The Philippines is an archipelago located in Southeast Asia between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. It has a population of over 99 million people and its capital and largest city is Manila. The Philippines was a Spanish colony during the 16th century and was later ceded to the US in 1898, gaining full independence in 1946. It has a diverse culture with influences from Malayo-Polynesian origins as well as Hispanic, Chinese, American and other Asian cultures. Popular sports include basketball, boxing, and volleyball. Famous tourist destinations include Boracay Beach, Mount Mayon, and Vigan.
