Key statement from the discussion paper: “ Long-term and standardised observations of our environment are perhaps the most important contribution research infra-structure can make to support our understanding of how our environment is changing.  This was a priority in the 2006  and 2008 Roadmaps and remains the top priority.”  (DIISR, 2011: 13)

This shows our Environments - Can we also show on this (and all) bases: shallow inshore areas (done) , more vegetation on hills (done) How do we show the NETWORKS (people and data/information systems)? (done) Order of Boxes: Soils, Coasts, Auscover, Ozflux, Multi-Scale Plot Network (replaces ARSN) (done) Overlays: Person icon in each environment link to computer icons in sky area – link to box for TERN portal – call it TERN Portal Inshore coastal areas: bathymetry -- slope less steep, add in some seagrass Ecoinformatics / Scaling modelling – just add buttons for now – SP to think about how to represent those

Need to discuss how to modify to: have symbol boxes at top with key variables measured, and ground calibration/validation sites as squares linked to these (<< I need to revisit this to make it clear that there are calibration/validation sites on the ground - DT) Objective : A nationally consistent approach to delivery and calibration of past, current and future satellite image based datasets, and the production of ecosystem science data products designed for Australian conditions.
  4. Need to discuss how to modify to: have symbol boxes at top with key variables measured , and each tower linked . Can base of tower be bright yellow so they stand out? Objective : Australian Flux Network will build on an existing network of nine CO 2 flux and micro- meteorological observation sites to expand their coverage to all key biomes in Australia and to provide internationally consistent observations serving the land-surface and ecosystem modelling communities.
  5. Objective : This Network will initially be established in rangeland environments by adding 1800 reference sites to establish a baseline condition for assessment of ecosystem changes. This will build on the existing Australian collaborative rangelands information system (ACRIS) and AusLTER.
  6. Parameters : Meteorology and fluxes (hourly averages) Vegetation (daily to annual) Faunal monitoring (daily to annual) Soils and Hydrology (hourly to decadal) Landscape Water (hourly to annual)

Need to discuss how to modify to: have symbol boxes at top with key coastal variables measured People working in coastal environments – bathymetry (done) – coastline and shoreline Coastcams – nearshore water quality remote sensing – turtle database Ocean surface – split into three sections – one of these a contour map showing bathymetry (done) – one of these a spatial water quality/ocean colour map – turtle database: multiple turtles under the surface + turtles on beach (done)

Add in two more super-sites (one in behind estuary with sandbar and house – urban coastal environment – one in grassland area on far right) Need to discuss how to modify to: have symbol boxes at top with key super-site variables measured Objectives : The concept of a super-site, links specific site based on observations at specific sites (flux, vegetation AusPlots etc) with transects and regional surveys to provide the scaling from point to region. This investment has been enabled by Queensland State co-investment to commence establishment of exemplars of super-sites in the Peri Urban Node in SE Queensland and the Rainforest Biodiversity Node in northern Queensland
