2. 1, Generality
Phil Knight was born on February 24, 1938. He
attended the University of Oregon and graduated
in 1959 with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
After 1 year serving in the army, he returned to
further studies and earned an MBA at Stanford
Business School.
3. Phil came up with the idea of opening a shoe
company because he realized that Americans
needed better sports shoes. After witnessing
firsthand the unmatched quality and durability of
the shoes used by Japanese soldiers during
World War II, Phil Knight envisioned a visit to
the Land of the Rising Sun to research about
shoes.
The path to success starts with a "crazy idea" and a trip
around the world
4. To realize the idea, after graduating, in November
1962, Phil went around the world to find suitable
running shoes and stopped in Japan and Meeting
with Onitsuka's staff, Phil introduced himself as the
director of the shoe company, he even "drawed" the
company name blue ribbons and offered to become
Onitsuka's representative in the US.
The rising journey of “blue ribbon"
5. Surprisingly, this proposal was accepted despite the
fact that Phil had nothing in hand and Onitsuka had
little interest in the international market. Phil returned
home with 40 pairs of Tiger shoes stacked in the back
of the car. Phil Knight sought out a teacher who had
coached him on the track when he was a student to
suggest cooperation, which was Bowerman - a guy
who was very knowledgeable about running shoes
because of those shoes’ the quality was so good.
6. In 1971, the Blue Ribbon company decided to
stop selling Onitsuka's shoes and began
producing its own shoes for violating the
exclusive distribution contract. However, the
name Blue Ribbon no longer fit the company's
vision and mission, so Phil needed an
alternative name: “Nike”
7. 2, Nike’s journey
Phil Knight organized recruitment of manufacturers across Japan
to supply designer shoes for Nike with the support of nissho
company. From here, Nike's journey has been almost
exclusively growth. They became the largest athletic shoe
company in America in 1989 and even spread globally thanks to
clever marketing and an outsourcing model to take advantage of
cheap labor.
Nike's first shoe model, designed by Bowerman, arose from the
idea of making waffles for breakfast. The shape of the cake
helped Bowerman come up with the idea of grooved shoe soles,
helping athletes' shoes grip tighter and have better friction on
the running track. This idea gave birth to the “Nike Waffle
Trainer”.
8. Next, one of Nike's biggest successes was signing an
advertising contract with Michael Jordan - a legendary
basketball player and launching the Air Jordan model,
considered Nike's first shoe line with Nike features. Air
with airbags in the heel, adding cushioning to support
basketball players.
The Air Jordan product line has become one of the
most successful partnerships of all time in the sneaker
industry. In March 1985, Air Jordans appeared on
shoe shelves at Nike stores across the United States
for $65 a pair. 70 million USD was the revenue of this
product line after only 2 months of launch, contributing
a significant part to Nike's total revenue of more than
100 million USD at the end of that year
9. 3, My feelings
After reading this book, I was completely absorbed
in it. The book is very interesting and useful. Phil
Knight has endured hardship for a long time so
when I read this book, I thought his life was difficult
but sometimes I also felt the humor in it.
