What Women Want: Understanding Women’s Philanthropic ObjectivesKatherine Swank
Women, as a group, are increasingly impacting fundraising efforts in the U.S.; however, their philanthropic objectives can differ significantly from men’s. Women tend to focus on specific sectors and want greater accountability for their gifts. On the whole, women want to create new solutions, seek more contact and control, and want to be kept informed of the results from their giving. Many also seek social networks within the organizations that interest them. If women are among your majority donors, you may need to change the way you speak with them and start listening for their direction.

They include lessons learned from fundraising, stewardship, and list-building campaigns.
Cunningham History of Western Philanthropy occasional paper Nov 13Giving Centre
Professor Hugh Cunningham‘s important new addition to CGAPs series of occasional papers offers discussion and reflection on the strata or layers of philanthropic action, which have accumulated on top of each other within Western philanthropy. Emphasising that philanthropy history is not simply a history of giving, nor a history of giving by the rich, the paper suggests nine successive strata , which, cumulatively, shape the present. Taken together, they draw attention to the ways in which philanthropy is as much circular and repetitive as progressive and linear; that is, that “earlier strata keep re-surfacing.”
Academy of Philanthropy workshop on “Women in Philanthropy: Why Women” in Septemmber 2013. Professor Jenny Harrow presented an overview of the landscapes of women-led philanthropy, contrasting the theme of women’s empathy and understanding (“getting the philanthropy idea more quickly and with more effect”) with the theme of women’s power and the case for “here come the girls!”.

Would you like to be more fluent with your clients in conversations about
philanthropy? Would you like to add richness and depth to this meaningful
area of clients’ lives? Are you looking for a way to support your clients in
developing an effective and rewarding Philanthropy Roadmap?
DESCRIPTION:
In this two-day workshop, Deborah provides an opportunity to address
these needs. She believes that everyone can be a philanthropist and is
passionate about helping people give in a way that is most meaningful
for them. To achieve this, she guides women through an exploration of
their values and areas of interest to help participants determine their
vision for giving. Working through a series of activities and discussions,
participants will eventually create their own Philanthropy Roadmap,
enabling them to clearly articulate and act upon their philanthropic
desires. She’ll also talk about how to instill giving values in their kids or
grandkids. Participants will receive tools they can use with their families
to facilitate these conversations.
Prior to the weekend, Deborah will offer you and/or your firm a 1.5 hour
session so you can have a glimpse of what your clients will experience
throughout the weekend. Following the weekend, Deborah recommends
meeting together with you and your participating clients one-on-
one to bring you into the philanthropic conversation and create an
implementation plan.
