Teen Abuse Prescription Drug Abuse
Prescribed medication has become one of the top three leading drugs used and abused by teenagers in
America. According to Elizabeth Larsen, The Centers for Disease Control classifies prescription drug
abuse as the worst drug epidemic in United States history (Larsen p.4). This is the worst drug
epidemic in history because of the percentage of teenage usage. Based on different studies, pills are
the most commonly abused drug among twelve and thirteen year olds because of how easy they are to
access. In fact, many teens that abuse prescription medication has admitted that they, even with a
substance addiction, still receive prescriptions from their doctor. The teenage usage of prescription
medication could be prevented with better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Medical professionals should further their understanding of addiction; therefore, the medical
professional can help further a patient s knowledge on how serious prescription drugs can be.
There should be parental control over prescription medications for any child under eighteen years of
age. A teenager that is undergoing surgery or might have slight ADHD should not be prescribed
addictive medication without a parent. There are young people across Mississippi that have
accidentally overdosed on prescription drugs and died. According to Autumn Grooms, Some teen get
togethers, known as pharming parties , have a cover charge of pills that are placed in a large bowl
creating trail mix (Grooms). This means teenagers are taking multiple pills at the same time, possibly
causing a sever chemical reaction or worse, death. Autumn also says, If teenagers are abusing
pharmaceuticals or over the counter medications, parents should be able to identify it before it is too
late (Grooms). Parents should be the first people to spot if their child is acting strange in any way. The
parents might notice changes in the teen s behavior, mood, or friends.
Prescription drugs are one of the easiest drugs to acquire in the street s due to how cheap it is. Many

The Uses Of Coco Chanel And The 2.55 Handbags
In 1929 Gabrielle Chanel had designed a versatile and practical purse with straps which would
become her famous 2.55 bag. She was tired of carrying her handbag in her arms, creating the iconic
quilted purse that is coveted today (Hess, 2015, p.152). The 2.55 handbag bears the particular name
simply because it was originally issued in February 1955.
The 2.55 quilted bags were made from jersey fabrics or soft leather in the familiar shades of brown,
black, navy and beige. It was inspired by the jackets worn by jockeys. It was stitched over padding to
create a soft quilted effect and was given the trademark shoulder straps of leather plaited with gilt
chain, the same chain used to weight the suit linings. The shoulder strap liberated the hands and they
were soft, without stiff corners or hard edges. Gabrielle Chanel had used red linings so that the user

His version is the exactly the one designed by Coco Chanel back in 1955. The Reissue was made in
commemoration to the 50th anniversary of the original 2.55 and the name Reissue 2.55 should apply
only to those commemorative handbags. Instead, it s commonly used now as a name for all the
handbags resembling the original 2.55. As for those with CC interlocking, they are called Classic
Flaps (Short History of The Famous Chanel 2.55 Bag, 2007).
Many legends circulate on the subject of the Chanel 2.55, sifting through them and discerning which
is which can be both fun and disconcerting: they say that Gabrielle Chanel wanted to ease the high
society s ladies life by freeing their hands with shoulder hanged bags. It is said that although common
for the working class, the luxury circles dames had to carry their bags in their hands and not
practically hanging from their shoulders. Carrying a bag can be a difficult task when you are joggling

put a roof over people who are in need and also intends to better the health and wellbeing of citizens

There has been a significant amount of change which has had negative and positive effects on citizens
and communities in Aotearoa and the factors contributing to the impacts of this policy are social,
economic and environmental impacts.
Social factors contributing to this policy are that National has made it possible for registered
community housing providers to access the same income related housing subsides as housing New
Zealand which is another social housing company, which means tenants who need social housing will
be able to access discounted rents (Hamilton, 2014). This will have a positive impact on citizens in

What Is The Forced Nature Of Assimilation
In her short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies, Jhumpa Lahiri depicts various scenarios of
Indian immigrants moving to and living in the United States. A particularly salient theme discussed
throughout is the issue of assimilation vs. integration. Though the terms are often considered
interchangeable, in this book assimilation argues for adoption of American culture. Conversely,
integration advocates for the coexistence of foreign and American customs and allows immigrants to
establish a sense of home away from their original countries. The story entitled, The Third and Final
Continent specifically recounts a young Indian man s experience trying to establish himself in
Cambridge, Massachusetts after living in London. Prior to his immigration, the narrator had his
marriage arranged by his family in Calcutta, and much of the story illustrates the narrator s
apprehension for his wife, Mala s arrival from India. Recognizing that food is a significant aspect of
most cultures, Lahiri uses it as a motif to indicate the transformation of the narrator s cultural status in
the United States. Through food, she ultimately asserts the possibility of positive integration, rather
than just assimilation, into American society.
Lahiri demonstrates the forced nature of assimilation through the narrator s relationship with
American food. When the narrator first arrives in Cambridge and checks in at the YMCA, he notices a

Creatinine, a breakdown product of creatine phosphate, is a waste product excreted through urine.
Since, depending on muscle mass, age, sex, diet and exercise, creatinine is produced at a fairly
constant rate by the body, hence, its measurement is commonly used to assess the GFR (1). Various
methods often employed for the estimation of creatinine are: Jaffe s method, Enzymatic method, High

The absorption of light by normal bilirubin (4Z,15Z bilirubin) results in the creation of 2 isomeric
forms of bilirubin: structural isomer (Z lumirubin) and configurational isomer (4Z,15 E bilirubin).
Both these structural and configurational isomers of bilirubin have substantially different chemical
and light absorption properties than bilirubin, are less lipophilic than normal bilirubin and can be
excreted into bile without undergoing glucuronidation in the liver. The absorption of light by bilirubin
also results in the generation of excited state bilirubin molecules that react with oxygen to produce
colorless oxidation, or photooxidation products. The rate of formation of bilirubin photoproducts is
highly dependent on the intensity and wavelengths of the light used (13). The most efficient
wavelength for the isomerization of bilirubin is approximately 450 nm, whether applied to the fluid
samples for testing or the treatment of jaundice. Wavelengths that fall within the range of 400 nm 500
nm, and more specifically 445 nm 475 nm are known to effect isomerization (14). The blue lights are
chosen for light emission wavelengths of approximately 450 to 530 nm, which is the optimal range of
light absorption for bilirubin. In contrast, the optimal range of light absorption for

Ethical Theories Of Ethical Decision Making

Sad indictment of council s culture policy
From: Alice Sheepshanks, Arthington, near Leeds.
AS the air reverberates with the sound of rock from the Leeds Festival, at Bramham, I sorely lament
the lack of some culture and hope most sincerely that next year it will be possible for Leeds City
Council to support the Leeds Shakespeare Festival again.
It is so important to cater for all tastes, and not just to bow to the lowest common denominator. I
believe wholeheartedly that Shakespeare can be appreciated by all ages and classes, particularly if
performed by this most skilful and dedicated troupe, the British Shakespeare Company.
I have taken my two children (now aged 12 and 14) to the performances at Kirkstall Abbey since they
were quite small. They adored the spectacle, the language, the plot it was a marvellous opportunity for
them.
I feel desperately sad that this year they can wander about at Bramham and listen to the thundering
sound of Metallica and Tenacious D (which they love) but The Tempest or A Midsummer Night s
Dream are out of the question.
What a sad indictment on Leeds City Council.

The Jonestown Massacre was one of America s greatest tragedies in history. Due to extreme Racism

Andy Warhol Influences
Pop Art rose from the desire of artists to create art that broke from the standard ideas of what art is and
what art can be during the mid 1950s 1960s. However, they clung to images that were common to the
mass public in order to ensure audiences could relate to works and also find a sense of familiarity with
them. Subject matter such as celebrities, advertisements, comic books, e.t.c. was most often found in
the movement. Andy Warhol was a key innovator and leader in the Pop Art movement and has since
then become an easily recognizable icon of this time. He arguably helped pioneer many of the ideas
and themes of Pop Art. In doing so, there was a major shift in subject matter from his early work to his
most famous pieces. In the beginning, Warhol s work was personal and intimate. Over time, his
popular pieces became less narrative and began focusing more on what was popular, such as his
celebrity screen prints which eventually brought him notoriety. Warhol faced much discrimination in
the early years of his work regarding the obviously homoerotic subject matter of his pieces. He
detached the artist from the artwork over time because he recognized that his more blatantly
homosexual themed works would never gain traction or earn him respect in the art world. Though they
are rarely discussed, Warhol s early work greatly impacted the themes he tackled in his later years.
The censoring of his works such as Boys Kissing Boys, 13 Most Wanted Men, and Lonesome
Cowboys deterred Warhol from continuing his interest in homosexual subjects in his public works
because of the backlash he received from their exhibition and as a result encouraged him to move
towards more widely accepted and identifiable subjects such as celebrities and logos. Warhol s earlier
works are often overlooked or go completely unmentioned in regards to his development as an artist,
but their neglect only makes them that much more important. Long before he gained an interest in
popular culture, Warhol created a series of intimate continuous line drawings titled Boys Kissing
Boys. Andy submitted them for review at the Tanager Gallery, and both times they were promptly
rejected. In fact, they were the first works that Warhol ever submitted to a

Deception In The Open Window
Only Fools Fall
(An Analysis of Deception in The Open Window) In the immortal words of J. Cole, Fool me one time,
shame on you. Fool me twice, can t put the blame on you. In other words, deception is a tool that is
used repetitively, and it is a tool we should all be able to learn to fight against in the later stages of our
lives. When deception enters our lives, we often fail to realize it. However, it is necessary to form a
sense of awareness when it comes to the ways in which others deceive us. In The Open Window, it is
very clear that one character above all others has mastered the art of deception. And yet, the other
characters remain completely oblivious to this. It is clear that this character has fooled her family
multiple times. But whether they do not realize it, or simply refuse to accept it, it is clearly very
important that they see the light so to speak. Otherwise they will continue to be deceived their entire
lives. In The Open Window, the author fuels deception through a young female character; Vera fools

Standardized Tests Don t Measure Intelligence Essay
Standardized Tests Don t Measure Intelligence Students intelligence is often measured by standardized
tests, but these students are at their worst while taking the test and it does not accurately measure their
intelligence. Students are stressed, nervous, or simply do not take tests well. Standardized tests also
don t show how hard working a student is, which is important and can be proven by a GPA. Many
schools measure the teacher and school on how well they are teaching based on how high of a score
the students place on a standardized test. The problem with this is that the people who make these
standardized tests have no idea what the students have learned in the classroom so that being said, the
students often are not tested on what their teacher has taught them during the school year. W. James
Popham explains the mismatch of standardized tests and what students are taught: To illustrate the
seriousness of the mismatch that can occur between what s taught locally and what s tested through
standardized achievement tests, educators ought to know about an important study at Michigan State
University reported in 1983 by Freeman and his colleagues. These researchers selected five nationally
standardized achievement tests in mathematics and studied their content for grades 4 6. Then,
operating on the very reasonable assumption that what goes on instructionally in classrooms is often

His Birth
Jesus s birth story is known by us all in some form or other. His birth is celebrated in countless songs,

Beginning this story and journey wise men, most say three, correlated by the three extravagant gifts.

discover the Christ child in a manger with his mother, and the guy married to his mom. Everyone can

1993 World Trade Center Bombing Analysis
1993 World Trade Center Bombing
On February 26, 1993, Middle Eastern inspired terrorism truly hit the United States homeland. A small
group of seven terrorists rented a van, parked it in the underground parking garage of the World Trade
Center, departed and then detonated it. The explosion resulted in six killed, more than one thousand
injured, and a nearly 100 foot crater that was several stories deep. (FBI, 2008).
The ensuing investigation involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and New York Joint
Terrorism Task Force and many FBI agents worldwide. The investigation revealed many clues. The
first was the vehicle identification number for the rented van, which led to the arrest of Mohammad
Salameh. More clues eventually led to the arrest of five other members of the group.
After the attack, the Port Authority spent vast sums of money to repair the building as well as
improving the operational and safety capabilities of the facility. Security was strengthened and all
visitors were required to be screened and receive visitor badges. A radio repeater was also installed to
improve communications within the entire complex. (Aftermath, 2014).

Richard Freeman Research Paper
Richard Freeman was born at Oakland Naval Hospital on October 8, 1986 to Windy Rice and Dale
Freeman. He was raised by his mom and grandparents with his sister. As a child, his family moved a
lot because his grandfather was in the Navy. He loved playing football. He enjoyed his childhood. As
a Freshman in High school on 9/11 he watched the twin towers fall in English class. He wanted to hurt
the terrorists that attacked our country. He felt this as a calling to join the military.
At 17 Richard joined the Army. He went to basic training between his junior and senior year in high
school at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. He describes basic training as 90% mental and 10%
physical. He felt this was one of the easiest parts of his military service. He had to stay 2 weeks longer

Sebastian Bach Biography
Johann Sebastian Bach once said, The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the
glory of God and the refreshment of the soul. It is known that Bach is classified as a musical genius
who served the Lord, but how did his music influence later musicians? His prodigious talents
discovered during his early childhood brought him much success throughout the Baroque Era allowing
him to write over one thousand compositions. An exploration of his youth, his trials and struggles, and
writing techniques will help outsiders gain a better understanding of the magnificent mind of J.S.

How Did Beethoven Change Music
Ludwig Van Beethoven, was the composer who changed music more than any other composer, the
sound of music and what the other composers that were to come after him thought. He wrote nine
symphonies, five piano concertos, an opera and many pieces of chamber music that jolted music right
out of itself. (Landon) Beethoven changed music by creating a new era called Romanticism,
influencing the other composers and changing the old methods by adding a special twist.
The first way that Beethoven changed music was by creating romanticism. Ludwig is viewed as the
most transitional figure between the eras of classical and romanticism of musical history. Even though
his first period was more conventional he grew tired of this and made his second time period ... Show

He took the old methods and twisted to match his style of thinking. As mentioned before, Ludwig used
a D major melody and a B minor harmony all at once. (Discuss) He then called this juxtaposed chords,
which were opposing the old idea where they generally did not mix minor and major chords. If he
changed the way chords were played, then obviously he changed music. Ludwig also influenced
Romantic composers by changing the ideas of programmatic writing. (Discuss) He changed the idea
of writing music from composing just to compose into actually creating a picture in the listeners mind.
Beethoven s Symphony Number Six was the first programmatic symphony where the music was
meant to paint a picture, compared to simply being a series of sounds. (Guthrie) The earlier works of
his period brought the Classical forms to the highest expressive point, expanded the formal, structural
and harmonic terms of his teachers Mozart and Haydn. (Guthrie) While he was influenced by his
teachers, he took their old ways and transformed them into a new version of thinking to help others
actually express themselves through the power of music. He changed the old methods into a new and
improved version. He held onto the old culture without wearing it

Why Is Technology Important In Ww2
During many wars, technology that was developed for specific wartime needs has been integrated to
everyday use but, compared to other wars, World War 2 had the largest effect of the technology we use
today. While a lot of countries decided to go with quality over quantity, the United States decided to
go with quantity over quality. While they decided to go with quantity over quality, their technology
was still good for that time. Technology played a major role during World War 2, from
communications to transmit information across the battlefield, to aircraft and chemical weapons
bombing, to technologies that we still use to this day.
America was developing new technology and improving on technologies they already had throughout
the war. As stated above, technology played a major role during World War 2, so getting ahead of the
enemy was key to winning the war. One of the key technologies in World War 2 was their logistics and
communications. America used electronic computers for ballistics and trajectory calculators. Without

Marge Piercy s The Secretary Chant uses sounds to show that human emotion can be filed away and
replaced. In John Updike s Player Piano personification is used to wake up an inhuman piano that
plays itself, sort of like the poem itself does when read aloud. Updike uses assonance and consonance
in the first couple of lines to give musicality to the lines. The devices are first used with a repetition of
ick sounds to mimic the keys on the piano. Onomatopoeia is used throughout the poem to as words
make the sounds musically and mimic the Player Piano. The author follows those sounds with a

denotation means to move with a fast or jerky motion. The combination of the two meanings gives the
feeling that the piano is alive. John Updike s poem, Player Piano shows through sound and images that

direction available to follow, we re definitely taking advantage of the opportunity. Americans became
too accustomed to the period of inflation through the 1990s, and the ongoing recession is affecting
most everyone. The Big Three automakers (GM, Ford and Chrysler) have made massive cuts to their

In 2008 and 2009, a series of bailouts were provided to General Motors and Chrysler, due to slowing
car sales and massive quarterly losses. Unions buckled due to the fact that they received much higher
wages, and more luxurious benefits than their non unionized counterparts. In 2006, Consumer Reports
top ten car picks were Japanese (Noe). Parts makers were quick to move jobs overseas, where laborers
were willing to work for much less money. In 2008, GM closed 14 factories, 2,000 dealers, and cut
47,000 employees. All of these factors, among numerous more, were responsible for the collapse of
the economy on a national and global scale. Gasoline prices soared during the energy crisis which
lasted from 2003 2008. Consumers moved from buying SUV s and trucks to more fuel efficient cars,
such as hybrids. This was especially disconcerting considering that these larger vehicles were the most
profitable for the automakers (MSNBC). The market which was hardest hit was that of the parts
makers, which saw their cash flow cut in half, since automakers were rushing to cut production
(Economist). GM filed for bankruptcy 32 days after Chrysler, effectively making GM the fourth
largest company ever to file for bankruptcy (Carty). According to Darwin Bible, probably one of the
worst things about it has been watching all the stress on workers faces and their families faces (Carty).

William Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
Go up to just about any literary scholar and ask them the simple question of, who is the greatest writer
known to the planet. Many will respond with a likely sarcastic response, but tell you of the man
known as William Shakespeare. He s most popular for his drama play called Romeo and Juliet, but
holds credentials in the literary department for much more than that. He s written dozens of plays,
many dramas such as MacBeth and Hamlet, with some noteworthy comedies for the time period like
Much Ado about Nothing and A Midsummer s Night Dream. While some of his plays have
straightforward storylines and the title is extremely revealing about the characters and meaning of the
play, other titles are more vague and hidden to the unexamining eye. One title that is noticed for
having this effect of being vague to its reader is the dark comedy called Measure by Measure. There
are many reasons and theories speculated upon the selection process for Shakespeare s theatrical titles,
but there is no definitive method for each of them. Shakespeare named his dark comedy play Measure
for Measure for the small details in social, emotional, and ironic encounters that lead to the play s
ultimate climax. There are multiple social encounters throughout the play that entice and explain the
shows title in character interactions. The play surrounds the actions of four main characters being
Isabella, Angelo, the Duke of Vienna, and Claudio. The social interactions of the story are highly

Feminism In Flatland
A movement called Feminism started in the 1840 s and even still exists today. The movement fights
for women s equality with men. In the book, Flatland, by Edwin A. Abbott, the women living in
Flatland, a land of two dimensions, are seen as straight lines with no brains by the men who are
shapes. The book is narrated by A. Square who discovers new dimensions, or lands, and learns about
them. The theme of the story is that women in the Victorian Era are treated as if they are less superior
than men.
Abbott expresses that women are useless throughout his book. In Flatland, their angles are very small,
due to being a very skinny parallelogram, therefore they lack intelligence. For as they have no

Women are very thin parallelograms that resemble a needle. For if a Soldier is a wedge, a Woman is a
needle; being, so to speak, all point, at least at the two extremities (Abbott 10). In Victorian era,
women all wanted a small waist because men thought it was beautiful. A needle represents the woman
because needles are thin. In Flatland, they were assigned similar color as Circles for the Universal
Colour Bill. For by assigning to the Women the same two colours as were assigned to the Priests . . .
every Woman would appear like a Priest, and be treated with corresponding respect and deference a
prospect that could not fail to attract the female Sex in a mass (Abbott 29). A. Square s usage of words
makes women seem selfish. The Circles are the highest class and are treated with respect. He says that
women are painted the same as circles, which rounded up all the female s attention because they want
respect. Women are useless when it comes to education. About three hundred years ago, it was
decreed by the Chief Circle that, since women are deficient in Reason but abundant in Emotion, they
ought no longer to be treated as rational, nor receive any mental education (Abbott 39 40). The Chief
Circle thinks women are useless in reasoning and education, yet very emotional. he believed women
do not deserve to be able to learn so he took it as their consequences. Abbott shows that how the

How Did Darwin Contribute To Evolution
Long before Charles Darwin, other people made important contributions to the historical development
of the theory of evolution. It all started in 5th century BC when early Greek philosophers
characterized the origin of the natural world as by the power of nature rather than by supernatural
force. They proposed the theory of evolution to explain the basis of the natural world. Thus,
evolutionary theory began with the Ionian philosopher Anaximander (611 546 BC) who proposed
living beings gradually developed from water and that humans originated from animals. He proposed
the world had arisen from an undifferentiated, indeterminate substance. In the 6th century BC,
Xenophanes (570475 BC) developed Anaximander s theories by using fossils as ... Show more content

Its philosophy was dedicated to unveiling God s plan by studying his creation. Species were
individually created and designed by God for a purpose. This popular doctrine of a fixed, permanent
and unchanging species overruled suggested ideas of evolution. Natural theologian Carolus Linnaeus
(1701 1778) was the Father of Taxonomy and he developed the two part system (genus and species) of
naming organisms and grouping species into a hierarchy. He firmly believed that species were
permanent and dedicated his life to classifying organisms to reveal the plan of God s creation.
Through greater knowledge of the natural world, discoveries in the geological sciences greatly
contributed to making Darwin s theory of evolution possible. French geologist Buffon (1707 1778)
came to recognize that sedimentary rocks were laid down at different times suggesting the age of the
earth. French zoologist and paleontologist Georges Cuvier (1769 1832) documented the succession of
fossil species, noting the progressiveness of the fossil record however, he was opposed to evolution
and argued that boundaries between organisms from different strata were cause by past catastrophic
events (catastrophism). Uniformitarian, Charles Lyell (1797 1875) suggested that various geological
formations on Earth resulted from the cumulative effects of slow but continuous processes over long
expanses of time confirming that slow gradual changes over expansive amounts of time can yield

Doctor Yealland In The Antithesis Of Rivers
Authority through Obedience Authority, in general, is manifested through obedience, if nobody obeys
you, you have no authority. There are two main reasons why people obey said authority. Either they
trust their authority figure and agree with the commands they are given, or they fear the consequences
of disobedience. Most French and British men fought for their country because of the former reason,
they believed they were fighting for a just cause; however, in due time, soldiers views changed, and
they only stayed in light of the consequences of deserting. This juxtaposition between their fear of
death and harm and the impossibility of desertion for survival created a dynamic that manifested itself

It s unclear if the godlike semblance of authority is manufactured for the sake of Yealland s treatment
plans or if he believes in his authority so much. When Yealland speaks to Rivers about his patient

Yealland s view is that any sympathy or understanding shown towards these patients that don t believe
they can be cured will only validate their position of helplessness and make them feel like their self
pity is justified. Just before this he also says, The patient has to know when he enters the electrical
room that there s no way out except by a full recovery. (Barker 228) In this way, he forces his patients
to believe they can be cured simply because their torment wouldn t end until they were well again.
When Callan tries to escape the electrical room a second time during his electroshock therapy, Rivers
couldn t bear to go on watching. He looked down at the backs of his clasped hands. (Barker 232)
Rivers apparently doesn t agree with Yealland s methods but makes no actions to stop him during

The three options all have their own advantages and disadvantages that are compared and weighed.
The first option is the current one of complete criminalization of marijuana. This option provides
safety for the public, while limiting the freedoms of business. The second option that the government
has is the legalization of marijuana with the imposition of a tax. This idea provides a bit of safety,

This means teenagers are taking multiple pills at the same time, possibly causing a sever chemical reaction or worse, death. Autumn also says, If teenagers are abusing pharmaceuticals or over the counter medications, parents should be able to identify it before it is too late (Grooms). Parents should be the first people to spot if their child is acting strange in any way. The parents might notice changes in the teen s behavior, mood, or friends. Prescription drugs are one of the easiest drugs to acquire in the street s due to how cheap it is. Many young people in Mississippi use prescription drugs because of how easy it ... She was tired of carrying her handbag in her arms, creating the iconic quilted purse that is coveted today (Hess, 2015, p.152). The 2.55 handbag bears the particular name simply because it was originally issued in February 1955. The 2.55 quilted bags were made from jersey fabrics or soft leather in the familiar shades of brown, black, navy and beige. It was inspired by the jackets worn by jockeys. It was stitched over padding to create a soft quilted effect and was given the trademark shoulder straps of leather plaited with gilt chain, the same chain used to weight the suit linings. The shoulder strap liberated the hands and they were soft, without stiff corners or hard edges. Gabrielle Chanel had used red linings so that the user could easily see the contents and ... The Reissue was made in commemoration to the 50th anniversary of the original 2.55 and the name Reissue 2.55 should apply only to those commemorative handbags. Instead, it s commonly used now as a name for all the handbags resembling the original 2.55. • 8. What Is The Forced Nature Of Assimilation In her short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies, Jhumpa Lahiri depicts various scenarios of Indian immigrants moving to and living in the United States. A particularly salient theme discussed throughout is the issue of assimilation vs. integration. Though the terms are often considered interchangeable, in this book assimilation argues for adoption of American culture. Conversely, integration advocates for the coexistence of foreign and American customs and allows immigrants to establish a sense of home away from their original countries. The story entitled, The Third and Final Continent specifically recounts a young Indian man s experience trying to establish himself in Cambridge, Massachusetts after living in London. Prior to his immigration, the narrator had his marriage arranged by his family in Calcutta, and much of the story illustrates the narrator s apprehension for his wife, Mala s arrival from India. Recognizing that food is a significant aspect of most cultures, Lahiri uses it as a motif to indicate the transformation of the narrator s cultural status in the United States. Through food, she ultimately asserts the possibility of positive integration, rather than just assimilation, into American society. The absorption of light by normal bilirubin (4Z,15Z bilirubin) results in the creation of 2 isomeric forms of bilirubin: structural isomer (Z lumirubin) and configurational isomer (4Z,15 E bilirubin). Both these structural and configurational isomers of bilirubin have substantially different chemical and light absorption properties than bilirubin, are less lipophilic than normal bilirubin and can be excreted into bile without undergoing glucuronidation in the liver. The absorption of light by bilirubin also results in the generation of excited state bilirubin molecules that react with oxygen to produce colorless oxidation, or photooxidation products. The rate of formation of bilirubin photoproducts is highly dependent on the intensity and wavelengths of the light used (13). The most efficient wavelength for the isomerization of bilirubin is approximately 450 nm, whether applied to the fluid samples for testing or the treatment of jaundice. Wavelengths that fall within the range of 400 nm 500 nm, and more specifically 445 nm 475 nm are known to effect isomerization (14). • 14. Andy Warhol Influences Pop Art rose from the desire of artists to create art that broke from the standard ideas of what art is and what art can be during the mid 1950s 1960s. However, they clung to images that were common to the mass public in order to ensure audiences could relate to works and also find a sense of familiarity with them. Subject matter such as celebrities, advertisements, comic books, e.t.c. was most often found in the movement. Andy Warhol was a key innovator and leader in the Pop Art movement and has since then become an easily recognizable icon of this time. He arguably helped pioneer many of the ideas and themes of Pop Art. In doing so, there was a major shift in subject matter from his early work to his most famous pieces. In the beginning, Warhol s work was personal and intimate. Over time, his popular pieces became less narrative and began focusing more on what was popular, such as his celebrity screen prints which eventually brought him notoriety. Warhol faced much discrimination in the early years of his work regarding the obviously homoerotic subject matter of his pieces. He detached the artist from the artwork over time because he recognized that his more blatantly homosexual themed works would never gain traction or earn him respect in the art world. Though they are rarely discussed, Warhol s early work greatly impacted the themes he tackled in his later years. The censoring of his works such as Boys Kissing Boys, 13 Most Wanted Men, and Lonesome Cowboys deterred Warhol from continuing his interest in homosexual subjects in his public works because of the backlash he received from their exhibition and as a result encouraged him to move towards more widely accepted and identifiable subjects such as celebrities and logos. Warhol s earlier works are often overlooked or go completely unmentioned in regards to his development as an artist, but their neglect only makes them that much more important. Long before he gained an interest in popular culture, Warhol created a series of intimate continuous line drawings titled Boys Kissing Boys. Andy submitted them for review at the Tanager Gallery, and both times they were promptly rejected. In fact, they were the first works that Warhol ever submitted to a ... Standardized Tests Don t Measure Intelligence Essay Standardized Tests Don t Measure Intelligence Students intelligence is often measured by standardized tests, but these students are at their worst while taking the test and it does not accurately measure their intelligence. Students are stressed, nervous, or simply do not take tests well. Standardized tests also don t show how hard working a student is, which is important and can be proven by a GPA. Many schools measure the teacher and school on how well they are teaching based on how high of a score the students place on a standardized test. The problem with this is that the people who make these standardized tests have no idea what the students have learned in the classroom so that being said, the students often are not tested on what their teacher has taught them during the school year. W. James Popham explains the mismatch of standardized tests and what students are taught: To illustrate the seriousness of the mismatch that can occur between what s taught locally and what s tested through standardized achievement tests, educators ought to know about an important study at Michigan State University reported in 1983 by Freeman and his colleagues. (Landon) Beethoven changed music by creating a new era called Romanticism, influencing the other composers and changing the old methods by adding a special twist. The first way that Beethoven changed music was by creating romanticism. Ludwig is viewed as the most transitional figure between the eras of classical and romanticism of musical history. He took the old methods and twisted to match his style of thinking. As mentioned before, Ludwig used a D major melody and a B minor harmony all at once. (Discuss) He then called this juxtaposed chords, which were opposing the old idea where they generally did not mix minor and major chords. If he changed the way chords were played, then obviously he changed music. Ludwig also influenced Romantic composers by changing the ideas of programmatic writing. (Discuss) He changed the idea of writing music from composing just to compose into actually creating a picture in the listeners mind. Beethoven s Symphony Number Six was the first programmatic symphony where the music was meant to paint a picture, compared to simply being a series of sounds. (Guthrie) The earlier works of his period brought the Classical forms to the highest expressive point, expanded the formal, structural and harmonic terms of his teachers Mozart and Haydn. (Guthrie) While he was influenced by his teachers, he took their old ways and transformed them into a new version of thinking to help others actually express themselves through the power of music. Why Is Technology Important In Ww2 During many wars, technology that was developed for specific wartime needs has been integrated to everyday use but, compared to other wars, World War 2 had the largest effect of the technology we use today. While a lot of countries decided to go with quality over quantity, the United States decided to go with quantity over quality. While they decided to go with quantity over quality, their technology was still good for that time. Technology played a major role during World War 2, from communications to transmit information across the battlefield, to aircraft and chemical weapons bombing, to technologies that we still use to this day. America was developing new technology and improving on technologies they already had throughout the war. As stated above, technology played a major role during World War 2, so getting ahead of the enemy was key to winning the war. Thus, evolutionary theory began with the Ionian philosopher Anaximander (611 546 BC) who proposed living beings gradually developed from water and that humans originated from animals. This popular doctrine of a fixed, permanent and unchanging species overruled suggested ideas of evolution. He firmly believed that species were permanent and dedicated his life to classifying organisms to reveal the plan of God s creation. Through greater knowledge of the natural world, discoveries in the geological sciences greatly contributed to making Darwin s theory of evolution possible. French geologist Buffon (1707 1778) came to recognize that sedimentary rocks were laid down at different times suggesting the age of the earth. French zoologist and paleontologist Georges Cuvier (1769 1832) documented the succession of fossil species, noting the progressiveness of the fossil record however, he was opposed to evolution and argued that boundaries between organisms from different strata were cause by past catastrophic events (catastrophism). The second option that the government has is the legalization of marijuana with the imposition of a tax.
