Poliomyelitis, also known as polio, is a highly infectious viral disease that mostly affects children under 5 years old. The poliovirus is transmitted through the fecal-oral route or less frequently through contaminated water or food. It is a member of the enteroviruses that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. The incubation period is typically 6 to 20 days. Diagnosis involves isolating the polio virus from stool specimens, with the highest likelihood of isolation occurring early within the first two weeks of symptoms. There is no cure for polio, making prevention through vaccination the most effective approach to control the disease.
