The Philippine islands are an
archipelago of over 7,000
islands lying about 500 mi (805
km) off the southeast coast of
Asia.
The overall land area is
comparable to that of Arizona.
Only about 7% of the islands are
larger than one square mile, and
only one-third have names.
The largest are Luzon in the
north (40,420 sq mi; 104,687 sq
km),
Mindanao in the south (36,537
sq mi; 94,631 sq km),
and Visayas (23,582 sq mi;
61,077 sq km).
These are divided into 17
regions, 81
Geographical Condition
PHILIPPINES
Most of the mountainous islands are covered in tropical rainforest and volcanic in
origin. The highest mountain is Mount Apo. It measures up to 2,954 meters
(9,692 feet) above sea level and is located on the island of Mindanao. The
longest river is the Cagayan River in northern Luzon. Manila Bay, upon the shore
of which the capital city of Manila lies, is connected to Laguna de Bay, the largest
lake in the Philippines.

Climatic Condition
PHILIPPINES
The Philippines has a tropical maritime climate and
is usually hot and humid. There are three seasons:
tag-init or tag-araw, the hot dry season or summer
from March to May; tag-ulan, the rainy season from
June to November; and tag-lamig, the cool dry
season from December to February. The southwest
monsoon (from May to October) is known as the
Habagat, and the dry winds of the northeast
monsoon (from November to April), the Amihan.
Temperatures usually range from 21C (70F) to 32C
(90F) although it can get cooler or hotter depending
on the season. The coolest month is January; the
warmest is May.
Early Settlement
PRE HISPANIC COLONIZATION
The earliest inhabitants of the
Philippines lived some 40000 years
ago. Stone tools from ancient times
were found in Palawan. The age of the
tools is estimated to be about 30.000
years old.
The original people of the Philippines
were ancestors of the people known
today as Negritos or Aeta. They are
very small people with a dark skin and
curly brown hair.
In the tenth century Muslim
traders come from Kalimantan
(Indonesia) to the Philippines.
A few centuries later, the
Islam spread out in the southern
part of the Philippines. Until now,
the Islam is strong rooted on
Mindanao and the other (smaller)
islands of the southern part of the
Philippines.
Philippine History
HISPANIC-AMERICAN PERIOD
In 1521 the Spanish period started with the arrival of a small fleet in the
coastal waters of Mactan island, just east of Cebu island. It was Fernando de
Magellaes (Ferdinand Magellan), a Portuguese in service of the Spanish
King. He claimed the country for the Spanish King.
After the Spaniards succeeded in 1556 to break the last good organized
resistance, a long period of Spanish influence followed. The Spaniards ruled
the country and brought the Christian religion.
At the end of the nineteenth century, on April 25,1898, the United States
declared war on Spain. The battle took place in Manila Bay. On May 1 in 1898
the Spanish fleet was destroyed.
After the end of the American-Spanish war in 1898,
the Spaniards sold the Philippines and other colonial properties for 20 million
dollar to the Americans.
The Americans decided that the Filipinos were not yet capable to be
independent. A hostile period started. The United States needed more than
125.000 soldiers to subdue the Philippines. The Philippine rebels were forced to
retreat and were driven into northern Luzon. From here they started a guerrilla.
This "Philippine War of Independence" continued for two years and ended
when Aguinaldo was captured on March 23, 1901.
Only sporadic resistance continued until 1903.
Philippine History
AMERICAN AND PRE-WWII PERIOD
The Philippines was controlled by the
Americans from 1900-1942. In 1934 an
act was established, which made it
possible that the Philippines could have a
"Commonwealth of the Philippines". The
first president of this Commonwealth was
Manuel Quezon. The first president was
given certain power for some internal
affairs.
The Japanese army and rulers occupied
the Philippines from 1942 - 1944
Four(4) Governal-General Lead the
Philippine Governmnt: Gen. Masaharu
Homma, Gen. Shizuichi Tanaka, Gen.
Shigenori Kuroda and Gen. Tomoyuki
Yamashita.
The war in Philippine island ended in
December 1944 .
After 148 years when the Philippine
anthem called "Lupang Hinirang“ was
written, the Philippines was granted its
independence on July 4, 1946.

Language
PHILIPPINES
There are 175 individual languages in the
Philippines, 171 of which are living languages,
while 4 no longer have any known speakers.
According to the 1987 Philippine Constitution,
Filipino and English are the official languages.
Filipino is a standardized version of Tagalog,
spoken mainly in Metro Manila and other urban
regions. Both Filipino and English are used in
government, education, print, broadcast media,
and business. The constitution mandates that
Spanish and Arabic shall be promoted on a
voluntary and optional basis.[9]
Tradition and Customs
PHILIPPINES
Mano Po
When children or young people greet or say goodbye to
their elders they typically do so by taking the right hand
of the elder with their right hand and touch the back the
elder's hand lightly on their forehead. This act is called
Mano Po. It is a way to give respect to elders and I've
also understood it to be a way of accepting a blessing
from the elder. Mano is spanish for 'hand' while the word
Po is often used at the end of a sentence when
addressing elders or superiors.
Po
The word Po is often used when speaking with
an elder or to a superior. Typically, it is added to
the end of a sentence. For example, thank you
would be thank you po. In tagalog, salamat
means thank you. To an elder you would say
salamat po. The word po doesn't really have a
meaning but adds formality as a sign of respect.

PHILIPPINES
Philippine cuisine has evolved over several centuries
from its Malayo-Polynesian origins to become a
mixed cuisine with many Hispanic, Chinese,
American, and other Asian influences that have been
adapted to local ingredients and the Filipino palate to
create distinctively Filipino dishes.
Dishes range from the very simple, like a meal of
fried salted fish and rice, to the elaborate, such as the
paellas and cocidos created for fiestas. Popular
dishes include lechón, adobo, sinigang, kare-kare,
tapa, crispy pata, pancit, lumpia, and halo-halo.
Some common local ingredients used in cooking are
calamondins, coconuts, saba (a kind of short wide
plantain), mangoes, milkfish, and fish sauce.
Filipino taste buds tend to favor robust flavors but the
cuisine is not as spicy as those of its neighbors.

Tradition and Customs PHILIPPINES Mano Po When children or young people greet or say goodbye to their elders they typically do so by taking the right hand of the elder with their right hand and touch the back the elder's hand lightly on their forehead. This act is called Mano Po. It is a way to give respect to elders and I've also understood it to be a way of accepting a blessing from the elder. Mano is spanish for 'hand' while the word Po is often used at the end of a sentence when addressing elders or superiors. Po The word Po is often used when speaking with an elder or to a superior. Typically, it is added to the end of a sentence. For example, thank you would be thank you po. In tagalog, salamat means thank you. To an elder you would say salamat po. The word po doesn't really have a meaning but adds formality as a sign of respect.
