W
HEN you
think about
Mixed Mar-
tial Arts
fighting, or MMA, the first
things that come to mind for
novice spectators are images
of cage fighting, violence
and danger.
However, like all sports,
MMA has its fair share of
risks, but not more or less
than other contact sports,
which require almost the
same amount of training
and discipline.
Sharing further insight
with the Sunday Tribune
this week, is 14-time MMA
winner and two-time Kwa-
Zulu-Natal MMA title holder,
Baldwin Mdlalose.
Mdlalose started MMA
fighting in 2010, when his
friend insisted he watch a
live fight, or two, and then
maybe even “try it”. That
was when Mdlalose first saw
Pro MMA Fighter Donavin
Hawkey in the ring and
realised he (Mdlalose) “real-
ly enjoyed” the experience.
This was also when
Mdlalose’s journey with the
MMA style began, encom-
passing boxing, Muay Thai,
wrestling, Brazilian Ju Jitsu,
as well as strength training
his body.
“I wasn’t keen at first, as
fighting wasn’t my thing. I
was into soccer and rugby,
but things changed and I
never thought I would be
fighting. I’m enjoying it,”
said Mdlalose.
He started amateur train-
ing with prominent fighters
Donavin and Wesley Hawkey
a few years ago, then won the
KZN and AFL tournaments
in 2011 and 2012. Today,
Mdlalose trains six days a
week with a special diet to
keep in shape and remain at
the top of his game. He has
been a part-time student
since 2014, learning the fit-
ting and turning trade.
Previously he sustained
a few injuries, but nothing
has deterred this 28-year-old
from aiming to be the next
Extreme Fighting Cham-
pionship, Flyweight Cham-
pion.
“Yeah! I’ve pulled liga-
ments on my ankle and arm
and had bruised ribs, but I
have an amazing chiroprac-
tor, Dr Lubbe. She’s been a
great help over the years,
keeping me healthy and
making sure I’m able to train
and fight,” he said.
Recalling his first fight,
Mdlalose laughed as he re-
flected on his fear, anxiety
and choice of sport, feeling
overwhelmed by what was to
come. Soon enough, with
training and several wins, he
noticed that with time it got
easier. Since “jumping to
pro” in 2013, he also signed
up with EFC Worldwide.
“I remember my first
fight. I kept asking myself
what I was doing here, be-
cause I was scared, and had
the feeling of butterflies in
my stomach. I still get them
now, but the only difference
is it’s on a bigger stage. It’s
more like I’m pumped to get
in there. So I still get nerv-
ous, but it’s a good nervous
that keeps you sharp, alert
and focused at all times. If I
didn’t get them, I wouldn’t
fight,” said Mdlalose.
He added that “being a
black fighter had its chal-
lenges, but with a good sup-
port system in place, you
could overcome anything”.
“I’m blessed to have a
great support system and
people look up to you, so
yeah, it’s rewarding… My
mentor is my coach, Clint
“Grizzly” Walters. He helped
me understand the game
better, and life in general.
We share the same passion
and believe we can achieve
great things together,” he
said.
He also said what most
people did not understand
was “the discipline and work
ethic involved, also the
friendships”, because he has
met and trained with some
of the “nicest, humble guys
you’ll ever meet”.
In fact, his long-time
mates and fellow fighters
recently made light of the
fact that Mdlalose did not
have an official fighter nick-
name. Somehow, in the
process of creating one, they
found a humorous and play-
ful suggestion, that Mdlalose
thinks is hilarious!
“I don’t have a nickname
like the other fighters, but
sometimes my friends call
me Blackie Chan. It’s funny
and we laugh about it all the
time. One day we were train-
ing and creating some new
moves, when I did something
different, something I am
going to use in my next fight.
They said the move was like
Jackie Chan (the martial
arts movie star) and then
jokingly called me Blackie
Chan,” he laughs.
As he has one good expe-
rience after another in the
sport, Mdlalose encouraged
the youth to do MMA Fight-
ing for the “right reason”,
and to surround yourself
with people who had your
best interests at heart.

Why beating the Poms matters
WITH each Fiji kick that strayed wide
of the posts on Friday night, there
was a collective sigh of disappoint-
ment from the ABE brigade. That is,
Anyone But England. It is a growing
throng, fuelled by the Poms’ uncanny
ability to rub people up the wrong
way.
Even before the tournament had
started, the hosts had already caused
a stir, when former World Cup winner
Matt Dawson decided to insult the All
Blacks. That, on its own, is a bizarre
decision, considering that the defend-
ing champions don’t need any extra
motivation as it is.
But, Dawson and a few marketing
geniuses decided that the haka needed
a make-over. The so-called ‘Hakarena’,
all skinny legs and bad choreography,
was apparently supposed to be light-
hearted, but it came across as just
plain disrespectful.
Like it or not, the haka is sacred to
the New Zealanders, a mark of respect
to their storied history and land. To
belittle it, even in jest, is totally unnec-
essary. It probably explains why Ali
Williams, the former All Black lock,
was moved to say that England was
the team that he enjoyed beating the
most. More, even, than the Boks.
He even said that Twickenham had
an atmosphere that was more inhos-
pitable than Loftus, which really is
saying something. The Pretoria
fortress, when it is heaving and host-
ing an arch enemy, is even intimida-
ting to some home fans, because the
die-hards make you question your
own level of loyalty.
And yet Williams still found it a
kinder place than ‘Twickers’. It is
hard to fathom just why England have
come to have that effect, but they
somehow do. As hosts, they are ex-
cellent; the grounds are always in
fantastic nick, and the entire country
throws their weight behind the
tournament.
And yet, after a slick opening cere-
mony, every neutral in world rugby
was hoping for an upset by Fiji on first
night. As it was, the Poms cruised to
a bonus-point victory. Hope springs
eternal for another World Cup tri-
umph to add to the class of 2003, but
this 2015 edition is very young.
For starters, the Poms next face the
Welsh, in what is sure to be an electric
atmosphere. And Wales, even if they
will be a Halfpenny short of testing
the full strength of the pound, are
one of those teams who love pooping
the party at Twickers.
Theirs is not called the Group of
Death for nothing, and even if they do
get through, somebody will have to
then take on the Boks in a quarter-
final. Though England eventually
cruised to a 35-11 win on Friday, much
of their rugby for the first hour
held no gremlins, even for Heyneke
Meyer’s conservative game plan.
And, having been labelled as ‘fat-
headed’ by the charming English
media, the Boks wouldn’t even need a
pep-talk from the coach. After all, the
English are still grumbling about
what happened in that 2007 final,
when Mark Cueto dipped a toe on the
whitewash, as he stretched for the
corner.
It’s small things like that, which
the rest of the world has moved on
from, that ensure that the English are
always the team that everyone else
wants to beat. Dawson, and the rest of
his Hakarena poofs, may have got
their chuckle in early, but few will be
backing them to still be laughing
come the end of October.
Anyone But England…
MATT DAWSON
The pipes, the pipes are ...now banned!
REUTERS in London
SCOTLAND’S rugby stars say they
will miss hearing the inspirational
skirl of the bagpipes during the World
Cup after organisers banned musical
instruments inside stadiums.
Hooker Ross Ford called on organ-
isers to exert some “common sense”.
“It’s our national instrument and
our national sound. I think there has
to be some form of common sense in
play here. It’s not a massive issue – it’s
bagpipes,” said Ford. “It’s great to
hear them at matches. When you are
warming up and you hear them, it’s a
big boost to the players.”
Organisers also banned large flags,
oversized hats and other noisemakers
such as the vuvuzelas – the plastic
horn so prominent during South
Africa’s football World Cup in 2010.
