Week 3: Conflict Theories
Imagine living your life without any problems to solve or obstacles to overcome. What if everyone you encounter held the same beliefs and opinions that you do? How would you continue to learn and mature, without the lessons provided through conflict? Because conflict and adversity are nearly unavoidable, the social worker’s focus often is on helping clients resolve and learn from conflict, in order to continue the progress toward their goals. An understanding of the theories about why conflict exists and how it functions in people’s lives provides the foundation from which social workers can best assist clients in coping with and resolving the conflicts they face.
This week, you evaluate the appropriateness of conflict theories for specific populations and compare their application to social work practice.

· Have the Personal Responsibility and Critical Thinking Rubrics open in front of you. Your grade will be assessed according to these two rubrics. Scroll down for these rubrics.
· Some questions to ask yourself as you are brainstorming: What does "putting yourself first" mean as you see it? What are the consequences of living this way? How would you describe the opposite of "putting yourself first"? If you had to choose between them, which way of life is better? Do you have to choose between them? If you disagree with your friend who thinks life is about putting oneself first as much as possible whenever possible, how would you persuade your friend that life is not a selfish or self-indulgent pursuit? How do you justify that your own actions are altruistic, and to what end do you pursue acts in the interest of others? Do you do so with the same passion as you do endeavors that fulfill a want or a need in your own life? Once you have entertained the above questions, carve out a thesis statement that states clearly whether or not "put yourself first" is a good approach to life and why.

· When writing this essay, you are not required to discuss the theories of meaning from Chapter 2 unless you find them relevant to "put yourself first". Focus the entirety of your essay on "put yourself first" and direct alternatives to this way of life as you draw upon the "big picture" from Chapter 2, that is the consequences of having a theory of meaning at all.

For our purposes, we will add the notion that some cultures are our born of tension (social or otherwise) and grow in response to other, perhaps dominant, cultures. If this is the case for your subject, your culture of exploration, you must explore this relationship.
Regardless of what culture you choose, focus, define and expose its inner-workings and explain what makes this so unique… to you and potentially to others. In other words, whether you’re writing about something intellectual, political, religious, fun or something practical like food, dismantle it as a culture.
As you explore your topic, reach for argumentation. That is, include in your discussion relevant ideas about culture (how we think, act, and behave during our daily lives) and history as they are connected to your subject. Your argumentative stance pertaining to the ways your topic affects us as real human beings should also be included. Ultimately, explain why your point of view deserves our attention… what makes your thesis and point of view significant?
Organizationally, you might start with an experience that helps frame your subject.
Stylistically, you should be authoritative, addressing the issue as someone who should be listened to; but be careful not to allow personal biases or emotions to control the tone of your essay.
The essay should be no less than 4 pages, typed, double-spaced with normal page margins, 12 pt. font. No research sources are required, but you will likely do research. If so, your sources MUST BE CITED using MLA Format.

You will revisit the social change initiative that you discuss in this milestone assignment as you complete Project One.PromptFor this activity, you will first research and review five scholarly resources that include varying definitions of social change identity. In an annotated bibliography format, you will summarize and cite the definitions of social change identity from each resource, then respond to the following criteria:Record and cite five scholarly resources that include varying definitions of social change identity.Identify three themes that emerged from the researched definitions.Describe which of the three themes you feel has the greatest personal significance to you and why.Describe which of the three themes you believe has the greatest societal significance and why.Note: In your research, you may find it challenging to locate resources that explicitly include the phrase “social change identity”.
