A new PS3 jailbreak dongle was released, enabling users to backup games and play them without updating firmware. However, Sony quickly responded by blocking unauthorized USB devices with firmware 3.56. This stopped the dongle from working on newer systems. Another jailbreak was released on New Year's Eve 2011 using Sony's mistake in public key generation. This allowed homebrew and PSN access until cheating online led to tighter security and the temporary shutdown of PSN in 2011. The scene has continued with other dongles and jailbreaks aiming to retain game backups and PSN access.
