This document provides instructions and criteria for students to summarize their "Place in Question" assignment using a presentation template. It outlines several sections for students to reflect on and evaluate their work, including recording experiences of their location, developing ideas using materials and technology, using historical and contemporary references, developing their brief, and applying professional practices. Students are asked to include photos and carefully explain how they have met the criteria in 14-20 point text for each project outcome.

1. Use this presentation template to summarise your
Place in Question assignment 2015
The template also introduces most of the units you’ll cover this year through selected criteria.
Up-load the finished PowerPoint to your block via SlideShare.
Each page asks you to reflect upon and evaluate your work since the beginning of
term, for each stage in the project.
Write careful explanations for each outcome (text between 14 & 20 points), and show
how you have covered the parts of the units listed on the page.
Include photos of each outcome to help this process.
Do not describe what you’ve done. Explain it, justify it and make links between
research, experiment and final outcomes.

a) I started by drawing my area in pencil, my
aim was to look at the shapes of the objects
in my area and understand them. I also drew a
rough birds eye view of the area to help with
my sketch up model and to gain a better
understanding of the space to help my future
drawings. I also experimented drawing the
space with other materials like charcoal, this
made me look more at the highlights and
shadows of my place in question rather than
the shapes and textures. I feel using different
mediums helped me study and illustrate my
place in question well as it meant I did not
rely on the material to give the effect I
wanted, it made me look at more detail at
what I was drawing or painting.
b) I made a good amount of tonal studies of
my place in question and I feel this improved
the studies I did that use more colour and
other techniques. For example this
watercolour study shown to the right. Using
more techniques meant I could look more at
the textures and the details of my area which
meant I could take more ideas from them of
what to develop my project into.

b) I started my SketchUp model using measurements and the birds eye view
drawing of my place in question, I then made an animation of moving around
my place in question along with some real video of the area and of my model.
The main focus of my area is the tree so I took this theme into my film as well.
The video shows a more realistic to the viewers image of the place in question
and it helps to explain the other work I have done based on this area. In the
short movie I made i tried to make it link to the drawings that I had been doing
so the colours and details could relate to eacother.

a) After studying my area I could see more
how there was a nature against man-
made situation as the tree is surrounded
by buildings and brick floor. This made me
think that I should try and convey this in
my large drawing so I used photocopied
images and straight lines around the
bottom of my page which then went to
the tree with extended flowing branches
to represent the natural element. The
contrast also became part of my 3D model
but i feel this worked better than my
drawing as it was a more obvious contrast.
My print a more abstracted interpretation
of my place in question, it is based on the
shapes of the twigs after i had constructed
them in my model and taken a picture of
their shadows. The process left me with
an interesting design for a print and
b) I learnt to not look at my place in question
literally when trying to develop my ideas
as it means I can be more experimental.
For instance I was going to use normal
sticks from the tree in my place in
question for my model however I tried
different ways of disguising what they
were; wrapping in string, painting, but
came to coating them in plaster.

• A) Ukiyo-e are woodblock prints
and came from Japan when there
was not many forms of art. The
prints influenced other printers
work of this time and introduced a
more graphic style to landscapes
which proved to be very popular.
• B) The prints show a very honest
view of Japan at that time as there
was not much need to heavily
stylise or abstract what the artists
could see while making these
prints. I think this is key to the style
of the prints and makes them
inspirational to other artists
because of their age but still a
contemporary look.
• C) It inspired me to keep simplistic
elements in my work. As I have
hopefully conveyed in my garments
designs that are intended to be for
a Japanese designer.

Developing your
personal brief
a) I developed my brief by looking at what areas of art and design i
am most interested in and looking at how I could push the work i
had already done towards this. As I had already looked into some
Japanese work and taken inspiration from it i thought I should aim
my textile ambitions towards this. I decided on making a sample
with an illustration that i could potentially present to a fashion
designer like Yohji Yamamoto to see if he would like it in his
collection. I then thought of the normal requirements a design that
you would send to a designer would have. For instance its purpose
and audience, I decided on menswear for winter/Autumn
collections. Before reaching this brief I looked into Yamamoto’s
style of fashion so that i could take influences from his style to
make the design fit with his other clothes and be more appealing
to him.
b) I looked at work by Yohji Yamamoto to understand his style and
make it my own, I then looked into fashion designers that have
created similar effects in their fashion to effects i have created in
my experiments and developments like my model using the
plastered sticks. I think came up with potential design ideas and
samples of what I imagine these designs to have on them until I
came up with my final one.

Developing your
personal brief
a) I looked at different colour ways and tried to
get them similar to my photos I took of my
model. I interpreted my brief to make a garment
for a catwalk as it is too complex for everyday
use.
b) I decided on using grey strong material as I
needed to be strong enough to hold the 3D
shapes I planned to attach to them. I tried using
a finer grey material because it represented the
shadows in my photos more but it wasn't strong
enough. I knew i want to create 3D white twigs
as part of my sample but I wasn't sure how to
create it in a textile way. I tried wrapping white
wool thread round fake small twigs that i had
rearranged but it was too thin so I bought white
fabric and wrapped that round it which was
much more effective and distorted the shape of
the twigs more like the plaster did, so i decided
to use this technique.

• c) I have been careful when using the printing press to avoid
getting my fingers caught in the roller. I have also had to use
the glue on my 3D model so I had to prepare an area to
work on and be careful where the hot glue goes. I also had
to use the spot welder on my 3D model to hold together
the copper wire cube that i made, to avoid any risks using
this I had to wear gloves and goggles to protect from the
sparks that could fly out.
• d) I used a clear white background and floor to place my 3D
model on and I projected a light onto it as well to give it a
more professional and finished look. Also when presenting
my final sample I used an A2 board with an illustration so
that it could be separately presented as a designer would in
real life.
a) I looked at an artist called Joshua Wiskey in the most detail but my research into other artist does look at
how they work as well. I have also visited Joshua Wiskey’s studio so i have a good understanding of how he
works.
b) Wiskey uses a lot of emotion in his painting and mixed colours, I tried using this style in my large drawing
that based on my place in question. I looked at the work the that Wiskey has on his website, I went to his
studio and I spoke to him about his work. This helped me learn about how some artists work and what pushes
them to keep working and inspired me to continue developing my ideas.

• B) I have used the same format
throughout my sketchbook. I also
used stamps for my titles so they
are consistent. I have mad use of
an A2 board to present my final
textile sample and fashion
illustration. Doing this has made
my final piece clear and well
presented as if it was for a client.
Before deciding on my brief and
theme I used brown neutral
colours from my place in question.
• C) I have visited and auditioned
for a music course at ACM I am
waiting to see if I have been
accepted. I have also booked my
open day to Falmouth university,
UAL and Bath spa university in a
fashion design course.

10. Your opinion and an evaluation of the project
This project started with drawings from sitting in front of my place in
question. I enjoyed this process as it allowed me to use different materials
and techniques. I found it useful looking into artists and the way the work
and also comparing their techniques as it made me consider the way I work
and help me learn new techniques by copying artists work. Defining the
different ways of representing space because it gave me a better
understanding of the techniques and meant that I could use these in my
development of work. For my 3D model I felt was successful in the way I
developed and then photographed it in different ways. It also helped as it
pushed the development of my project on faster meaning I could reach a
more sophisticated outcome. Overall this project has gone well in terms of
my development of ideas however if I had more time I would have used it for
collecting more research directly related to the brief.
