Every barangay or community in the philippines
looks forward to the celebration of their town’s
fiesta.some fiestas have become so popular that
they have become tourist attraction.
What is fiesta?
fiesta means ‘party’ or ‘feast’ in
spanish. it is a traditional
celebration passed on from
generation . fiestas are
celebrated annually to give
thanks for a good harvest or to
honor a patron saint.
fiestaval can be characterized into two types first are the
religious festivals, which are celebrations in honor of
christian figures and events.
The second types of festivals are nonreligious festival ,
which have non-christian origins or petition for a bountiful
harvest.
Religious festivals
The pahiyas festivals is celebrated in lucban,
Quezon city 15th of May. it is held in honor of the
patron saint of farmers , san isidro de labrador .
The term of pahiyas means ‘decorated’. it is aptly
named for the annual fiesta that transforms the
houses of lucban into a garden decked with
harvested produce and colorful rice waters called
Kipings , hanging from the windows like
chandeliers.
Pahiyas
The feast of obando is held in honor of Sta. Clara
san pascual de baylon and La vingen del salambao.
it is celebrated for three consecutive days, one for
each patron saint. people sing and dance in the
streets in this yearly event held in may.many
tourists and devotees go to obando ,bulacan to join
the festivities in hopes of being blessed with a child.
it is said this festival has evolved from a pagan
fertility ritual called the kasilonawon.

The moriones festival is
celebrated in Marinduque
during the holy week. similar to
the masskara festival it is
celebrated with the use of
maks as well. the Moriones is
derived from the term ‘mask’ or
‘visor’
Ati-atihan
The origin of the ati-atihan festival is a story of
thanksgiving. According to Gabriel Casal O.S.B ,, The
aetas experienced a famine so they went down to the
lowlands. and the lowlanders or the malays gave them
foods. As a sign of apppreciation. the aetes would sing
and dance. the malays joined in andb covered their
faces with soot to be like the aetes ,which is where the
term ‘Ati-atihan came from, the spaniards converted the
celebration in honor of the santo nino and has become
an annual tradition in kalibo, aklan this festivals is
celebrated every january.
What is Sinulog festival celebrated for?
The Sinulog Festival is a traditional celebration in Cebu City held
every third Sunday of January to honor the Santo Niño (Child
Jesus). Basically, the festival is done by a dance ritual, in which it
tells the story of the Filipino people's pagan past and their
acceptance of Christianity.

means ‘current’ seing how the
devotees dance to the beat of
the drums gives an
impressions of the current of
the river.
Dinagyang
The dinagyang festival, formerly known as the ‘‘iloilo ati-atihan’’
started 1967 when a replica of the santo nino was brought to ilolilo.
as a sign of respect and gratitude . the people of iloilo welcomed the
image with song and dance . since then it became an annual event
celebrated on the fourth week of january where the participants
blanken their face with makeup and wear elaborate costumes.
Santacruzan
The santacruzan festival is the
highlight of May in many parts of the
country .it reenacts the search of
Queen helena for the cross where
christ was cricified . it is also a
thanksgiving when it was recovered.
The flores de mayo is held in
honor of the dogma of the
immaculate conception of the
virgin mary. it was started 1867 in
bulacan by father mariano sevilla.
The santacruzan is held at the
end of flores de mayo in this
celebrates, the most beautiful
girls of the town are dressed up
in their colorful gowns and are
paraded around town.

Panagbenga
The panagbenga festival , also known as the flower festival is a
month-long festival in baguio city, the summer capital of the
philippines,held every february, the term panagbenga came from a
local dialect , which means ‘’a season of blossoming’’ this was
first celebrated as a symbolic rising from the devastation caused by
the 1990 earthquake. it became an avenue for the people of the
community to showcase their rich cultural diversity through dance
and artistic floats
it is known for its beautiful floats made with the
thousands of different and colorful flowers.
Masskara
The Masskara festival in bacolod city ,negros is held every fourth
sunday of october.
It was concieved in the 1980s as a way for the people of negros to
escape the problems
Two words mass meaning ‘’crowd’’ and kara meaning ‘’ face ‘’
Its most distinctive feature are the colorful smiling masks which are
decorated with beads and glitters. these masks are a symbol of the
negrense’s hopeful attitude despite hardship and a testament of the
town’s positive attitude.
It is also likened to the Mardi gras, a festival in the United state . the
Masskara festival has been attracting tourist that served to promote the
city’s tourism. crafts, and cultural
Kaamulan
The kaamulan festival of malaybalay city,bukidnon
Is celebrated from the second half of february to march
10.
It is participated by the different ethnic groups namely the
bukidnon,higaonon,talaandig, manobo
matigsalug .tagwahanon and umayamnon wherein they
present their cultural traditions through a song,dance and
the like.
The word kaamulan comes from amul , a bukidnon word that
means ‘’a get-together for a purpose’’
• In the participants wear their traditional customes, exhibit their
products, and share their tradition which gives a venue for a
diverse yet united province.
Kadayawan
The kadayawan festival is one the grandest and most
awaited festival in Davao.
from the thanksgiving ritual called the pahinugod of
the ethnic tribes of davao a good harvest.
The word kadayawan comes from the Mandaya word
madayaw meani ‘’good ,noble,valuable’’.
This yearly event is held on the
third week of august.
