Making a Podcast
Types of podcasts:
 Weekly classroom news broadcast
 Document a field trip
 Record a class discussion
 Share book reviews
 Conduct interviews
 Review curricular content
 Student created podcast episode
Here are popular ways to use podcasts in your
lesson plans:
 Audio Tours: Students record school tours, acting as the tour guide so newcomers can explore the school through the
eyes of a peer.
 Celebrate Culture: Students podcast about important cultural events and share these with parents, the school, or the
community around them.
 Current Events Newscasts: Students deliver weekly or monthly podcasts on interesting current events.
 Debates: Hold a class debate. Record it in audio and have other students listen and weigh in.
 Guest speakers: Make podcasts of class guest speakers to share with absent students or future classes. This can be
stored in the podcast library (mentioned below).
 Interviews: Have students interview each other as well as teachers and administrators about important school-wide
events such as a sports competition or an award ceremony.
 Musical Podcasts: Have band or orchestra students create podcasts for each instrument, detailing its specific sounds and
characteristics.
 Podcast Library: Curate the varied student-created podcasts into a library of podcasts for present and future students.
 Publish Presentations: Instead of writing a book report or acting out a play, students record the presentation as a
podcast, using only their voice to communicate ideas and build excitement.
 Radio Show: Students make short radio broadcasts summarizing the books they are reading.
 Roving Reporters: Send students out into the “Field” (read that: the school campus) to interview key players in important
events.

Editor's Notes

  1. Over the next 45 min we will be: reviewing what is podcasting, how can it be used in the ESL classroom. What benefits are there? And finally, we will record a short episode together. Throughout the session there will be questions posted and time for you to chat with your neighbor, ok.
  2. Go to Google play or itunes to download the app – ANCHORFM. It is free. We will be using this later in the presentation when we actually create our own podcast together. So sometime in the next 20min or so, download this app – of course you can just watch if you would rather not download. Any podcast NEWBEES in the room? Ok, this next slide is for you.
  3. less privacy issues. No need to comb your hair. less intimidating. has a presentation element. is about sharing. can be private to invited guests. full story not needed each time. can be a segment. music usually included some where, anyone in the class a musician? Can teach about copyright repeat and imitate dialogue. easy to study. niche. find something different and interesting. more to look through. harder to find quality. Can be recorded with a smart phone and uploaded directly by phone. Free platforms available. CLICK on stats page – just go through the first few facts.
  4. Link to Burst and Bloom Podcast. Explain how this is my podcast. What it is about and how it started. What format I am using. Shoe string budget, no planning, learning as I go along. Vs. Feist’s podcast – lots of $$$ available. Professional production with a team of editors etc. Paid to make and plan this podcast.
  5. Because of the casual tone of podcasts, the contemporary topics, or both, students have the feeling of participating in a conversation rather than having adults reading or talking at them. Students feel like they’re doing something special, new, and fresh — which is inherently exciting.
  6. Bloom’s taxonomy – this diagram does a great job of explaining the benefits and uses of Podcasting in the classroom. (read boxes beside triangle. Ask the group about ‘apply’ If Create is to create your own podcast, how could you use apply in the classroom?
  7. I didn’t ask them to find ESL websites, although some only pointed to ESL podcasts. I only asked a handful of students – but you could work with your whole class.
  8. FIND OUT the interests of your students: Hobbies, passions, businesses, curiosity, connection PODCAST choice doesn’t have to be ESL learning! They will tell you which podcasts they like and prefer. Assign them this research at the beginning of the semester and see what they come up with. I asked my students a list of questions. Learn how to research and expose them on different categories that are possible.
