The Three Categories of Orchestral Instruments
The orchestra is a large, organized group of musicians who perform a broad variety of
musical works, such as symphonies, concertos, or more recently, soundtracks. For someone who
is not well acquainted with orchestral instruments, it can be confusing to attend an orchestra
concert and see so many musicians playing on various instruments across the stage. Paul
Mathews, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Johns Hopkins’ Peabody Conservatory, writes
that the orchestra can be viewed as a “human organism,” so that “the strings form the nervous
system…the brass and woodwind form the blood system under its double classification of
arteries and veins, and finally the percussion instruments form the lymphatic system” (93). Of
the several ways orchestral instruments could be classified, arguably the clearest divisions fall
into three groups by evaluation of melodic importance and instrumental similarity: strings, brass
and woodwinds, and percussion.
Stringed instruments form the largest and most important instrument group within the
orchestra—“more than half,” according to David Ewen (381). The string sections are truly the
core of the orchestra and tend to carry the melodic line most frequently. In fact, some musical
pieces are written only for string orchestra, meaning only these instruments are used. A viewer
will recognize them surrounding the conductor in a semi-circle arrangement on stage, including
violins, violas, cellos, double basses, and harps. All of these instruments possess fine strings
stretched over or across wood to create sound, giving them a striking similarity to the range and

The Three Categories of Orchestral Instruments
The orchestra is a large, organized group of musicians who perform a broad variety of
musical works, such as symphonies, concertos, or more recently, soundtracks. For someone who
is not well acquainted with orchestral instruments, it can be confusing to attend an orchestra
concert and see so many musicians playing on various instruments across the stage. Paul
Mathews, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Johns Hopkins’ Peabody Conservatory, writes
that the orchestra can be viewed as a “human organism,” so that “the strings form the nervous
system…the brass and woodwind form the blood system under its double classification of
arteries and veins, and finally the percussion instruments form the lymphatic system” (93). Of
the several ways orchestral instruments could be classified, arguably the clearest divisions fall
into three groups by evaluation of melodic importance and instrumental similarity: strings, brass
and woodwinds, and percussion.
Stringed instruments form the largest and most important instrument group within the
orchestra—“more than half,” according to David Ewen (381). The string sections are truly the
core of the orchestra and tend to carry the melodic line most frequently. In fact, some musical
pieces are written only for string orchestra, meaning only these instruments are used. A viewer
will recognize them surrounding the conductor in a semi-circle arrangement on stage, including
violins, violas, cellos, double basses, and harps. All of these instruments possess fine strings
stretched over or across wood to create sound, giving them a striking similarity to the range and

Every nation has had its share of history that the people are not proud of. Slavery was abolished over 100 years ago. At the time of the trade it was very profitable for the traders and for plantation owners. The American Civil War was partially caused by slavery, as the war ended slavery was abolished by the United States Congress on December 6, 1865. In “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” Augustine St. Clare believed that slavery is worse for the master because it had a negative impact on them. There were some slave owners that actually took care of their slaves but the human factor played in their minds. For the money and profits the master were pro slavery but for the inhumane treatment some were not too comfortable with it. There was a concept of the slaves being better off with the masters, this concept was made after slavery was abolished. After the passing of the 13

Amendment the Emancipation Proclamation came about which allowed slaves to be paid for their work. Many believed the slaves should have stayed with the master because most of them were uneducated, didn’t know what to do with money, starting a life would have been difficult. Some former slaves stayed on plantations and worked in exchange for food and clothes.

Linda Brent faced issues concerning her children and being sold off to other slave owners. As Linda Brent gained freedom she faced the unknown of being in the world with her children. The women in the North did not understand the brutality for women in the South especially slaves, women in the South constantly faced sexual abuse. Girls were forced to commit sexual acts and becoming pregnant as a result of the abuse. The physical abuse was sometimes unbearable for Dr. Flint “When Dr. Flint learned that I was again to be a mother, he was exasperated beyond measure. He rushed from the house, and returned with a pair of shears. I had a fine head of hair; and he often railed about my pride of arranging it nicely. He cut every hair close to my head, storming and swearing all the time. I replied to some of his abuse, and he struck me. Some months before, he had pitched me down stairs in a fit of passion; and the injury I received was so serious that I was unable to turn myself in bed for many days. He then said, "Linda, I swear by God I will never raise my hand against you again;" but I knew that he would forget his promise.” Linda and the rest of the slave girls showed strength in order to survive.

as she grew older she became anxious about dating, having kids and getting married so she dedicated herself to her job
Bess would sometimes feel contaminated so she went through the routine of laying her clothes down on specific parts of the bed then taking a shower using several different washcloths
she would do this 4 or 5 times a day until she felt the contamination was gone
when Bess could no longer do her job anymore (the only thing in life that satisfied her) she began to see a therapist
she went to a cognitive behavioral therapist
he had her raise her hand when she felt obsessed and he would yell stop
later he gave her a small box that she could use to slightly shock her when she had an obsession or compulsion and she would yell stop
eventually Bess learned she could control her thoughts and began to think more positively than negatively

Data collection is an important part of both quantitative and qualitative research. Although the actual approach to gathering information may vary, for either research design, researchers need to plan in advance how the data will be gathered, reported, and stored, and they need to ensure that their methods are both reliable and valid. As nurses review research when considering a new evidence-based practice, it is important to be familiar with sound collection practices in order to ascertain the credibility of the data presented.
Consider the following scenario:
Nurses and other health care professionals are often interested in assessing patient satisfaction with health care services. Imagine that you are a nurse working in a suburban primary care setting that serves 10,000 patients annually. Your organization is very interested in understanding the patient’s point of view to help determine areas of care that can be improved. With this focus in mind, consider how you would create a survey to assess patient satisfaction with the services your organization provides. You may wish to consider variables such as the ease of accessing care, patient wait time, friendliness of the staff, or the likelihood that a patient would recommend your organization to others.
For this Discussion, you generate questions and an overall plan for data collection that would be appropriate for a patient satisfaction survey in relation to the above scenario.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
