 The voice or perspective that the story is being
told from
 Narrator – the one telling the story. The reader
shares this person’s view.
 Character in the story is the narrator. We only
know what this person thinks, feels, and
chooses to tell us.
“I walked into the ball. I could feel all of the
people looking at me. I looked for the
prince.”
 Told by an outside narrator who is not a
character in the story. Narrator zooms in on
one character. We only know the thoughts
and feelings of this character.
“Cinderella walked into the ball. She was so
nervous. She hoped the prince would notice
her.”
 Told by an outside narrator who is not a
character in the story. Narrator is “all
knowing”. We know the thoughts and
feelings of all of the characters.
“Cinderella felt so nervous. She knew that all
eyes were on her. The prince felt his heart
jump in his throat. He had never seen anyone
so beautiful. “
 Point of view makes ALL
the difference in a story!
 We will usually come
closer to agreeing with a
person if we see that
person’s side to the story,
but every story has
another side.
 Think of the story of “The
Three Bears.” How would
that story be different if
you had Father Bear’s 1st
person point of view?
What if you had a third
person omniscient point
of view?
