people who are looking for a fun, club atmosphere;
or perhaps a convenient place for those who want to
grab a quick bite to eat, or a popular meeting spot for
family and friends.
So if you’ve passed by the Gateway Club recently
and seen the ongoing construction, don’t be alarmed;
the place isn’t being torn down for good----it’s in fact,
just the start of something new and something better
for our Area 1 customers. The club was temporarily
closed on September 2014 as part of a 6-month
renovation period that’s expected to conclude on
March 2015. A primary concern at the time was the
safety of both the club customers and their employees
who at one point or another, encountered ceiling
leaks, traces of molds, faulty alarm/power system,
broken doors and floor damages from decades of use.
Another aspect of the renovation was to address areas
and ways in which Family and MWR can positively
impact the club patrons’ experience. The result of
a thorough review led the renovation focus on both
ensuring the safety of the Gateway Club’s occupants
and providing a better, more visually appealing, fun
and exciting environment for future customers to
enjoy.
The Gateway Club is now 2-months into the
renovation project, and by all accounts it appears that
everything is on track for a Spring 2015 opening. The
construction is currently located outdoors so as to
take advantage of the good weather, and will move
indoors once the weather becomes colder. The plans
call for renovation of the bar, kitchen and dining area;
with some outdoor beautification, that will certainly
add and enhance the Gateway Club’s reputation in
years to come. That is all for now, this is your quick
monthly Gateway Club report, please stay tuned as
we update you on progress being made in the weeks
to come.
You can call Mr. DeJesus at 732-9187 or email at
rene.dejesus.naf@mail.mil for more information.

Unit Adopt-an-Orphan Christmas Program
Sharing the Warrior Country
Holiday Spirit this Christmas
Story by SGT. Micus Ralls
This holiday season is traditionally regarded
by both young and old alike, as a time for
giving, a festive time in which families and
friends get together and share the Christmas spirit. We,
along with our children normally associate this season
as a fun experience, the singing of carols, the sharing
of a sumptuous Christmas dinner and of course, the
exchanging of gifts among the ones we love.
This is the scenario being repeated in millions of
homes throughout the world...but unfortunately, not
everyone will get to experience Christmas the way we
do. Some families just do not have the means, and for
some children; well, some children just don’t have
any families to spend Christmas with, much less
anyone who can share the Christmas spirit with
them.
For those of us who’d like to help children like
these on Christmas, we have good news for you.
Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation (FMWR)
will host a Unit Adopt-an-Orphan Christmas
Program on December 13. “Area I Entertainment,
in collaboration with the Warrior’s Club and Area I
BOSS, have identified a Korean orphanage in which
we have the opportunity to enable local children
to experience Christmas just like the way we want
our children to,” says Mr. Chong Sang Sop, Area I
Entertainment Specialist. “This is a program that
allows Units to ‘adopt’ an orphan for a day, and take
them to the Warrior’s Club where a child will share

own way. The large facility was established in 1994, is
privately-owned and operated by a dedicated staff of 35
members and volunteers.
If you or your unit would like to ‘Adopt-an-Orphan’
this Christmas season, don’t hesitate to get involved.
Contact your local BOSS representative or SSG Jason
Knight at 010-2762-6278 for more information.
a Christmas meal with their sponsor Soldiers,” Mr.
Chong said with a smile.
This program is one of the oldest volunteer
programs on the peninsula, with the U.S. military
participating in some form or capacity since 1956
either at the Unit-level or sponsored by other
organizations such as Family & MWR, USO or by
the Red Cross. This year’s program will follow that
tradition of selfless-service, generosity and care.
“The program has been very popular in recent years,
we just have a lot of people in Warrior Country who
are altruistic, with a genuine desire to help others,”
said Staff Sergeant Jason Knight, Casey-Hovey BOSS
President. “We have a limited number of children
available for adoption so we ask Unit sponsors
to sign-up early to ensure their space before the
December 5 sign-up deadline,” he adds.
Prior to bringing these Korean children to Camp
Casey, all Soldiers/Families are given an opportunity
to visit their adopted children at the orphanage on
December 7. This is a great time to acquaint Unit
sponsors with their sponsored child/children,
enabling participants to get to know each other
before the event. During the Christmas program on
December 13, Units are required to provide a meal,
and a Christmas present for their adopted child.
Some children are mentally or physically
challenged. “These kids are special because they
are special needs kids and they require a little more
patience. And then there’s the language barrier,
so sponsor Units may have to bring a KATUSA
with them,” SGT Ardreanna Green, Stanley BOSS
President pointed out. In the past, Soldiers/Families
and organization members provided assistance to
the local orphanage by volunteering their time and
providing services and supplies. Even though the
official Adopt-an-Orphan program is for a few hours,
many Soldiers found the time they participated and
the subsequent times they spent volunteering at the
orphanage to be emotionally rewarding.
The Noah Rehabilitation Center (NRC) is located
15-20 minutes from Camp Casey, and is home to
over 65 school age special needs children. Some of
these children are active and ambulatory, and others
remain restricted to the confines of their mobility
device. No matter what their situation, all of them
are glowing with a great appreciation for life in their

LIGHTS
Sports Program
Let the Games Begin in Area I
Story by SGT. Micus Ralls
If you’re an avid sports practitioner, a budding sports athlete or simply an enthusiastic sports fan, you
certainly have something to look forward to in the next following months. Football, Basketball, Soccer,
Volleyball, Softball---these are just a few of the sporting events that are being promoted at several Area I
venues as part of the new “Friday & Saturday Lights Program.”
This Area I Army Sports-based program encourages fierce and
friendly competition between 12 battalions in Warrior Country. Both
Friday & Saturday Lights Program and the Battalion Sports Program
share a few similarities. "The Army Sports Program embodies key
elements of Comprehensive Soldier Fitness: building physical fitness,
strengthening resiliency, fostering teamwork, esprit de corps and
camaraderie; while ultimately offering Soldiers positive activities
Sports
22 USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
during discretionary times, thereby reducing Soldier opportunities to engage in high-risk activities," as
described by an operations order signed by Lieutenant General David Halverson, Commander of Installation
Management Command (IMCOM).
But here is where the two programs are unique. “The Friday & Saturday Lights Program was designed to
help meet the needs and requirements of mission commanders here in Area I,” says Colonel Jack Haefner,
U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I Commander. “Whereas, the Battalion Sports program only hosts
events annually or semi-annually with aims to highlight the best Soldier athletes in the Army, the Friday &
Saturday Lights Program will be held nearly every weekend within Area I, with a focus on providing Soldiers
different avenues for entertainment and stress relief, one in which tournament winners may continue to
compete in Army-level sports competitions,” he added.
The sports program already got off to a great start last month with Battalion-level football, and is currently
transitioning to volleyball and other indoor/outdoor sporting events. After the conclusion of fall and winter
football and volleyball games, there will be a transition into basketball, soccer and softball next year. If you
have (or think you have some game) in any of these sports, you’re highly encouraged to join and show your
Warrior Spirit by competing at the next tournament, or simply grab a few friends and show your support as
your battalion competes against other battalions within Area 1.
“The cornerstone of the Warrior Division is in our readiness and nothing breeds a Warrior mentality better
than competitive team sports. Having an outlet where our Soldiers can build teamwork, camaraderie and
engage in healthy competition is invaluable. The Friday & Saturday Lights Program improves the morale
of our Soldiers. It develops our Warrior Spirit physically and mentally,” says Major General Thomas Vandal,
Second Infantry Division Commander.
The Friday & Saturday Lights Program will consist of highly competitive battalion-level events that focus
on building resilience, enhancing unit cohesion and peer support. Championships will consist of 12 battalion
teams competing mostly on Fridays and sometimes on Saturdays depending on the schedule. Although
based on the Army’s Battalion Sports Program, the Friday and Saturday Lights Program was modified from
its predecessor in some very distinctive ways. Under the Army’s Unit Level Sports Program, most games are
conducted throughout the week, usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday night; but under this new program,
games, events and tournaments will be held on Friday or Saturday nights, beginning at 7 p.m.
Sports
IN THE ZONE 23
“Commanders have a directive to try and give Soldiers positive outcome venues within Area I. So we
strive to provide those alternatives to typical Friday or Saturday venues. Should I go get drunk downtown,
or is there a great activity or a game happening here on the Garrison that I can participate in?” says Colonel
Haefner.
Soldiers that are not competing in events are encouraged to show their support for their Units. “We have
concessions there, and we will have the sport itself. Units can do whatever they want to build on those,
perhaps even bring their own broadcasters in and add another fun element to the game. That is something
we definitely would like to see,” adds Haefner.
“It’s a great sports initiative, one in which we’re helping provide Soldiers an alternate activity to going
out to the Ville,” says Steven Toepper, Acting Chief, Family & MWR Community Recreation. “This sports
program is a fun, competitive event that could be held during off-duty hours while assisting Eighth Army
and 2ID in meeting a goal of trying to provide on-post activities for Soldiers on Fridays and Saturdays.”
Planning for such a large program takes a lot of coordination and effort on behalf of civilian staff,
commanders and their units. Preparations have been made through FMWR sports and club managers, DPW
helped prepare power and lighting for the venue, and even BOSS volunteers are pitching in to make this
program a success. “We were looking for an inexpensive way to provide something for the sports fans that
came to support their teams, so we gave it a little atmosphere: food, sports and perhaps a little music is
something that always goes well together,” Toepper added.
Transportation will be provided for team participants and their supportive spectators. Soldiers are
encouraged to participate or show their support to help boost morale, reinforce teamwork and solidify the
bonds within their ranks. Contact your Unit commanders for more info, or Jim Williams, Sports Program
Coordinator at 730-6682/010-2113-3552 for upcoming sports events.

For information about our magazine, call 732-9531. Hello USAG Red Cloud and Area I Community Members! Can you believe it we are nearing the end of the year already; time flew by so fast, and soon it will be Christmas and then New Years Eve! It’s a very special time of the year to spend with family and friends. Unfortunately, this may not be the case with some of our Area I members. As much as it is a glorious time of the year, this season can be a very difficult time for many of our unaccompanied Soldiers and Families far from home. Please be vigilant and watch for lonely and/or depressed symptoms, and reach out to your Battle Buddies; invite them into your home or get them involved in Unit or FMWR activities at the clubs, bowling centers, CACs or ACS. The Army is one big family and we need to take care of our own, so open your hearts and homes to your extended family here in Area I. The stockings have been hung with care, the cookies have been baked and frosted, the tree has been trimmed and the presents have been wrapped. The only thing left is to wish you the merriest of Christmases and the happiest of New Years from all of us! With that said, FMWR has a lot going on in the month of December from Tree Lighting Ceremonies at Camp Stanley, Camp Casey and Camp Red Cloud, a Unit Tree-Decorating Contest, an Adopt-an-Orphan Program and even a Dinner with Santa himself at Mitchell’s. Check out the ITZ Magazine for more details, we have lots of Christmas Specials and of course our New Year’s ‘out with the old, in with the new’ Celebrations welcoming 2015! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a spectacular New Year… I hope to see you out and about, be safe and until we meet again in 2015!

  • 12. GATEWAY CLUB RENOVATION UPDATE The Gateway Club earned a reputation throughout the years as a popular hangout spot in Area 1. Given the number of entertainment, activities and events hosted since the facility was built; and evident of the number of customers on any given Friday or Saturday night, one wouldn’t find it hard to imagine why. “The popularity of the Gateway Club might have something to do with the fact that it’s the largest Family & MWR club in Area 1, and quite convenient for the Casey customer due to its close proximity to both the Casey Main Road, the Main Gate and even the Casey Bus Station,“ says Rene De Jesus, Acting Business Operations Chief. Due to its ‘can’t miss’ location, the facility tends to be a gathering point for Soldiers and Families stationed at Camp Casey, a gateway of sorts for people who are looking for a fun, club atmosphere; or perhaps a convenient place for those who want to grab a quick bite to eat, or a popular meeting spot for family and friends. So if you’ve passed by the Gateway Club recently and seen the ongoing construction, don’t be alarmed; the place isn’t being torn down for good----it’s in fact, just the start of something new and something better for our Area 1 customers. The club was temporarily closed on September 2014 as part of a 6-month renovation period that’s expected to conclude on March 2015. A primary concern at the time was the safety of both the club customers and their employees who at one point or another, encountered ceiling leaks, traces of molds, faulty alarm/power system, broken doors and floor damages from decades of use. Another aspect of the renovation was to address areas and ways in which Family and MWR can positively impact the club patrons’ experience. The result of a thorough review led the renovation focus on both ensuring the safety of the Gateway Club’s occupants and providing a better, more visually appealing, fun and exciting environment for future customers to enjoy. The Gateway Club is now 2-months into the renovation project, and by all accounts it appears that everything is on track for a Spring 2015 opening. The construction is currently located outdoors so as to take advantage of the good weather, and will move indoors once the weather becomes colder. The plans call for renovation of the bar, kitchen and dining area; with some outdoor beautification, that will certainly add and enhance the Gateway Club’s reputation in years to come. That is all for now, this is your quick monthly Gateway Club report, please stay tuned as we update you on progress being made in the weeks to come. You can call Mr. DeJesus at 732-9187 or email at rene.dejesus.naf@mail.mil for more information. • 16. Unit Adopt-an-Orphan Christmas Program Sharing the Warrior Country Holiday Spirit this Christmas Story by SGT. Micus Ralls This holiday season is traditionally regarded by both young and old alike, as a time for giving, a festive time in which families and friends get together and share the Christmas spirit. We, along with our children normally associate this season as a fun experience, the singing of carols, the sharing of a sumptuous Christmas dinner and of course, the exchanging of gifts among the ones we love. This is the scenario being repeated in millions of homes throughout the world...but unfortunately, not everyone will get to experience Christmas the way we do. Some families just do not have the means, and for some children; well, some children just don’t have any families to spend Christmas with, much less anyone who can share the Christmas spirit with them. For those of us who’d like to help children like these on Christmas, we have good news for you. Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation (FMWR) will host a Unit Adopt-an-Orphan Christmas Program on December 13. “Area I Entertainment, in collaboration with the Warrior’s Club and Area I BOSS, have identified a Korean orphanage in which we have the opportunity to enable local children to experience Christmas just like the way we want our children to,” says Mr. Chong Sang Sop, Area I Entertainment Specialist. “This is a program that allows Units to ‘adopt’ an orphan for a day, and take them to the Warrior’s Club where a child will share Feature Article 16 USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

Contact your local BOSS representative or SSG Jason Knight at 010-2762-6278 for more information. a Christmas meal with their sponsor Soldiers,” Mr. Chong said with a smile. This program is one of the oldest volunteer programs on the peninsula, with the U.S. military participating in some form or capacity since 1956 either at the Unit-level or sponsored by other organizations such as Family & MWR, USO or by the Red Cross. This year’s program will follow that tradition of selfless-service, generosity and care. “The program has been very popular in recent years, we just have a lot of people in Warrior Country who are altruistic, with a genuine desire to help others,” said Staff Sergeant Jason Knight, Casey-Hovey BOSS President. “We have a limited number of children available for adoption so we ask Unit sponsors to sign-up early to ensure their space before the December 5 sign-up deadline,” he adds. Prior to bringing these Korean children to Camp Casey, all Soldiers/Families are given an opportunity to visit their adopted children at the orphanage on December 7. This is a great time to acquaint Unit sponsors with their sponsored child/children, enabling participants to get to know each other before the event. During the Christmas program on December 13, Units are required to provide a meal, and a Christmas present for their adopted child. Some children are mentally or physically challenged. “These kids are special because they are special needs kids and they require a little more patience. And then there’s the language barrier, so sponsor Units may have to bring a KATUSA with them,” SGT Ardreanna Green, Stanley BOSS President pointed out. In the past, Soldiers/Families and organization members provided assistance to the local orphanage by volunteering their time and providing services and supplies. Even though the official Adopt-an-Orphan program is for a few hours, many Soldiers found the time they participated and the subsequent times they spent volunteering at the orphanage to be emotionally rewarding. The Noah Rehabilitation Center (NRC) is located 15-20 minutes from Camp Casey, and is home to over 65 school age special needs children. Some of these children are active and ambulatory, and others remain restricted to the confines of their mobility device. No matter what their situation, all of them are glowing with a great appreciation for life in their Feature Article IN THE ZONE 17

Both Friday & Saturday Lights Program and the Battalion Sports Program share a few similarities. "The Army Sports Program embodies key elements of Comprehensive Soldier Fitness: building physical fitness, strengthening resiliency, fostering teamwork, esprit de corps and camaraderie; while ultimately offering Soldiers positive activities Sports 22 USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
  • 23. during discretionary times, thereby reducing Soldier opportunities to engage in high-risk activities," as described by an operations order signed by Lieutenant General David Halverson, Commander of Installation Management Command (IMCOM). But here is where the two programs are unique. “The Friday & Saturday Lights Program was designed to help meet the needs and requirements of mission commanders here in Area I,” says Colonel Jack Haefner, U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I Commander. “Whereas, the Battalion Sports program only hosts events annually or semi-annually with aims to highlight the best Soldier athletes in the Army, the Friday & Saturday Lights Program will be held nearly every weekend within Area I, with a focus on providing Soldiers different avenues for entertainment and stress relief, one in which tournament winners may continue to compete in Army-level sports competitions,” he added. The sports program already got off to a great start last month with Battalion-level football, and is currently transitioning to volleyball and other indoor/outdoor sporting events. After the conclusion of fall and winter football and volleyball games, there will be a transition into basketball, soccer and softball next year. If you have (or think you have some game) in any of these sports, you’re highly encouraged to join and show your Warrior Spirit by competing at the next tournament, or simply grab a few friends and show your support as your battalion competes against other battalions within Area 1. “The cornerstone of the Warrior Division is in our readiness and nothing breeds a Warrior mentality better than competitive team sports. Having an outlet where our Soldiers can build teamwork, camaraderie and engage in healthy competition is invaluable. The Friday & Saturday Lights Program improves the morale of our Soldiers. It develops our Warrior Spirit physically and mentally,” says Major General Thomas Vandal, Second Infantry Division Commander. The Friday & Saturday Lights Program will consist of highly competitive battalion-level events that focus on building resilience, enhancing unit cohesion and peer support. Championships will consist of 12 battalion teams competing mostly on Fridays and sometimes on Saturdays depending on the schedule. Although based on the Army’s Battalion Sports Program, the Friday and Saturday Lights Program was modified from its predecessor in some very distinctive ways. Under the Army’s Unit Level Sports Program, most games are conducted throughout the week, usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday night; but under this new program, games, events and tournaments will be held on Friday or Saturday nights, beginning at 7 p.m. Sports IN THE ZONE 23
  • 24. “Commanders have a directive to try and give Soldiers positive outcome venues within Area I. So we strive to provide those alternatives to typical Friday or Saturday venues. Should I go get drunk downtown, or is there a great activity or a game happening here on the Garrison that I can participate in?” says Colonel Haefner. Soldiers that are not competing in events are encouraged to show their support for their Units. “We have concessions there, and we will have the sport itself. Units can do whatever they want to build on those, perhaps even bring their own broadcasters in and add another fun element to the game. That is something we definitely would like to see,” adds Haefner. “It’s a great sports initiative, one in which we’re helping provide Soldiers an alternate activity to going out to the Ville,” says Steven Toepper, Acting Chief, Family & MWR Community Recreation. “This sports program is a fun, competitive event that could be held during off-duty hours while assisting Eighth Army and 2ID in meeting a goal of trying to provide on-post activities for Soldiers on Fridays and Saturdays.” Planning for such a large program takes a lot of coordination and effort on behalf of civilian staff, commanders and their units. Preparations have been made through FMWR sports and club managers, DPW helped prepare power and lighting for the venue, and even BOSS volunteers are pitching in to make this program a success. “We were looking for an inexpensive way to provide something for the sports fans that came to support their teams, so we gave it a little atmosphere: food, sports and perhaps a little music is something that always goes well together,” Toepper added. Transportation will be provided for team participants and their supportive spectators. Soldiers are encouraged to participate or show their support to help boost morale, reinforce teamwork and solidify the bonds within their ranks. Contact your Unit commanders for more info, or Jim Williams, Sports Program Coordinator at 730-6682/010-2113-3552 for upcoming sports events.
