Common Core Learning Standards: Literature

Craft and Structure
   •   RL.7.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including
       figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions
       of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story
       or drama.
   •   RL.7.5.. Analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure (e.g., soliloquy, sonnet)
       contributes to its meaning.
   •   RL.7.6. Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different
       characters or narrators in a text.

Rationale: This lesson is designed to increase the student’s knowledge of the elements of
poetry. Through the completion of these activities students will have a better understanding of
the literary devices used to create poetry, famous poets and poems, and the various styles of
poetry.

Objectives:
What the Teacher Will Do: The teacher will introduce the concept of poetry to the students by
having the class create a KWL chart on poetry. Once the chart is completed, the teacher will
then begin by introducing the different poetry elements to the students. The teacher will write
each element on the board and explain the characteristics of each to students. Next, the teacher
will read a sample of each type of element and have students try to identify which poem goes
with each element that is on the board. Finally, the teacher will engage students in a Smartboard
activity where they must take lines from different poems and try to correctly identify what type
of element each line represents by placing it under the right column on the a game board.

What the Students Will Do: After participating in the teacher guided whole class introduction
activity, the students will work in pairs to complete an online poetry scavenger hunt. The
students will have to answer questions related to poetry using the computer. Links will be
provided for additional assistance if needed. (Here is a sample of what the scavenger hunt would

Resources: computer, poetry scavenger hunt worksheet, KWL chart, Smartboard

Assessment: The scavenger hunt will be handed in and counted as a class work grade.

Supplemental Activity: Students can go to the school library and try to find one example of
each poetry element.

Poetry scavenger hunt

  • 1. Title: Poetry Scavenger Hunt Teacher: Ms. Winfield Grade: 6/7 Common Core Learning Standards: Literature Craft and Structure • RL.7.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story or drama. • RL.7.5.. Analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure (e.g., soliloquy, sonnet) contributes to its meaning. • RL.7.6. Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text. Rationale: This lesson is designed to increase the student’s knowledge of the elements of poetry. Through the completion of these activities students will have a better understanding of the literary devices used to create poetry, famous poets and poems, and the various styles of poetry. Objectives: What the Teacher Will Do: The teacher will introduce the concept of poetry to the students by having the class create a KWL chart on poetry. Once the chart is completed, the teacher will then begin by introducing the different poetry elements to the students. The teacher will write each element on the board and explain the characteristics of each to students. Next, the teacher will read a sample of each type of element and have students try to identify which poem goes with each element that is on the board. Finally, the teacher will engage students in a Smartboard activity where they must take lines from different poems and try to correctly identify what type of element each line represents by placing it under the right column on the a game board. What the Students Will Do: After participating in the teacher guided whole class introduction activity, the students will work in pairs to complete an online poetry scavenger hunt. The students will have to answer questions related to poetry using the computer. Links will be provided for additional assistance if needed. (Here is a sample of what the scavenger hunt would look like: http://www.zunal.com/process.php?w=93184) Resources: computer, poetry scavenger hunt worksheet, KWL chart, Smartboard Assessment: The scavenger hunt will be handed in and counted as a class work grade. Supplemental Activity: Students can go to the school library and try to find one example of each poetry element.
