Pinehurst Country Club
Tree Management Guide
February 2014
Pinehurst Grounds Department
Denver, Colorado

The Tree Management Program Guide at Pinehurst Country Club is established to maintain and enhance the tree
plantings where they have become an integral part of the golf course design. The plan will determine which trees
are integral to the playability and strategy of the course and those which may adversely impact the course.
The management of our urban forest is an important task. Identifying, quantifying, and understanding the tree
population is crucial to determining a comprehensive, long term approach to its well-being. Trees will generally live
longer and gradually require less intensive care with scheduled maintenance.
The tree inventory is an integral element of the comprehensive plan. The process follows three phases. The
development of the Tree Management Plan at Pinehurst Country Club includes three phases.
I INVENTORY
II ANALYSIS
III IMPLEMENTATION
I INVENTORY
The inventory is the foundation for formulating the plan. An inventory of trees provides detailed information for
the manager. Inventory data must be systematically collected and stored for analysis. Managers can forecast
maintenance and replacement needs and budget for tree-related expenditures based on this information.
This data aids in developing long-range planning and design decisions such as new plantings, ensuring species
diversification, and prioritizing maintenance actions.
Tree inventory information can be input into a computer aided drafting program database and geographical
information system (GIS) to build an integrated tree management plan and effectively maintain the installation’s
tree resources.
Trees vary considerably in life expectancy, growth habit, and maintenance requirements. It is important to record
and maintain composite data on the various species found on the installation for the purpose of completing other
requirements such as tree maintenance budgeting and personnel scheduling.
The inventory stage should be updated every three years.
A) Data Collection
The first step in accomplishing a tree inventory is to systematically collect and store data. Tree species, location,
size, and overall condition of the tree population are the primary items collected. It is imperative that consistency
and accuracy of the tree data be maintained throughout the inventory phase.
Individual tree locations can be determined by aerial photos, detailed ground measurements, Global Positioning
Systems, or a combination of all. Each tree is recorded on a map and assigned a number for entry into the
database. Individual trees are identified by common and botanical names and numbered sequentially. This helps to
determine the overall composition of the installation’s tree population.
B) Location
Initially trees will be located and numbered by a hole-to-hole description. In the future, tree locations will be
mapped by GPS and placed on map program of the Lynx Irrigation Program.
C) Identification
Trees will be identified by their type, age classification and current condition. See attached sheets
D) Size Classification
Tree trunk diameter is an indicator of the relative age of the tree. Collectively, this information provides insight
into the maturity distribution for each species. Diameter is measured at 4-1/2 feet above the ground.
3
E) Overall Condition
Condition addresses the current state of the tree’s health, structural soundness, shape, and growth rate.
Discoloration, decay, dieback, decreased internodal length, and/or disfigured or dead stems or roots are symptoms
of poor condition. The overall health and condition of a tree is determined by analyzing root characteristics, trunk
and branch structure, canopy, foliage, and any presence of disease and pests.
EXCELLENT - trees have the best qualities of their species. They have excellent form and very minor
maintenance problems. There are virtually no dead branches, deformities, or nutritional problems. They are in an
acceptable location and can be expected to achieve a full mature shape and life expectancy.
GOOD - trees are judged to be desirable and with proper maintenance can be returned to an excellent
classification. They may be interfering with utility lines, planted in an overcrowded location, or have minor insect,
pathogen, or nutritional deficiencies.
FAIR - (Declining) trees have some or all of the following problems: large dead limbs with as much as half
the tree already dead, large cavities in the trunk, major deformities, girdling roots, obvious insect, pathogen, or
nutritional problems. Immediate maintenance and proper care may be able to save the tree.
POOR - trees are in a very degraded condition with irreversible problems. They have over 50% dead
branches, drastic deformities, and severe insect, pathogen, or nutritional problems. They will have to be removed
as soon as possible. DEAD trees have over 90% dead branches and have completely succumbed to insects,
pathogens, or nutritional deficiencies. Removal is required.
II ANALYSIS
The tree inventory will be used in prioritizing maintenance tasks. Overall maintenance requirements will be
determined by observing the condition of the trunk, large branches, and canopy of each tree, as well as the tree’s
location relative to the course design. These conditions may necessitate pruning to maintain line of sight and avoid
poor turf conditions.
Tree condition data should be used to develop cost-effective pruning and removal schedules. The following areas
contribute to establishing a viable maintenance program:
Species diversification
Approximate age and life expectancy
Removal and pruning requirements
A) Species Diversification
In general, no genus and species (e.g., Quercus rubra) should account for more that 10% of the total tree
population. Further, no single genus (e.g., Quercus) should comprise more than 30% of the total tree population.
Having a large concentration of one species could lead to a large number of trees being lost if affected by insect or
disease pathogens; an entire species of trees could be at risk.
B) Approximate Age and Life Expectancy
Tree species have different life expectancies and different diameters, heights, and crown spreads at maturity. It is,
therefore, more useful to make general classifications of age such as young, mature, and over mature rather than
actual years. The diameter of a tree measured at 4-1/2 feet above the ground is the standard used to classify tree
age.
YOUNG trees are 6 inches or less in diameter
MATURE trees are 6 to 24 inches in diameter
OVER MATURE trees are greater than 24 inches in diameter
The ideal age distribution of a species in the urban forest, and for the population as a whole, is 20% young, 60%
mature, and 20% over mature. A high percentage of over mature trees could necessitate a massive, expensive
removal and if required a replanting program. An appropriate age mixture can be achieved by removing and
4
replanting a certain percentage of trees each year. Trees should not be removed based solely on age, but
condition rating and species type will be considered.
C) Removal and Pruning Requirements
Trees lose vigor and die from natural causes such as disease and insect pathogens, weather conditions, and from
physical injury due to vehicles, vandalism, poisoning, and root disturbance. Trees can also have a negative impact
to turf conditions and playability. Trees provide shade and reduce sunlight for photosynthesis with competing
plants. Roots systems are also invasive to nearby plants and structures such as cart path and buildings. When trees
are planted to close to each other, they compete for sun, water and nutrients and unhealthy conditions exist.
Trees should be removed to
 Reduce safety risks to persons or property
 Improve turf conditions at putting greens
 Improve turf conditions at fairways, tees and other golf course features
 Encourage air movement, open vistas and improve playability
Tree maintenance requirements can be categorized as follows:
HIGH-PRIORITY REMOVAL trees should be removed as soon as possible as their location and/or condition
present risks to persons or property.
LOW-PRIORITY REMOVAL trees should be scheduled and accomplished when resources are available.
IMMEDIATE PRUNING trees present safety risks to persons or property. They may have dangerous broken
branches and large deadwood. Pruning should be accomplished as soon as possible, along with a close
examination for decay or severe dieback. If these conditions exist, the tree should be removed.
HIGH-PRIORITY PRUNING trees should be attended to as soon as scheduling will allow, starting with those
presenting the greatest safety risks. They have broken branches and areas of deadwood but do not present an
immediate safety hazard to persons or property. They should also be examined closely during trimming operations
for signs of decay or severe dieback and removed if necessary.
ROUTINE PRUNING requires the removal of dead, dying, diseased, or obviously weak, heavy, or hazardous
branches, and deadwood. Routine, ongoing pruning should be scheduled and programmed to ensure all tree
pruning is accomplished on a minimum cycle of five to seven years. It is important to remember that low priority
problems can become high priority if they are neglected for an extended period of time.
Thinning of tree canopies to reduce crossing or unnecessary branches should be accomplished routinely. This
reduces the potential for wind-induced branch breakage and increases sunlight and air circulation within the
crown. Thinning of tree canopies substantially reduces the incidence of insect and disease related problems.
All pruning should be completed based on ANSI A300 standard and approved by the clubs arborist. There should
never be any more than 25 % reduction in foliage in any one year.
III IMPLEMENTATION
A) Mulching
Probably the most neglected tree care practice is mulching. Placing 4 inches of organic mulch over the entire root
system reduces environmental stress, conserves moisture, minimizes mechanical damage from mowers and weed
eaters, and reduces nutrient competition from weeds and turf. Although any organic matter can be used as mulch,
shredded leaves, pine straw, peat moss, and shredded or composted tree bark and chips are the most widely
accepted amendments. Care must be taken to ensure that a 4 inch wide ring around the tree trunk is maintained
clear of mulch to guard against decay and other problems associated with excessive moisture.
B) Monitoring
Monitoring insect and disease infestations by regular inspections and responsive treatment will help to maintain
the health and vitality of the trees. A certified arborist can take steps to prevent or reduce the severity of future
disease, insect, and other pathogenic problems through periodic inspections (at least once a year). By closely
5
observing new leaves or buds, leaf size, twig growth, and crown dieback, a treatment can be recommended to
prevent major problems from affecting the tree population. Signs of poor tree health include trunk decay, loose
bark, and deformed growths.
C) Planting
Tree planting is one of the most important aspects of the tree management plan. Trees should be planted
according to this management guide. Plantings should benefit the property in regards to playability, aesthetics and
maintenance. Proper best management practices should be applied when planting.
Adjacent Property Owners
Property owners adjacent to the golf course are prohibited to plant a tree on Pinehurst property. All plantings
must be approved by the Director of Grounds and/or General Manager. Plantings should benefit the country club
property.
Annual Tree Management Action Plan
Each year an action plan will be prepared by the Director of Grounds and the grounds staff for the Green
Committee. The Action Plan will outline annual tree plantings, pruning and removal for the property for the
upcoming winter.

Pinehurst CC Tree Management Guide Final

  • 1. 1 Pinehurst Country Club Tree Management Guide February 2014 Pinehurst Grounds Department Denver, Colorado
  • 2. 2 The Tree Management Program Guide at Pinehurst Country Club is established to maintain and enhance the tree plantings where they have become an integral part of the golf course design. The plan will determine which trees are integral to the playability and strategy of the course and those which may adversely impact the course. The management of our urban forest is an important task. Identifying, quantifying, and understanding the tree population is crucial to determining a comprehensive, long term approach to its well-being. Trees will generally live longer and gradually require less intensive care with scheduled maintenance. The tree inventory is an integral element of the comprehensive plan. The process follows three phases. The development of the Tree Management Plan at Pinehurst Country Club includes three phases. I INVENTORY II ANALYSIS III IMPLEMENTATION I INVENTORY The inventory is the foundation for formulating the plan. An inventory of trees provides detailed information for the manager. Inventory data must be systematically collected and stored for analysis. Managers can forecast maintenance and replacement needs and budget for tree-related expenditures based on this information. This data aids in developing long-range planning and design decisions such as new plantings, ensuring species diversification, and prioritizing maintenance actions. Tree inventory information can be input into a computer aided drafting program database and geographical information system (GIS) to build an integrated tree management plan and effectively maintain the installation’s tree resources. Trees vary considerably in life expectancy, growth habit, and maintenance requirements. It is important to record and maintain composite data on the various species found on the installation for the purpose of completing other requirements such as tree maintenance budgeting and personnel scheduling. The inventory stage should be updated every three years. A) Data Collection The first step in accomplishing a tree inventory is to systematically collect and store data. Tree species, location, size, and overall condition of the tree population are the primary items collected. It is imperative that consistency and accuracy of the tree data be maintained throughout the inventory phase. Individual tree locations can be determined by aerial photos, detailed ground measurements, Global Positioning Systems, or a combination of all. Each tree is recorded on a map and assigned a number for entry into the database. Individual trees are identified by common and botanical names and numbered sequentially. This helps to determine the overall composition of the installation’s tree population. B) Location Initially trees will be located and numbered by a hole-to-hole description. In the future, tree locations will be mapped by GPS and placed on map program of the Lynx Irrigation Program. C) Identification Trees will be identified by their type, age classification and current condition. See attached sheets D) Size Classification Tree trunk diameter is an indicator of the relative age of the tree. Collectively, this information provides insight into the maturity distribution for each species. Diameter is measured at 4-1/2 feet above the ground.
  • 3. 3 E) Overall Condition Condition addresses the current state of the tree’s health, structural soundness, shape, and growth rate. Discoloration, decay, dieback, decreased internodal length, and/or disfigured or dead stems or roots are symptoms of poor condition. The overall health and condition of a tree is determined by analyzing root characteristics, trunk and branch structure, canopy, foliage, and any presence of disease and pests. EXCELLENT - trees have the best qualities of their species. They have excellent form and very minor maintenance problems. There are virtually no dead branches, deformities, or nutritional problems. They are in an acceptable location and can be expected to achieve a full mature shape and life expectancy. GOOD - trees are judged to be desirable and with proper maintenance can be returned to an excellent classification. They may be interfering with utility lines, planted in an overcrowded location, or have minor insect, pathogen, or nutritional deficiencies. FAIR - (Declining) trees have some or all of the following problems: large dead limbs with as much as half the tree already dead, large cavities in the trunk, major deformities, girdling roots, obvious insect, pathogen, or nutritional problems. Immediate maintenance and proper care may be able to save the tree. POOR - trees are in a very degraded condition with irreversible problems. They have over 50% dead branches, drastic deformities, and severe insect, pathogen, or nutritional problems. They will have to be removed as soon as possible. DEAD trees have over 90% dead branches and have completely succumbed to insects, pathogens, or nutritional deficiencies. Removal is required. II ANALYSIS The tree inventory will be used in prioritizing maintenance tasks. Overall maintenance requirements will be determined by observing the condition of the trunk, large branches, and canopy of each tree, as well as the tree’s location relative to the course design. These conditions may necessitate pruning to maintain line of sight and avoid poor turf conditions. Tree condition data should be used to develop cost-effective pruning and removal schedules. The following areas contribute to establishing a viable maintenance program: Species diversification Approximate age and life expectancy Removal and pruning requirements A) Species Diversification In general, no genus and species (e.g., Quercus rubra) should account for more that 10% of the total tree population. Further, no single genus (e.g., Quercus) should comprise more than 30% of the total tree population. Having a large concentration of one species could lead to a large number of trees being lost if affected by insect or disease pathogens; an entire species of trees could be at risk. B) Approximate Age and Life Expectancy Tree species have different life expectancies and different diameters, heights, and crown spreads at maturity. It is, therefore, more useful to make general classifications of age such as young, mature, and over mature rather than actual years. The diameter of a tree measured at 4-1/2 feet above the ground is the standard used to classify tree age. YOUNG trees are 6 inches or less in diameter MATURE trees are 6 to 24 inches in diameter OVER MATURE trees are greater than 24 inches in diameter The ideal age distribution of a species in the urban forest, and for the population as a whole, is 20% young, 60% mature, and 20% over mature. A high percentage of over mature trees could necessitate a massive, expensive removal and if required a replanting program. An appropriate age mixture can be achieved by removing and
  • 4. 4 replanting a certain percentage of trees each year. Trees should not be removed based solely on age, but condition rating and species type will be considered. C) Removal and Pruning Requirements Trees lose vigor and die from natural causes such as disease and insect pathogens, weather conditions, and from physical injury due to vehicles, vandalism, poisoning, and root disturbance. Trees can also have a negative impact to turf conditions and playability. Trees provide shade and reduce sunlight for photosynthesis with competing plants. Roots systems are also invasive to nearby plants and structures such as cart path and buildings. When trees are planted to close to each other, they compete for sun, water and nutrients and unhealthy conditions exist. Trees should be removed to  Reduce safety risks to persons or property  Improve turf conditions at putting greens  Improve turf conditions at fairways, tees and other golf course features  Encourage air movement, open vistas and improve playability Tree maintenance requirements can be categorized as follows: HIGH-PRIORITY REMOVAL trees should be removed as soon as possible as their location and/or condition present risks to persons or property. LOW-PRIORITY REMOVAL trees should be scheduled and accomplished when resources are available. IMMEDIATE PRUNING trees present safety risks to persons or property. They may have dangerous broken branches and large deadwood. Pruning should be accomplished as soon as possible, along with a close examination for decay or severe dieback. If these conditions exist, the tree should be removed. HIGH-PRIORITY PRUNING trees should be attended to as soon as scheduling will allow, starting with those presenting the greatest safety risks. They have broken branches and areas of deadwood but do not present an immediate safety hazard to persons or property. They should also be examined closely during trimming operations for signs of decay or severe dieback and removed if necessary. ROUTINE PRUNING requires the removal of dead, dying, diseased, or obviously weak, heavy, or hazardous branches, and deadwood. Routine, ongoing pruning should be scheduled and programmed to ensure all tree pruning is accomplished on a minimum cycle of five to seven years. It is important to remember that low priority problems can become high priority if they are neglected for an extended period of time. Thinning of tree canopies to reduce crossing or unnecessary branches should be accomplished routinely. This reduces the potential for wind-induced branch breakage and increases sunlight and air circulation within the crown. Thinning of tree canopies substantially reduces the incidence of insect and disease related problems. All pruning should be completed based on ANSI A300 standard and approved by the clubs arborist. There should never be any more than 25 % reduction in foliage in any one year. III IMPLEMENTATION A) Mulching Probably the most neglected tree care practice is mulching. Placing 4 inches of organic mulch over the entire root system reduces environmental stress, conserves moisture, minimizes mechanical damage from mowers and weed eaters, and reduces nutrient competition from weeds and turf. Although any organic matter can be used as mulch, shredded leaves, pine straw, peat moss, and shredded or composted tree bark and chips are the most widely accepted amendments. Care must be taken to ensure that a 4 inch wide ring around the tree trunk is maintained clear of mulch to guard against decay and other problems associated with excessive moisture. B) Monitoring Monitoring insect and disease infestations by regular inspections and responsive treatment will help to maintain the health and vitality of the trees. A certified arborist can take steps to prevent or reduce the severity of future disease, insect, and other pathogenic problems through periodic inspections (at least once a year). By closely
  • 5. 5 observing new leaves or buds, leaf size, twig growth, and crown dieback, a treatment can be recommended to prevent major problems from affecting the tree population. Signs of poor tree health include trunk decay, loose bark, and deformed growths. C) Planting Tree planting is one of the most important aspects of the tree management plan. Trees should be planted according to this management guide. Plantings should benefit the property in regards to playability, aesthetics and maintenance. Proper best management practices should be applied when planting. Adjacent Property Owners Property owners adjacent to the golf course are prohibited to plant a tree on Pinehurst property. All plantings must be approved by the Director of Grounds and/or General Manager. Plantings should benefit the country club property. Annual Tree Management Action Plan Each year an action plan will be prepared by the Director of Grounds and the grounds staff for the Green Committee. The Action Plan will outline annual tree plantings, pruning and removal for the property for the upcoming winter.
