What is a Medical Device?
Medical device means any instrument, apparatus, machine,
for in vitro use intended by the manufacturer to be used,
alone or in combination, for human beings, for one or more
of the specific medical purposes of:
 diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment of disease
 investigation, replacement, modification, or support of the
anatomy or of a physiological process
 supporting or sustaining life
 providing information by means of in vitro examination of
specimens derived from the human body

3. Classification of medical devices
• Medical devices in India are classified as per their risk levels are divided into different classes
• First class (Low risk)
• Second class (Moderate risk)
• Third class (High risk)

4. Cervical Traction
Cervical traction has been applied widely for
pain relief of neck muscle spasm or nerve
root compression.
Traction occurs when a force is applied to a
part of the body to decrease muscle spasms
by stretching soft tissues.
Therapy of 10-15 minutes feels good.

5. Electrocardiography (ECG)
Electrocardiography (ECG or EKG) is the process of recording the electrical activity of the
heart over a period of time using electrodes placed on the skin.
These electrodes detect the tiny electrical changes on the skin that arise from the heart
muscle's electro physiologic pattern of depolarizing and repolarizing during each heartbeat.

EMG is a technique for evaluating and recording the electrical activity produced by skeletal
muscles.
Electromyography detects the electrical potential
generated by muscle cells.
The electrodes used for recording of electrical signals
from nerves and muscle fiber.

8. Electroencephalogram (EEG)
 Electroencephalography (EEG) is the recording of electrical activity along the scalp.
 the main diagnostic application of EEG is in the case of epilepsy, brain death, sleep
disorders
 Your brain cells communicate via electrical impulses
and are active all the time, even when you're asleep.

9. • The interior temperature in the body is constant, about 370C for a healthy person,
• elevated body temperature is a sign of disease or infection,
• There are two distinct areas in the body where temperature is measured routinely:
• The surface of the skin under the armpit
• or inside a body cavity such as the mouth.
The two most commonly used devices to measure body
temperature are:
• thermistors: require direct contact with the skin
• non-contact thermometers: measure body core
temperature inside the auditory canal.

In conclusion, I want to say that the medical devices have changed the previous state of medical
sciences. These instruments have increased the comfort level of patients as well as the doctors who
are taking care of them. These instruments have reduced the time which is required for getting the
result. Now, any normal person can check their health report by sitting at home. These have also
changed the way of determining the samples that are tested in the laboratories.
