  1. Phase III Thinking on this is still being developed and plans will be finalised in June. At this stage, we envisage two main follow up areas of work: In-depth survey of groups and members for selected cases to determine which are delivering income, assets and empowerment benefits to (which) women. This will be a rigorous research methodology which could be replicated at a larger scale by others (e.g. by integrating methods into large scale agricultural surveys). Case studies which will investigate and document innovations or strategies promoting greater benefits to women from their collective action in agricultural markets. These innovations may relate to, for example, collective actions which: Enable women to engage in new markets, or in new roles in existing markets, moving women ‘up the value chain’ Promote greater participation and leadership of women, or specific groups of women in organization of smallholders in agricultural markets Enable smallholder women to access new agricultural technologies or services Strengthens women’s asset base and control over assets The success factors behind such innovations, whether driven by NGO, market actor, government agencies, or women themselves will also be identified. Vs male members of same associations; vs. women in comparison communities.

We would like your insights on where it might be most helpful to focus future research efforts. Three key questions we have: Where do you think we should focus our survey efforts and why? (in this region/ in these subsectors?) What examples of (innovations in) women’s collective action or strategies to support these are you aware of that have promoted significant benefits to women from agricultural markets? OR What experiences or examples you are aware of collective action which has: Enabled women to participate in new roles or markets, or access new technologies and services ? Enabled women to join organisations in greater numbers and have more influence? Overall, what most interests you about this research which you would like to see followed up in the next phase?
