PREPARED BY: MARK ANGELO C. NEPOMUCENO
What we call traditional arts are those art
forms that were developed by our ancestors
before the colonization of our country and are
still being created today.
For this quarter, you will learn to identify
artifacts, their functions and meanings and how
they are made.
Traditional Filipino
Artforms Characteristics
Functional
•The art piece serves a practical purpose in
their lives of early Filipinos, from the activities
of each individual to the shared practices of
the community. The objects help people in
everyday living.
Craft Oriented
•Our ancestors have a high regard for craft.
The objects found in the different regions of
the country show the crafts persons
demonstrated mastery in the use of
materials.
Stylized
•We can identify sophisticated design in
traditional artifacts. The crafts-people are not
only concerned with making objects that are
functional. They are also skilled in the design
aspect of the objects they make. Common
designs pay tribute to their immediate
environment and show their respect for
nature, using organic forms.
Spiritual
•The artifacts made by our ancestors are also
evidence of their spirituality. The celebration
of nature, as well as the performance of
rituals accompanying the creation and use of
the objects, suggest that traditions are
connected to their spiritual beliefs.
Community Based
•The art of our ancestors involve certain
processes of members of the community,
whether the craftspeople create the objects
guided by rituals, or guided for the use of a
member of the community, the artists
considers the impact of the artifact to
everyone around him.
