Let’s Predict the Future: F1 Conclusions
This document summarizes conclusions from a workshop on predicting the future and discusses several reports on emerging trends. Status of accountability in online news media: A case of Nepal

Adam first explained that the opportunities for Studiosity data also expanded with the services' move to 24/7. Adam also reminded us that data is only as good as the action it informs, and that Studiosity student data helps improve student engagement in other ways across the university, too. Drawing on examples of industries outside the education sector, the point was clear - do something with your data.

Jhpiego is an international health organization that works to strengthen healthcare in limited-resource settings. They conducted a project to develop and implement electronic training materials for HIV care, treatment and prevention across three universities in Ethiopia. An assessment found large variation in technology readiness across sites. Recommendations included strengthening IT staff competencies, developing exemplar e-learning materials, and maximizing the use of mobile learning. Immediate solutions included setting up an e-learning lab and distributed learning management system. Next steps involve expanding implementations and integrating mobile learning technologies. Lessons learned stress understanding limitations, leveraging local expertise, and maintaining stakeholder engagement.

Conducting Research on Blended and Online Education: A Research Toolkit
An ELI Short Course delivered on May 16th, 2016.
This session consists of practice-based research planning activities to help participants prepare for conducting research at the course or program level. Specifically, we will utilize the distance education research toolkit developed by the National Research Center for Distance Education and Technological Advancements (DETA) to guide the development of research plans for blended and online learning. Attendees will walk away with a research agenda and the necessary tools to help them conduct research on their campus as part of the National DETA Research Center initiative. The DETA Center seeks to identify and evaluate effective course and institutional practices in online learning (including competency-based education) for underrepresented learners.

DE Board Presentation
Distance Education at College of the Redwoods has seen steady growth over the past few years. Support structures for online students include online tutorials, a support ticketing system, and phone/email assistance from the DE support team. The college also partners with local organizations to enhance IT services for students. Grants have supported expanding career technical education and analytics courses online. Tools like the learning management system and proctoring software help enable quality online instruction. Going forward, the college aims to increase faculty collaboration, expand advising, and leverage technologies to lower costs while enhancing flexibility.

These slides represent part 1 of a 2 part co-presentation with NeuroDevNet NCE's KT Core. ABSTRACT
IT system development, integration, deployment, and
administration benefit significantly from free and open source
software (FOSS) tools and services. Affordability has been a
compelling reason for adopting FOSS in computing curricula and
equipping computing labs with support infrastructure. Using
FOSS systems and services, however, is just the first step in
taking advantage of how FOSS development principles and
practices can impact student learning in IT degree programs.
Above all, FOSS development of IT systems requires changes to
how students, instructors, and other contributors work
collaboratively and openly and get involved and invested in
project activities.
In this paper I examine the challenges to engage students in FOSS
development projects proposed by real clients. A six-week course
project revealed problems with adopting FOSS development and
collaboration across different activities and roles that student team
members have assumed. Despite these problems, students have
showed a genuine and strong interest in gaining more practice
with FOSS development. FOSS development teaching was further
refined in two other courses to learn about adequate teaching
strategies and the competencies that students achieve when they
participate in FOSS development of IT systems.

1. BACKGROUND
The Computer Information Systems (CIS) program at University
of New Hampshire in Manchester (UNHM) has built partnerships
with local nonprofits, state agencies, small businesses, and in-
house research projects to enrich curricula with authentic work
experiences and benefit community with IT solutions. In this
curricular model, 98 students worked in 26 teams on projects
proposed by eight organizations and one research faculty during
2007 to 2010 time period. Most of the projects evolved over
multiple semesters as course projects in databases, web systems,
and software engineering courses. Three projects were conducted
in internship, independent study, and summer research courses by
individual students. Only these projects have produced prototypes
that could be transferred for deployment at partnering
organizations. Two of these three projects have been adopted and
are in use at sponsoring organizations, Salvation Army in
Manchester and the Division for Juvenile Justice Services.
