Narayan earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Mysore and began his career as a teacher before dedicating himself to writing. Some of his most famous works include Swami and Friends (1935), The Guide (1959), and The Vendor of Sweets (1967). Narayan's stories were set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi and portrayed everyday life and the clash between modern and traditional aspects of Indian society.
